Roll Idris Elba's Black Superman character into the main franchise, where he reveals he is in fact Stacker Pentecost, here from the future to prevent the kaiju menace before it begins, but only the F&F gang can help because they've mastered the power of... drift compatibility.

I'm sad Hobbs & Shaw sucked and Idris probably won't be rolled into the mainline franchise via Mr. Nobody because I'd love to hear him say "family schmamily"

I’m going through this series for the first time and they’re so hyper masculine, base and idiotic that’s they’re almost socially irresponsible. Just an assault on good taste and basic common sense at every turn.

But I think I kinda love them? The only one that sucks (so far) is the second one, bruh.

I'd say bring in Hattie Shaw to replace Brian. She'd be able to fill that role almost perfectly but her dry sarcasm would be enough to differentiate her from him.

One of the biggest missed opportunities ever must have been in the F9 trailers where someone asks about Cena "Who is he?" and the answer isn't "He's family", but instead it's "He'S dOM's bRoThEr"

Watching 2F2F when you were first introduced to the series with the later movies must be a bit weird because Roman hadn't been Flanderized yet into slapstick and the butt of everyone's jokes. He and Brian made for a good team.

I watched 2F2F for the first time last week and it holds up surprisingly well. Paul Walker turns in a MUCH better performance in that than he did in the first movie, and all of the things people ragged on it for at the time -- the cartoonish physics, the absurd gadgets, the largely non-actor cast -- turned out to be weirdly prophetic in retrospect.

It really was; the first F&F movie I ever watched was the fourth one and the next one was the sixth film. Then I actually saw the next two films then decided during quarantine to go back and watch 1-8 in order.

2F2F is a drat trip for your reasons because I kept thinking "that's Roman?" many times.

Yeah I rewatched it not too long ago and that stuff didn't even faze me since I'm now used to the later films.

Although there is one moment, I think during the relay race, where it looks like Brian engages a hyperdrive :roflolmao:

Roman was a legit co-star in 2F2F, just as important as Dom was in the original.

However 2F2F despite it's many important contributions to the series as a whole is legit low effort and ugly, and with the pedestrian direction, out of all of them it's the closest to looking like a straight up TV movie or low budget direct to video shlock, even at twice the budget of the first.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJgRHSwhBTc

Especially notable since Tokyo Drift came after it and looked far better on nearly the same budget. It even steals the climax from Jackie Chan First Strike, which does it better.

Also the rat torture scene is just mean spirited in a way that nothing else in the franchise is.

It's easy to memory hole 8, but there are at least 2 scenes meaner than that (which is at least fitting for a villain and gives you rat cam, name me another film with enough balls for a rat cam).

1) Offing Dom's baby mom in front of him for no reason except Dom didn't do it her way.

2) Dom making out with Cypher in front of Letty TO SHOW HES BAD.

8 is so loving awful and mean and stupid. The rat torture might as well be light comedy compared to that stuff. Guy gets out with a few scratches.

I took the movie for what it was presenting itself as, a tacky WWE storyline.

At this point I can't wait for Charlize to get into a fist-fight with Vin Diesel to decide who will get the next infinity stone and decide the final fate of the furious.

I was so high when I watched F8 I thought the movie was over at the end of the Havana race, and that it’d been incredible. When I got the title screen instead of the closing credits I obviously decided to keep watching, but I don’t have a single memory of the rest of the movie.

I was thinking about doing a rewatch before seeing F9, but after hearing how disappointing F8 was as a whole I kind of just want to file my experience as headcanon.

Mandrel

come to think of it yeah, F8 is pretty mean spirited in a way the others aren’t. i always think of Dom killing the Game of Thrones guy the way he did (snapping his neck over the fender of the car) and letty putting that guy into the sub props, both were extremely cool but felt kind of tonally out of step with the level of almost cartoonish violence the series generally operates in.

that one Black Hawk Down scene in 5 was like that too at first, but it doubles back around into being the setup for a tonally perfect gag when Dom enters frame in a t shirt just blasting guys with that same shotgun he always had and Vince is hip firing SMGs, then it culminates in the Predator style slow mo muscle arm grab, leading into Hobbes effectively leaving whatever sane tacticool Call of Duty universe he was living in and fully entering into Dom’s cartoon world and the different internal logic it operates with

Lobok

F8's main hook actually sounds like a perfect thing on paper for being the first movie after Paul Walker. Like Brian isn't there and what happens without him? The team immediately implodes and has to fight against Dom. But in the execution I really feel Brian's absence because it just seems way too focused on Dom and also getting into Mary Sue territory. Like is he so much better and clever than all the rest of them combined now?

Reminds me of Doc Savage, who has a whole crew of specialists but ultimately are superfluous to Doc and are there more for flavour.

(F8 also seemed funnier as a concept for the meta reason that it was in the zeitgeist for the heroes to fight each other. Civil War and Bats vs. Supes and F8 were all out within a year of each other.)
