ever since that GIF i made a few days ago, i started working on a web app that could animate historical data from CovidActNow's dataset it's really barebones right now, just a map and a date, but i can animate basically any field on this documentation page here's a recording of cases per 100k (7 day average). placeholder colors, but red = 100 cases / 100k https://i.imgur.com/hNYIUaU.mp4 not sure what's up with nebraska

alright, but. im sorry cspam, i have to realpost for a minute here I'm actually super loving worried about the next 6-8 weeks. like. it is now virtually guaranteed that millions of children are going to be infected with covid-19 — probably north of 75% of the entire school-age population, especially the elementary demographic — and the sheer overload of the health system this will cause is going to kill tens of thousands of children in the space of a month or two. I am deadass actually expecting that we are going to be facing down a hundred thousand dead children by some point in October. and I have no loving idea what happens after that. what happens after the biggest child mortality crisis in this country in more than a century, and this one self-manufactured. like, the leadership and certain parts of the bourgeoisie are going to try to not give a poo poo beyond platitudes, and at least at first I expect a Sandy Hook-esque shrug, but by the time the death wave really sets in, even at only like 50,000 dead that's going to be six digits worth of parents who are just. just totally and completely out of their minds with grief and rage. and power will try and do nothing, and. they're going to want to express their anger. i'm not predicting ~~civil war~~ because i don't expect it to be a war; war implies some level of organization. i just keep imagining this white-hot ball of rage erupting all across the country, and. it'll just be people doing poo poo because gently caress it, our children are dead, our world has already ended, and so far nobody has given a gently caress. well we'll make you give a gently caress. like. tell me the molochian virus furnace we're about to shovel 60 million children into isn't going to result in massive child death, cspam. tell me the next few months I see ahead of us is just me doom-braining.

Leon Trotsky 2012 posted:$300k in student loan debt is a lot less of a big deal when the average salary for a doctor in the U.S. is 232k to 511k depending on specialty. I'm way behind here, but I just want to stop and say that the risks behind 300k in student loan debt absolutely keep a ton of would be doctors out of the profession. Probably forces a bunch of crappy doctors to stay in the field too, because there's no way in hell you're going to pay off that kind of debt working at Starbucks.

SpaceDrake posted:alright, but. im sorry cspam, i have to realpost for a minute here It's okay to hope that it's not but be aware that there is a really good chance that children will get seriously sick and some will die. I can't even guess what numbers will be when places like Disney World are removing mask requirements at non-indoor areas and aren't bothering to force them in indoor areas except like theaters. There were a couple of posters on one of the big Disney forums saying that their school is already in quarantine so they're taking the kids to Disney even though they've already been exposed because the parents don't think it's a threat and their kids are 7 and 10, so it's not like it's that serious for them anyway, right? The people were banned and the posts deleted, but if there's already posters doing that and saying it in a public space, there's more doing it behind the scenes. Theme parks, concerts, parties, etc: it's all wide open and not all of them have mask mandates, especially on more local level stuff. They sure don't in GA, where I am. I'm off funerals for another couple of months (I -didn't- pass my psych test this time, first time ever, largely because I had a dog die in June and one in July and both were long-time buddies and it's been poo poo) but I fully expect to be burying polarities of ages when I return to it: the young and the elderly. I'd say prep yourself for the worst and hope for the best.

SpaceDrake posted:alright, but. im sorry cspam, i have to realpost for a minute here It won't matter if tens of thousands of children die because those deaths are going to be diffused throughout the whole uncaring, idiotic, selfish mass that is the American population. Most parents aren't going to have a seriously sick kid, and neither will the people they care about. At best, the average person will know 2nd or 3rd hand about some other kid that died, and they will rationalize it the same way they rationalize anything else that happens to someone who isn't them. Sandy Hook is actually a good example because, while the total number of deaths there was significantly lower than what we may see with covid, those deaths were all concentrated in a single community. Multiple kids in a single school were murdered, from families who probably knew each other. And even then, nothing happened.

taking a more optimistic look, I doubt we'll see tens of thousands of dead kids in the next 4 to 8 weeks. yeah schools are opening but despite Florida literally on fire, child mortality is still pretty drat low for an out of control pandemic. I'm more worried about kids getting sick and having it affect them for life (my youngest struggled with seasonal allergies and when smoke's in the air) and the kids bringing it home to vulnerable family members. seeing 100,000+ child deaths in the next month or two doesn't seem plausible.
