JROTC is sad, we made fun of them in marching band. How can you have trouble marching in a block, it’s like the easiest thing in the world!

JROTC is one of those weird things where even though I grew up in a mix of the conservative south and the conservative midwest, the latter of which had a "Wall of Heroes" bulletin board dedicated to all the high school graduates who were military, police, or firefighters, I had never heard of JROTC until I was in ROTC. I thought people were talking about JRTC. When I finally had to go assist with a JROTC event as an LT, I was just kind of amazed, because you get nothing out of it, but it looks like it sucks, and you look like dorks.

I had never heard of Sea Cadets until I got to my first squadron and was told that we sponsored a unit. It's like military Boy Scouts and there's something about it that I find really unsettling and creepy. I know kids like to play soldier and GI Joes are a staple of many a childhood, but something organized and endorsed to that degree gives off some really unpleasant indoctrination vibes. I mean, I'm just a nerd that rides in an airplane and the furthest thing from a steely eyed killer, but the military is fundamentally about doing some really unpleasant things to other people and it weirded me out to see a bunch of middle schoolers excitedly and uncritically glorifying that. But I never had any exposure to JROTC or ROTC growing up, and other people were like "oh yeah, Sea Cadets, it's a thing" very nonchalantly.

I think my high school may have had a recruiter come set up a table once or twice, and my college shut down the ROTC program during Vietnam and never looked back.

Do they “help” with education and rescues like civil air patrol? A coast guard auxiliary that’s basically dedicated to boating safety stuff seems very reasonable.

Yes. 100%.

Sea Cadets is a para military training group for a straight pipeline into undesignated seamen. It's literally just marching around and that's about it. Sea Scouts is much more safety at sea oriented and is more likely to steer people to merchant marine or coast guard. Sea Scouts sometimes take Sea Cadets with them on long cruises to show them how a small ship is run but Sea Cadets never have their own ships. I grew up in Sea Scouts and we took their ding-dongs with us from time to time and it was always a pain.

lol hell no all they do is try to teach them to march. even that the sea scouts did better because it was for fun during a competition and not the only thing we did.

This was my ship over 20 years ago still going strong. We cruised it up and down from SF to San Diego with 3 adults and 11 kids.

My reserve unit location hosted sea cadets and the dudes in charge of them were always thrilled and flattered when a confused junior enlisted marine saluted the scout master guys (they had pseudo Navy uniforms with lots of shiny stuff on their collars). Hated them. And yeah what level of military brain do you need to be on to be happy that your tiny kids are dressing up in take military uniforms and hanging out at a military installation on weekends.

Oh you better believe it. Backed up by a prevailing culture that considers them beyond reproach or censure and borderline sacred (so long as they're the right kind of troop) and you've got a recipe for legacy enlistments

It's loving awesome. Giving kids ownership on a big vessel and the pride of being part of a team moving a big ship safely was tons of fun. Also our big competitions had upwards of 500 kids partaking from all the surrounding states. I actually met my wife in the program too. 100% than boy scouts at the time because I hate sleeping on the ground and it was coed (of course normal scouts is now too but this wasnt the case 30 years ago). Most of my best teen memories are related to Sea Scouts as opposed to High School.

The sea cadets had some poo poo one weekend at Corry Station in Pensacola. I woke my dumb boot rear end up on Saturday to go get some biscuits and gravy at like 7am and it's making GBS threads rain. Open the barracks room door and there are a bunch of like 10 year olds doing push-ups in the wet rainy sand.

I chuckled pretty good because the navy never asks me to do wet rainy push-ups. Sea cadets extra dumb

idk about the other US mil branches, but the Air Force provides (or used to provide?) accelerated rank to JROTC people who had reached certain milestones in high school. E-2 out of basic training, if memory servers. One of the dudes I went through basic and tech school with really lorded it over us because he put on Amn a couple months before the rest of us, while we were still slick sleeves.

He got real real mad when he realized that all of us non-JROTC plebs would still test for E-5 at the exact same time he did. Even angrier when a bunch of us made rank on the first try and he didn't.

If I cared more, I'd look him up to see if he's still in. Def the kind of person who would build his life around being a petty tyrant and messing with the junior Airmen.

The only thing I thank my lovely civilian recruiter for (2002 was weird, man) was ensure that we got all the boxes ticked to go to basic as an E3 and knocking 10 months off of my 8 year obligation with DEP. If I recall correctly, it was doing pre-basic meetups and PT, and "referring" aka having a guy I knew who was already going to enlist say I told him he should. Pretty sure they chained like 6 of us so we all got that dosh.

Jokes on us, E4 was(?) based on time in service so we got promoted with everyone else lol

There was something like that with the army jrotc i went through. I thought it was if you went jrotc rotc then joined you recieved a step up on the people who only did rotc but i was in like 8th grade when they mentioned that and could be 100% wrong.

Or they could have been changeling their inner recruiter. We only had 1 retired ltc the other 4 were all retired first sargeants

I'm fairly sure that sea scout "quartermasters" (same as eagle) got push button E3 at the end of Coast Guard boot camp. Possibly navy it's been a long time since that was remotely relevant to me.

It's an E-3 advancement for Quartermaster or an E-2 for the Able rank (Life scout equivalent).

This and same. I was part of a really well run troop where the scouts did all the leadership and made all the decisions and the adults.. just were in the background somewhere running the money and ensuring we didn’t kill ourselves or light ourselves on fire. I got my eagle at 17 and a few palms just before I turned 18 and I am forever greatful I had all those adventures. Philmont was pretty life changing for me. I was a very short overweight teenager and if it wasn’t for scouts I wouldn’t have had much within myself to believe in. I think anyone with a good troop nearby and a child harboring even the slightest interest could never go wrong.

Interesting. In Denmark you will not get a booster until at least ten years have passed, and then only after some sort of relevant injury occurs. In Sweden you don't get one until 20 years have passed and then also only after a relevant injury occurs. This is stressful as a Dane living in Sweden, since the intensity of the booster is presumably different between the two nations, but the Swedes insist on going by their rules and presume that the Danish booster is the same as the Swedish booster.
