I remember a long time ago on CSPAM that some "leaked photos" of women in china being tied up /publicly humiliated and tortured turned out to just be run of the mill BDSM erotica

they were holding signs saying "I am a murderer" iirc

The whole idea that a country needs centuries of history to back up their democratic credentials is just some insane poo poo. Just another thing the west likes to bring out against countries it doesn't like with racist poo poo like "Russians are just prone to authoritarianism after living for centuries under dictatorships".

Supposedly, it has a bit of a poor trigger and some quality control issues. I think the PLA has a new rifle coming out.

That said, I would say in general the 1990s were very much a transition-era for the PLA between basically 1950s era Soviet equipment with some local improvements and the incorporation of more Western technology. It isn't so much that the Soviets/Russians didn't have comparable tech but it is just how the Sino-Soviet split worked out.

That said now, I think things are honestly on a pretty even keel.

They sell civilian QBZ-97s (which are the 95 but in 5.56 instead of China's proprietary cartridge) in places outside of the US so they're around outside China where people can but guns.

Word is it kinda sucks in a number of ways (as noted trigger and QC, also mechanical accuracy, has the inherent drawbacks of bullpups, but is serviceable and goes boom and is cheap.

You can see alll about them from 槍耶穌

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRvV4v1FjAo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYoDHe8Kv4U

New gun is the QBZ-191 which goes back to a non-bullpup config and seems to be a modern side charging AR18 derivative.

This is a ridiculously thorough video which came out nowhere from a guy who has apparently done nothing else and is really worth a look, btw.

China’s coronavirus success could see Hong Kong-style subsidised medical care in mainland, health expert says
Professor Li Ling, from Peking University, says China’s successful handling of the pandemic is a good argument for implementation of universal medical care
Currently, reimbursements from China’s public medical insurance programmes are relatively low and capped, meaning the public must cover most health costs

someone also mentioned that learning how to deal with SARS really helped them prepare for covid. not sure about welfare beyond medical care though.
