Yeah, I'm sold on the rulebook bundle. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait getting it because of an insane import fee in combination with an incompetent postal service :(

That's too bad.

I am definitely going to get the new rulebooks, trying to decide if I want to beef up my terrain collection or not as well. Pretty happy with my existing armies, don't know if I want more.

Yeah I'm just gonna get the rulebook as well. Disappointed COVID limited my chance at 2E games to less than a dozen though, at least the new edition is just a small evolution rather than a wild departure

I'm in for the book bundle and the sci-fi tokens. I'll take a look at individual strike force boosters to see if anything looks cool, but I have a pretty decent collection at this point. I guess it depends on how many new types of specialists get added to the game.

Anyone buy these dudes from mantic?:
https://www.manticgames.com/games/kings-of-war/undead/undead-skeleton-horde/

They look great to me but I've had mixed experiences with mantic. I bought some of their Goblins (seemingly a newer product than their older goblins?) and some zombies and found them great; good sculpts, fit together nicely, great details and a good bargain. A friend of mine bought some human two handed sword guys (paladins I think) and they were quite poo poo; didn't fit together well, scale seemed weird, and they had kind of fuzzy details. The difference may just be a plastic vs resin issue, I know I certainly prefer plastic, but maybe their resin is worse than most? Just wondering which to expect with these guys.

Their undead are all pretty great! I consider the skeletons, zombies, and ghouls to be the gold standard for affordable undead minis.

A lot of the older models Mantic made were in a material sometimes called "restic". It was, as described, pretty poo poo. They're currently phasing it out where they can in favor of hard plastic sprues and super high quality resin. I just built and painted up the goblin Winggit and it is a fantastic kit.

The two handed sword guys were probably the first gen Basilean Men at Arms, from the first Kings of War kickstarter, which were ballsed up pretty badly by the Chinese factory doing something weird with the 3D file that caused the bad scale and mushy chainmail. By the time Mantic found out it was too late, only positive is they learned a lesson for future interactions with Chinese factories. They were recently replaced with a much better set, but if you're not picky you can find the old ones in bargain bins.

That makes sense then. I thought the goblins and zombies were awesome, so I recommended the company to him, and he ended up with completely unusable minis. They were some of the worst quality I had ever seen, I know he was talking about sending them back but I'm not sure he ever did. It was lovely timing as he was just getting into the hobby more and I was trying to encourage him, but the poo poo he went through trying to get those guys to work killed his enthusiasm for it. I bought him a box of metal LOTR minis to try and get him back into it, we'll see if that works.

Restic can be identified by looking a bit like PVC boardgame minis yet being surprisingly hard and a bugger to file. Which is a problem as mold lines were common.

They will also probably come packaged in baggies, not preassembled and not on a sprue.

The idea was to produce affordable minis at competitive prices without all of the upfront hard plastics sprue costs. In practice people found that they'd rather pay a bit more and get much nicer minis. Fortunately Mantic grew and are now able to invest in better production methods without going back to Kickstarter over and over.

Yeah they did a pretty solid job with this release. The Stalwarts' arms look a little out of place, but the giant helmets are excellent.

KoW tournament in nine days, definitely not where I need to be for hobby. My army is now all printed at least, but getting it's gonna be a real dash to get basecoats down and models on bases. Here's a Rhinosaur Captain I painted a few weeks ago, probably about 90% done:

What's the second new army in the 2022 CoK? I've been lost in 40k for the last year, but GW's recent dickishness has me looking at my undead and dwarf armies that never got quite finished.

I played what will likely be my last games of Deadzone 2.0 on Saturday. A buddy of mine played Plague across three games and it was the first time I've played against them since he's the only person out here who has that faction and he's never had them painted before yesterday. We increased the game size by 50 points after each game (100, 150, 200) and I switched out factions to try different tactics. My big takeaways are that the Plague are a nightmare and I very, very happy that the Tough rule is being scrapped for HP. There's nothing more disheartening than rolling handful after handful of dice only for absolutely nothing to happen because you can't get over the Armor + Tough wall while the opponent consistently rolls well on a 4+ Survive tests. It's loving brutal.

Game 1, I took 6 Pathfinders. We played Patrol 2.0 and it was a very close game. I nearly won without ever really moving my models. He went for objectives, and I gun downed everything I could see with Tag. The game really could have gone either way, and a better roll for me here or there and a worse one from him could have swung it to an Enforcer victory.

Game 2, I went with Forge Fathers. Force was a Huscarl, three Steel Warriors, and an Iron Ancestor packing two twin-hailstorm autocannons. I don't think I've ever lost a game more badly. With only 5 models on the table at 150 points, there was just very little I could do. The less said, the better.

Game 3, another nail biter. I decided to give Marauders are go because gently caress it why not. At 200 points you get a decent number and variety of units. I had the standard leader with the stealing splat ability, five commandos, a rainmaker, a mauler, a hulk, and a mortar track. By the end of the first turn, I had killed all of his filler units. However, he did end up winning Recon and an Aberration flanked me and that was basically the end of the game. That's an incredibly good recon score in a Divide and Conquer game. Without that, I likely would have won by grabbing objectives.

I finally got around to painting the main cast of the Star Saga box I picked up last year. I haven't decided how much more work into Star Saga I'm going to put. I have the mission creator expansion that has 4 more mercenaries in it, so I will likely paint them. I might do the terrain just because hey nothing wrong with having more painted scatter terrain. However, doing hordes of grunts (there are a lot of grunts in the box) isn't all that appealing. Thematically, leaving them as faceless tokens kind of fits as well. That way player characters feel special being painted and when I pull out a painted baddie, the players will definitely know some poo poo is about to go down.

I might paint up some of the plague dudes though because I could field them in a Mazon Labs Deadzone faction. More Deadzone factions is never a bad thing!

I will say that the quality of the miniatures is adequate, but not great. They're single piece soft plastic and really made with the board gaming crowd in mind. Cleaning mold lines was basically impossible and after a couple of models I gave up entirely and I don't feel bad about it at all. I put more freehand detail into these models than I basically ever have before just because the sculpts are so "low resolution". These results are about as good as I can get, and I am more or less satisfied with them, but I could totally understand if people didn't want to put the effort in. Especially with the grunts, who have a lot of flat surfaces.

It's also interesting comparing my Aberration to the official Deadzone model because I don't know that at a glance I could tell which one was the board game plastic and which was the restic kit. I'd have to get them side-by-side and see if maybe one is slightly larger than the other.

Funnily enough, I'm just starting to think about how to paint up my copy. But I want the minions and main villains to run as Mazon labs, will probably do the heroes last!

The Second Edition for Firefight is officially announced with presales up this Friday. I'm expecting the core box, plus a veteran pack with just the rules and new tokens. I don't think I particularly need anything else, but we'll see what kind of deals they might have. I'll be curious to see if the Marauders have any new vehicles in the works. The old Raptor was always a mini I liked the look of, but just never got around to buying.

The box is pretty hefty and has an absurd number of orcs in it.
