Convo with friend today who I have concluded is closet Tory:
F: "You can't blame Boris for social care crisis it's all governments" (hello who have been in power for 12 years? Using 'Boris' as shorthand for Tories).
F:"It's local authorities' fault because they choose where to spend the money."
Me - depends if they've got the money in the first place. They can't spend what they don't have.
F: "they shouldn't waste it - labour councils blah blah"
F: "£500pw for a care worker sounds like good pay to me (she earns more than that pro rata as a part timer by choice) tell me where to sign up" (TV news last night had interview with care worker doing 12hr days)

Ok they shouldn't waste what they have but when even Tory councils are on TV saying govt is not giving them sufficient funds, and no-one is saying council spending is 100% pure but FFS.

Watching the series back as an adult it was actually the soapbox derby episode which was just sort of an alright episode when I was a kid and now it makes complete sense and was one of the few times homer was a relatable sympathetic dad

The line 'ill just sit here in lil lightning - the car that the simpsons built - and remember that for one brief moment I had a son' hits hard when you're a grown up and realise it's not Bart he's mad at

No it isn't, but it still tramples my bloody lavender.
First 2-3 seasons of the simpsons made them out as undeniably working class and struggling and there's a grittiness to things that works really well

I haven't watched it much for years but the peak for me remains you only move twice which is a few seasons later and past about season 10 I don't think there's any episode that sticks out for good reasons

Can't get no luck.

I see there was oven chat a couple of pages ago.

Let me tell you, Brits do not know how good they have it when it comes to ovens. You can get a decent, name-brand oven (Hotpoint for example) in the UK for ~£200, or something "fancy" like the most basic NEFF one (still very good quality) for £400. These will be well-designed, decent build quality and work well. You also have a pretty free choice of built-in or built-under, plus if you want you can get a "range" oven starting at a bit under £500. Then you can get a separate gas or electric hob for about £100 or an induction one for £200.

I recently bought a new oven in Canada. Pretty much the only choice you have here is a "range" cooker, that is a cooker with the hob built-in. You can get wall ones (to be built-into cabinets) but they're inexplicably wildly more expensive. The cheapest by a mile have glass-topped electric hobs (which are loving terrible). To get one that isn't loving awful starts at £450, and to get a half-decent one you're looking at another couple of hundred. Woe-betide if you want a gas or induction hob. So I bought an induction one for the equivalent of £750. Frigidaire which is supposed to be a "premium" brand... and it's just poo poo. Build quality is awful, and the oven seems to work with its main heating element in the bottom, and then there's a fan at the back which circulates air. I'm used to having the actual heating element at the back where the fan is.

Now, it seems to work, in that the oven gets hot and the air circulates... but the tiniest morsel of stuff dropping onto the bottom of the oven almost immediately starts spewing black smoke, because the bottom surface is the hottest part. Not only that, because it's where the heat is coming from it has big warnings on it saying "DO NOT COVER WITH FOIL" and stuff and it says in the manual that "irrepairable damage may occur" if you cover it with anything to catch spills. loving awful design.

Bought one of their dishwashers too and again, just poo poo quality, poorly thought-out design and it doesn't actually get stuff clean unless you use the highest "power wash" setting which probably negates any supposed efficiency savings from upgrading from the 30-year old dishwasher that was here before. I think I'll look at trying to import appliances if I ever have to buy any again.

going after Gillick competence more generally was always going to be the next step - iirc wasn't one of the lawyers bringing the original case an anti-abortion activist?

Also this bit (via the grauniad) is interesting:

quote:

Referring to a Care Quality Commission report from January that was critical of GIDS, including in relation to aspects of obtaining consent before referral, the appeal court judges said: “The fact that the report concluded that Tavistock had, in certain respects, fallen short of the standard expected in its application of the service specification does not affect the lawfulness of that specification; and it would not entitle a court to take on the task of the clinician.”

since it's a direct challenge to the "starve the beast approach" of undermining a service then using the problems that pop up as an excuse to wreck it.

(to be clear not all the Tavi's problems are resource-related, and there's a broader issue with gender identity and psychiatry in this country anyway, but it certainly hasn't helped)

Looking it up, it's more of a honey-flavoured wine than pure honey mead, which is apparently more traditional, but you might like other ones like Moniack or Lyme Bay more if you were in it for the pure honey goodness. I don't know why supermarkets are so desperate to not just stock actual mead, it's always a honey infused wine.

Jesus might not have been saying "Imagine that one of those filthy Samaritans was the only helpful person on the road!" but if you've called your modern organisation 'The Samaritans' and forgotten to include the "good" part somehow is like calling your organisation 'The [N-Words]'.

Which wouldn't fly for obvious reasons, so why is is OK to discriminate against Samaria?

At least if you use centigrades, you know water boils at 100, and freezes as soon as it dives below 0, which is both far more important in real life than just "feeling" something. In Fahrenheit you get really wonky numbers for both: Like oh yeah the water boils at 212! Also, it's freezing outside tomorrow , the temperature dropped below 32! Makes no sense, complete bollocks

Unknown on the maximum temperature thing, but yes on the atoms falling apart. There is quark-gluon plasma, where the tempereture is sufficient for protons and neutrons to fall apart into free quantum particles.

I think that's what scientists try to find with stuff like super-symmetry and poo poo. Basically, the highest possible temperature would bring you back to the moment of the Big Bang, before matter existed.

After the Big Bang, the young universe immediately started cooling while expanding, and as the temperature dropped, all those weird quarks and then normal particles started to show up until matter started forming, billions of years later, and here we are.

So while there is infinite space for higher temperatures, after a certain energy level is reached you would have re-created a tiny version of the Big Bang. It's probably the same problem as with light speed: To get that far, you'd need infinite energy. And because of this, the highest possible temperature is infinity, similar like how light speed can't be reached either
