real talk, burning green wood sucks, it needs to dry out for months to become usable as firewood. not to say that you can't burn green wood with enough help, but it burns a lot slower and cooler because of all the water

that's one of the problems with these loving huge firestorm wildfires. all the accumulated dry fuel, dead trees, and drought combine get the fire hot enough to boil off the reduced water content inside trees and burn them. smaller fires just burn the leaves, and scorch the bark. the water content and thermal mass of larger trees is enough to protect them from real damage during a few hours of low grade fire exposure during brush fires.

that huge rear end sequoia has survived dozens of fires in its life, simply because it's huge. hopefully it can survive another one

An additional factor in the PNW is the unusual summer droughts we've had over the last decade have killed off some of the more shallow-rooted species so you have large numbers of dead, drying trees standing upright interspersed with the remaining live trees. Some of the dead cedars I've taken down the last couple of years have had a 12% moisture content in the middle of winter. I didn't think it was possible to reach that level of moisture outside a kiln.

California is even worse, although probably different species involved. Someone posted an article in the last thread where researchers were measuring forest floor detritus with 2% moisture content, absolutely insane. Even outside the lack of natural small burns to reduce forest litter these aren't the same forests we had even a few decades ago.

On the bright side we have a system going through dumping huge amounts of rain on us. Rainfall and flash flood warnings up, along with B.C. Hydro warning that trees killed in the beginning of summer heat wave are expected to come down with the wind and rain and cut off our power. Guess we're joining California with two seasons: fire and mud. Time find the candles and put a pot of beans on the stove.

It's fun to talk to old fishermen about how this ain't normal. :crackping:
