current state of the NHS: i'm awaiting assessment for adult autism and just had them phone me to ask if I wanted to have it transferred to a private company because they can get me seen in october to try and get waiting lists down. This is after being referred at the start of March and potentially having to wait until next year otherwise

I did this recently. In Lewisham, private waiting list was 2 months, public was 2+ years.

Happy to talk about it more. I got my adhd diagnosis along side to get medication for that, then the asd diag gives you legal protection, access to adjustments, access to specialist/more informed therapy etc.

The NHS is kind of poo poo with anything mental health related. I know we're not meant to criticise it but it's at BBC levels of poo poo.

"Mate, I'm suicidal & have no self-motivation." "Cool, have some pills and we'll put you on a waiting list for years and do you want to do self-guided CBT in the mean time?"

The thing probably needs twice the funding it gets to cope with the mental health crisis brought on by capitalism, and capitalism is what's ensuring this won't happen. High five.

I'm on the waiting list for adhd assessment too. What exactly do they do to assess adult ASD?

The only thing it's worse for than mental health is trans care. Teen in NI recently killed themselves after 6 years on waiting lists... (3 years, then moved, then another 3 years). It's extremely funny (in a bad way) that puberty blockers take like 3-4 years to get prescribed. You asked for these at 14, you're 18 now, now your puberty will be blocked.

I'm on the waiting list too. Got a letter back in February. The wait could be anywhere between 18-36 months. I never got an option to go private. Apparently this was something one of my counsellors with austistic children mentioned to my psychiatrist over a decade ago and nothing ever happened.

I haven't seen anyone in person in years. I've travelled past the Homefirst Community Centre and the Dalriada clinic where we used to meet. Windows boarded up now. Last time I met someone was in a hospital in a bare room that I'm sure I once met my sister in - when she was in a bed recovering from a lumbar puncture. The woman i went to see asked me if I wanted something to drink and I told her water was fine. She hesitated and said "The tap water here is a bit uh..."

If any loving place should have clean water it's a hospital.

If you talk to your GP you can get a private referral and the service can go gently caress themselves. Then you can find a private place that does diagnoses (there's plenty, tell them you have a gp referral, go on their waiting list, and then there's the paying for it of course.

Do you have any idea how much pressure my local GP is under right now? I am not going to bother him with anything unless it's a genuine injury or a serious illness. I don't mean to trivialize mental health issues but I think I'm in control of myself right now - better than I have been for a while.

That's entirely your choice to make, given that you said the waiting list is still at least another year or two keep this advice in mind for some time a bit quieter then imo.
