Which rifle is this? I could use a ludicrously OP new hotness
The older one is the Phaser Full Auto Rifle (Dsc) from the lobi store which is exceptionally unexciting in terms of visuals which is probably why nobody talks about it, but its primary fire does 1/2/3 shots in quick succession and in true Cryptic balance fashion all of said shots do full damage so it basically does like twice the damage of normal weapons, and the secondary is a pretty strong full-auto style sweep. No animation locks or weird gimmicks or anything, just quick and strong.

The newer one being talked about was the Portable Phaser Cannon Special Issue, also from the lobi store.

Same here. I'm fuckin terrible at ground combat.
I am absolutely not an expert at ground combat but the biggest rule of thumb is to make sure your captain's main gear is XV and ideally gold quality, it absolutely does matter, it's inexpensive compared to space gear, and each individual piece has more of an effect on your performance than the equivalent space gear. If you're gilded out you can basically faceroll most content even with crappy whatever equipment.

The current meta loadout right now is Burnham's CQC Armor from the Disco rep, with the environment suit version being just as good, and the Na'kuhl Temporal Operative Personal Shield from the Temporal Front task force, paired with whatever absurd lobi weapon (or the tommygun or whatever if you're fighting borg) as your primary weapon and the Na'kuhl Temporal Operative Minigun as the secondary; the minigun is poo poo but the two-piece set bonus is exceptionally good and you don't need to weapon swap if you have a good enough gun anyway.

As for kits... gently caress there's a billion modules and it's pretty obvious which ones are decent or not when you play with them, medium cooldowns and quick activations with limited animation locks seem to be big things. The general meta is to stack kit performance/KitPerf on the kit itself since it's the ground equivalent of EPG and everything you do is space magic, with the best option right now being the Risian Kit from the summer event since you can re-engineer it to be nothing but KitPerf and it has a decent straight weapon damage boost, but that's a pain to get outside the season so just use whatever meanwhile. It's a personal preference but the Ball Lightning module from the summer event is a bit crazy if you have decent kit performance since it deletes everything vaguely near you, beyond that I uh have no idea just mess around until you find stuff you like?

Depending on your prof there are lots of things that are great to get. In particular Mudd's Time Device which just owns. Chain Conduit Capacitor is chain lightning on a short cd if you like spamming. Collective Will is the big borg lightning.

Oh yeah the Assimilate kit is pretty fun too. Not for the drone spawning gimmick, they're pretty weak and have horrible AI even by Cryptic standards, but the actual primary effect is still a three-minute mid-damage DoT with an AOE and is free fire-and-forget damage against TFO bosses and the like.

ETA: Like almost everything else in the lobi store, they're bind-on-pickup, so not available on the exchange. You've got to open some gamble-boxes to get the lobi necessary. Quick guesstimate is 20-25 boxes. At current key prices, that's probably 200-250m EC for both.

I thought the average lobi per box was 5, did they change that? That's a lot of boxes to open for 40-50 lobi.

Burnham armor, Nakhul 2pc, Kelvin Timeline Pistol (just cause I like it), Mudd's Time Device, Motivation, Graviton Spike, Trajectory Bending, Ball Lightning, and then the Agony Turret Ambush from the giveaway just because I don't know what to put in the 6th slot and it seems to be doing pretty good for itself.

e: Traits wise Creativity, Dulce et Decorum est, Upgraded Gear, Adaptive Offense, Pistol training, Soldier, Strike Team Specialist, Hive Mind, Vicious, and Terran Vision.

Key prices are still crazy, though. And I'm sure they'll only get worse.

The Lower Decks stuff being ALL lobi when obviously a great part of it should've been lockbox is some dark vision of the future poo poo. I can easily see them shift to only giving out traits via lobi, INSANELY more expensive for the player, promotes lootbox opening, and they can say it's not gambling since lobi is guaranteed.

Honestly? I'm kinda OK with that. It's a grind you can calculate. Anyone can do the math and figure how how many EC that is, how much dil/zen THAT is, etc. It's not half as predatory as the slot machine BS they use to hook in people with gambling addictions.

At the end of the day all the lockbox only poo poo is already insanely overpriced if you don't want to gamble for it. Ships so expensive you have to do it through trade channels because the exchange can't handle that much EC etc.

It's possible to earn large amounts of EC while playing, but the conversion rate of keys to lobi is pretty loving terrible. Like what getting 50 lobi is how many dollars? 10$ if you're lucky? 40$ for 200? That's a pretty grim conversion rate. Sure there's less gambling but it's way less accessible. Buying a lockbox trait is like 20-30mil, which is 3/10 of the cost of 50 lobi.

Sure, but my point is that if they just flat out say "it's gonna be $350 worth of STO FunBux" that's something different than saying "It's an item in this box and it only cost $.30 for a shot at winning it! Give it a shot and by the way we're blasting winner announcements across your screen in ESD unless you find the setting to turn that off! :siren: holy poo poo look at that another BIG WINNER!" odds of winning are 1 in 10000

The value is garbage either way, but at least one is a value that someone can make a halfway rational calculation about, the other is intentionally preying on people with gambling problems.

IDGAF if someone is dumb enough to pay $500 for the diamond super delux elite+ legendary Dennis Eckersley with the ultra rare mullet of +5 pitching, but it's bullshit when they con people into dumping major cash on one more pull of the gacha.

Honestly, you're right. I was just reacting from the selfish position of what lets me get poo poo the cheapest, instead of what's probably better overall. Of course it's cryptic so they aren't going to find a nice equilibrium for this poo poo, but it would be better if they stopped preying on people with gambling addictions.

FYI, it looks like the game has changed to not track ship mastery progress if you've discharged a ship. I thought I might grind out mastery traits I don't have on my main, but now the only way to see what mastery traits I have is to check my unlocked traits and cross-reference with the wiki to see where those traits come from, if I just get a ship out of a box it lists mastery at zero even if I've previously unlocked the trait.

It seems like it’d inflate the price of traits that aren’t as good, like the boff buffing one. I’d have grabbed that if it was a lockbox booby prize.

They went with a more detailed look that the decade old champions engine struggles to deliver. Originally it only had to deliver simple cartoony superhero/villain characters.

Given what they had to work with I think the artist did well. IDK, not a visual artist.

Intel has an older giveaway for STO that's still going: The Star Trek Online Alliance Reborn MatHa Bundle Giveaway. If you haven't already claimed it, it includes:
  • T6 Mat'Ha Raptor (usable with cross-faction flying, if you've got a L65 klank)
  • 36 Inventory Slots
  • 36 Bank Slots
  • 2 BOff Slots
  • 3 Captain Retrain Tokens

It's a decent expansion of some limited resources in the early game. The Mat'Ha, like the Paladin, is an older T6. It's way out of meta for top-tier DPS, but it's still a solid performer. It's got innate cloaking, and a chunky design that I don't hate.

There's not a lot of mirror options for cryptic to put in a Mudd's bundle, but the ones there aren't half bad. There's the mirror connie (good ship and trait), the mirror engle (great trait), and the styx (meta for torp builds) in lockboxes, with the mirror crossfield in promo boxes. Finding a mirror lobi ship would be a problem since they've already put all the mirror lobi ships in Mudd's bundles.
