I really wish i'd been in a position to buy one of the 160s when they came out new. That amount of power feels just about right for that car.

Lotus/Caterham is the "premium" brands and you'll pay for it. If you're more worried about fun than brand prestige look at Westfield, Birkin, Brunton MK Cars, Super 7 Cars and Exocet. If you really don't care about brand look into the Locost (http://www.locostusa.com/) for a home built alternative. Absolutely the most fun you can have for the money.

My locost is right around 1200lb with a 2003 Yamaha R1 motorcycle engine, it is stupid quick and handles amazing despite being built by some guy in a shed in Mississippi.

That R1 powered Locost sounds loving awesome. Did you build it, buy it used, or buy it assembled new from some dealer? Does it have a reverse gear? Is it street legal?

Your ideas intrigue me, and I would like to subscribe to your news letter. Is there a thread or more details about yours?

Mendeola Transaxle based on what I can find. Which are way more affordable than I thought they'd be. Seem to be between $6k-$10k.

I bought it, third owner. First built it back in 2004-05 as a 'reasonable' daily driver by a mechanical engineer so it's almost fairly usable. Reverse is via a F250 starter and works ok but if you hold it for more than a few seconds the smoke starts to come out...it's honestly easier to just push it. Fully street legal, registered and insured as a 1964 Lotus replica. It isn't great on the street with the motorcycle engine but I've driven much worse. I did kind of an effort post when I bought it - https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3032817&userid=106767&perpage=40&pagenumber=3#post487153997

Here's some laps at National Corvette Museum track, pretty mild as I was fighting fuel starvation issues and this was only second session at this track or in the car - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxOCZQBnVO0

Thank you, it is absolutely the stupidest car and the most fun. It is stupid fun passing expensive cars on track while throwing that thing around like an absolute dumbass.

Price wise if you're looking at something similar it kind of goes...
Lotus/Caterham - $25K and up to well over $50k
Westfield/Birkin/etc - $12-20k
Locost - $7500-15k

This car has broken me for "full size" cars on street and on track, you just can't compare to 1200lb. If you've got questions shoot me a PM or I guess post here but if there is enough interest I'll start a thread I guess. I'm probably selling a car or two in the coming months, as well as probably the locost, and will be replacing with a lotus or caterham of some flavor.

Having owned heavy cars and then driving a 3rd gen Civic and getting into a nice Miata that part of my brain flipped and went 'this is the enjoyment of driving that you've been missing, light weight'. So now all I want is a superlight car with enough power to shift it. Bike engine is a little much for me but I'm glad to equation works. Colin Chapman was onto something?! :v:

I've always been one for light weight cars but the locost was a massive jump to add lightness. I got my first E30 down under 2400lb which made it very evenly matched power:weight with my friends E30 M3 I ran track days with. I will probably end up with a garage of small sporty cars if things continue going the way they look to be, some with decent power and some without. The 1200lb Fiat with 23hp is arguably more fun to drive around town than the 1200lb locost with 150hp.

Finishing replacing clutch pack in Locost today hopefully then taking it for a drive, if I remember I'll throw the gopro on it.

I made a project thread about it a while back that has all the details and more pictures: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3979232, but I'll sum it all up here for the sake of brevity. It's a kit car that consists of a purchased frame and suspension components, mated up to a chevy 2.2l ecotec engine taken out of a wrecked Chevy Cobalt purchased from an insurance auction. Mine is the All Terrain version, that have a street/track version as well which is actually a lot more common. If you can find one, get a SS cobalt with the turbocharged 2.0 liter, although there are upgrade packages that can add a turbo to a 2.2 as well. There is a guy on the Goblin forums who is running a 600 horsepower goblin on autocross tracks, thats in a car that weighs in around 1600 lbs. Mine is currently a stock 2.2, so running around 155 horse but still a ton of fun.
