The only reason I know it's out is because of the Steam store banner. On the one hand, it's just another boring MMO, so who cares. On the other hand, gently caress Amazon.

99% of people would have a better time with Super Mario RPG and it doesn't require a phone book-sized manual to play.

I heard Ultima VII (a CRPG from 5 years earlier) is good but the font is unreadable and combat just kinda happens while you sit there and watch.

Super Mario RPG has a great soundtrack and a lot of variety from the platforming and minigames. Plus it doesn't feel nearly as antiquated as other RPGs because of the timed hits and lack of random encounters.

Combined with the fact that the new svelte character design you are supposed to want to "protect" was immediately subjected to a gauntlet of really gross and uncalled for grimdark torture porn scenarios in the very first act of the very first game of the reboot. :chloe:

People would have been calling it the gently caress out if it was an anime game, where 'childlike daughter-waifu you want to protect' is a long running stereotype of sexual pandering.

Also funny how Bayonetta was such a faultline at the height of the 'video games are the cause of misogyny' era where once the dust settles it seems that women generally love her.

I feel like a lot of critiques of the 2013 tomb raider game didn't play it or only looked at the first hour because the criticism is weird in so far as the narrative thrust of the story is satisfyingly pulling off "doofy rich kid ends up in a horrible situation and comes out of it a very scarred killing machine". As the character gets more confident the gory deaths stop happening, her presence and posture in cutscenes changes, the survival mechanics give way to more weapon mode, culminating in the sequence where she goes absolutely apeshit on the bad guys as they flee in panic'd fear from her.

Of course she comes across as somewhat helpless and unable to fend for herself at the beginning, you need a baseline or else she's just nathan drake blasting people in the face and snapping necks no qualms and theres no change in her status. It would be like trying to make Homeworld: Cataclysm and have the "this is the warship kuun-lan" scene without introducing them at the start as hapless miners with no weapons and a horrifying butchering at the hands of their enemies.

Do I think they could have removed the specific special death on the river rapid scene basically everyone gets and if it wasn't in the game most players wouldn't even know it has special deaths and that lasts like 3 seconds longer than it needs to? Oh yeah, yeah they could have.

Honestly my main issue with the Tomb Raider reboot is that it just didn’t need to happen, at least not as a Tomb Raider game. We had seen Lara’s origin covered a ton of times already up to that point and not a single Tomb Raider Fan was asking for a darker and more serious and more ‘realistic’ reboot of the series.

Video games in general don't really need to happen, they're not important.

It wasn't for tomb raider fans, who are weird old nerds that like bad games, its for people who have never played them but have heard of the Tomb Raider brand.

pretty much this, don't get me wrong I enjoyed TR2013, heck even my wife played through it separately but it completely ditched all the coolest bits of Tomb Raider - the ancient temples, the feeling of isolation and solitude, the actual loving tombs.

I played the second one (Rise or Shadow?) when it got down to about £5 in the Steam sale, it wasn't dreadful or anything but as soon a crafting was introduced I noped out

The crafting in Rise is literally identical to the first game, where they pretend the game is an indie survival game for maybe an hour or so and then you get right back into the usual Tomb Raider poo poo and you literally never have to worry about it again outside of ad hoc "hold down a button to make more arrows" type stuff.

I don't even remember if Shadow has crafting elements. They kinda went hard in the opposite direction and now it's all "sell treasure to buy weapon upgrades and outfits with magic bonuses" type stuff.
