The UK and US had a shaky time in Iraq trusting each other from the start.
The US wanted total control of the air, which lead to blue on blue deaths of some UK soldiers.
The US also bugged the UK meeting rooms, a so called ally.

Not when its indefinite and you have a limited budget and your allies haven’t agreed to this plan

And yeah i forgot it was just Afghanistan where this came out. I don’t actually remember hearing much about Iraq gently caress ups. I don’t remember hearing much about it in general after the initial invasion.

Seeing the mention of '71 reminded me of a film of the same name - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2614684/.

It's mostly a very tight "behind enemy lines" thriller following a rookie British soldier who knows feck all about Northern Ireland, but it includes elements such as the British army presence escalating tensions and leading to the formation of the Provisional IRA, as well as collusion between British intelligence and the Loyalist paramilitaries.

It's on Netflix in the occupied six counties, not sure about worldwide availability.

thatcherism and a society which never really recovered from that particular neoliberal incompetence that later got called shock doctrine is where i lay most of the current domestic blame, although an analysis that discounts birth rates and demographics following would be incomplete. on a broader level a total failure to ever come to terms with an imperial legacy in honestly any way, meaningful or otherwise, in combination with legacy being literally all that is left. the most bleakly horrific press on the planet. uh, inbreeding, alcoholism, environmental pollutant tolerance that really should send people weeping. aristocracy and landlordism. god, how long do i have.

Didn't the Australians have a referendum on becoming a republic & shat it because they couldn't decide if the President would be appointed by Parliament or elected by the people? Oh no, a tough choice, better just keep the English monarch & not think about it.

i don't know specifically in the australian case but in canada it was literally just to get a bunch of conservatives onside for dominion, iirc. and it is of course a constant political football - not the least of which in french quebec for painfully obvious reasons - or if it is a sensible idea or remotely moral signal to have her on our money and and such should we continue her entirely ceremonial function. it's mostly the same people now as it was then.
