You can outstrafe them like the javelin goblins or if you are feeling frisky you can dodge roll through their attack to close the gap, they have a long cooldown before they can attack again

Dodge roll is the fastest, easiest method yes. They do not attack very fast after they loose a volley.

Might not be possible if you have to deal with server lag though, I've only fought them in singleplayer.

I just used fire arrows from a distance and it was easy as pie.

Is there a way to console command in a maypole? I accidentally deleted mine and I don't want to wait until the next season to rebuild it.

You can roll to avoid the spit and poke 'em after as well. Easier when its only one or two of them.

This, they are sceptical to fire damage. Two fire arrows are usually enough. Pick your fight, try and approach so you can get one at range before the others know you are there.

The only real problem I've had with them is stumbling upon a pit when fighting/running from something else. Once you get tarred then you're hosed.

Kiting them into Lox or vice versa and watching from a distance is entertaining.

I discovered my first few tar pits by just going to all the beams of light from loot drops. Seems that some of the night time patrol spawners were a bit too close to the pits in my world. Then I wouldn't see the tar monsters until it was too late.

Are the tar monsters called Growths and do they look like black oozes? gently caress those things. I was exploring a swamp and didn't realize just how close to the plains I was getting until I suddenly got hit with two blasts of black and green ichor and couldn't run away fast enough. I eventually got everything back, but I had to make a couple runs to do it, getting closer to my portal each time, because those loving things just wouldn't leave me alone. And of course, they're not hostile to anything but me. I'm sure when I'm better-geared (something more than troll leather at least), and have room to engage them, it won't be so bad, but that was a frustrating session.

Oh, and that swamp netted me a full longship hold full of iron ore (and another 22 chunks that I have to carry with me and drop when I portal home for repairs and stuff), so it was worth it in the end. :)

Yeah, they're Growths. They actually are hostile to basically everything though, so at least there's that. Bonus points is that even if you kill them all AND drain the tar (dig around it and redirect it, then you can get the tar that spawns with the thing itself plus any loot that dropped in the tar) they will still respawn about every two hours.

I typically make my bases inside the Meadows and within spitting distance of at least two other biomes of decent size. My last playthrough was a little bit too close to the plains as well, so I would be in maybe bronze/iron gear and sometimes hear the giggle of a Fusling and immediately run the hell away.

If you turn on the console you can use 'devcommands' then 'debugmode' and then press B to turn off build requirements. That'll let you build one whenever you like.

Just picked this back up for the first time since early launch, trying to stay out the thread to avoid spoilers because I think this game does discovery really well. Quick question though, what is the quickest way to find the trader now?

Outside of quasi-cheating through the map seed viewer? There isn’t one. As far as I know just appear on your map when you get close enough to one.

If you don't want to look up your seed, you can just sail around. The trader icon thankfully shows up fairly deep into fog of war, so just skimming the coasts of black forests is usually enough to find it.

Honestly though you should just try sailing around looking for him though. You don't have to get particularly close to him either, the discovery radius for the map icon is huge (like 10x times the map uncovering radius). So definitely attempt to look for him first. You're going to need to spend time looking for him anyway, and none of the poo poo he sells is vital, though some of it is very convenient.

Also, like the boss shrines, he can be found in multiple locations, but once on the map, can only be found there. I guess that's better, but I've never found him without explicitly looking for him.

You can find multiple boss shrines though. But yes I think once you've found the trader he doesn't spawn at any of his other potential spawns

Vil

Correct. Trader is very quantum: he's got 10 (?) possible spawn locations per world, and he'll always be at the first one that a player gets close enough to (and politely mark himself on the map in the process).

Once "observed" in this manner, the possibilities collapse and he will not be found at any of the other spawns.

So I built a boar farm yesterday, and then skeletons spawned and ran past me to the fence and shot them to death with arrows. Ok, lesson learned. I built a stone wall around the farm, and then a troll event started which spawned a troll literally inside the boar pen, and he murdered them all. Help.

I’d say tame a Lox to protect your settlement but their stomp attacks absolutely destroy everything.

I tamed and saddled one after a lotta creeping around the plains. They’re great for overland travel, since their stamina pool is enormous and they move faster than a naked Viking. But their big hit box means they can get beat up real quick, especially by deathsquitoes. If one gets a “sneak attack” on your lox that’s a third of its health gone just like that.

Hopefully they expand the riding system cuz I enjoy what we have so far. Would dig some saddle bags and a way to armor/heal the thing. Otherwise it’s just a biiiit too much of a pain for the benefit you get, and the fact it’s stuck on the landmass where you tame it is a bummer.

Build workbenches. Mobs won't spawn within the build radius.

As for stuff bee-lining your boars, just make sure you're an available target (not somewhere that you had to jump to get to) and/or kill them faster.

I don't think I could play without Epic Loot. It adds some really cool features and makes the food/stamina changes feel much less annoying. The bounties are a fun diversion too.

I love those. Just seeing your picture gave me a lil dopamine hit.

Now that the iron grind is rebalanced (fewer swings per break, more iron per break) I find myself enjoying Swamp excursions a lot more. My current world has some great swamp placements, including one that’s landlocked with meadow and mountain all around.

Make sure you're always rested if you're going into dangerous territory. Mix up your foods between meat and veggies to balance your health and stamina, and try not to drain all of your stamina while chaining attacks, sprinting, or chopping/mining. Keep a good supply of food at your spawn so you can always get your buffs back if you need to corpse run. Dodge rolls have tremendous iframes in this game, if you roll as a Troll is attacking you're invincible and create space, giving you time to back up and regain stamina from the roll. Most important is patience while maintaining your stamina, bait an attack, roll away, shoot an arrow or two, make sure your stamina regenerates and repeat. If you get attacked by multiple big targets, like trolls, it's often better to simply disengage and drop aggro, then come back at the situation from a better position.

Don't forget that trolls take a long time to wind up a hit. You can walk regular speed away from them and avoid the hits as long as you moving directly away, and not angling off to the side.
