I think he's talking about the overpopulation thing. This is a common litmus test in climate circles for whether you are serious or a blood and soil fascist. The refrigeration systems alone of the rich World produce more effective greenhouse gas than the bottom two billion people in the world. So he's correct in saying overpopulation isn't the problem, although as desertification in the tropics increases I think this common rhetorical position is going to start looking naive.

The realistic nightmare scenario this Century as I see it is not that the tropics become depopulated, because even in the worst scenarios before 2100 the tropics only see about 30 days of lethal weather a year. The real nightmare scenario is that the tropics revert to a pre-industrial high mortality population regime. With a high birth rate and high death rate, the population in the tropics wouldn't actually decrease. But it would produce a permanent population of miserable people who are desperate to escape at any cost. In this scenario the rich world would find itself in a never-ending Refugee crisis that could only realistically be solved by evacuating the tropics or with machine guns and barbed wire.

Captain Chakotay? I guess the Federation really did go "Meh, the other Maquis are all dead now and the Cardassian border issue is no longer a problem, all charges dropped."

So of the main Voyager cast, we'll have had Janeway, Chakotay, Paris, Seven and the EMH appearing in other Treks. Meanwhile, DS9 has had Bashir, Quark and a statue of O'Brien. Seems a tad uneven...

Actually, what have the main character crossovers been? Off the top of my head:
TOS
Kirk (TNG, DS9, LD cameo)
:spock: (TNG, DS9, JJ, DIS, LD cameo, SNW to come)
Bones (TNG, DS9)
Scotty (DS9, TNG)
Uhura (DS9, SNW to come)
Sulu (VOY)
Chekov (I supposed Generations counts as TNG, DS9)
Rand (VOY)

TNG
Picard (DS9, PIC duh)
Riker (DS9 as Tom, VOY, ENT, LD, PIC)
Data (PIC)
Crusher
Troi (VOY, PIC)
Worf (DS9)
Wesley
[Q (DS9, VOY, LD, PIC to come)]

DS9
Sisko
Kira
Odo
Dax
O'Brien (TNG, LD)
Bashir (TNG)
Quark (VOY)
Jake

VOY
Janeway (TNG, PRO)
Chakotay (PRO)
Seven (PIC)
The Doctor (TNG)
Paris (LD)
Torres
Kim
Neelix

ENT

The only crossover we got on ENT was Zefram Cochrane in the pilot, which was an interesting choice.

I barely count the TOS crew on DS9 since that was just footage from an old episode.

There was a great cameo by an ENT actor on the most recent What We Do in the Shadows.

James Cromwell played characters on TNG and DS9 before that, so it’s not THAT out there that he showed up as Zef for a few seconds on ENT.

I really want to know what goes on in the Disco and Picard writing rooms. Its clear people there have watched Star Trek, but I don't think they really understand why people like Star Trek. Trek works best when its an ensemble show, when its a bit goofy and not all serious all the time. This one of the reasons Stamets/Tilly stuff has been my favorite scenes in the last season because it feels a lot more like Star Trek then just Burnham crying.

An entire minute of Janeway and she didn't genocide any alien species or drink a single sip of coffee. What did they do to poor Janeways character :(

But yeah, tone and Dialogue is all a bit kiddish for my taste, but as it's like literally a cartoon aimed at children, that's all completely fine and good. Looks like they at least put effort into it, so good for them. Hope it does well. Most children sci-fi is complete garbage, so be good if they can make something quality.

Eh, I think it's more that they're positioning Disco as the "The Universe is being threatened and we're sending our best special effects at it" show. It's more of a show tuned towards the movie side of Star Trek rather than the TV side of Star Trek.

Lower Decks is clearly the grungier, DS9-like, TNG-continuity show and the comedy show. If done correctly SNW could be the more episodic style, TOS like show. I guess prodigy is the all-adventure kids show.

I don't know what Picard is, really.

But I think the idea that Kurtzman/CBS have in mind is that there's at least one or maybe one and a half Star Trek shows among the many that can be entertaining and enjoyed by everyone. We'll see if that works in practice, but Kurtzman et. al. got enough audience out of what they're already produced that they got a five-year contract extension, so there's one thing that's pretty clear - it's making good money for someone.

Instead of Riker and Troi, have it be Berman and Braga inexplicably on the NX-01, and it turns into a psychological horror where neither of them can distinguish a fantasy Enterprise from a set on the Paramount lot.

It of course ends with a 1993 shattering effect and Jonathan Frakes screaming at the camera.

I don't know what Picard is, really.

Yeah Picard and Disco seem to be the most similar, and I see a reason for one, but not both. With Lower Decks, SNW, Prodigy, and Disco, you have quite a bit of Star Treck but aiming for very different tones, which is smart if you want to avoid fan burn out. I think there trying to make Picard the more thoughtful prime time continuity Star Trek and Disco the more action Hollywood prime time continuity Star Trek but, yeah that didn't really work out that way.

Does makes sense though. Picard just, you know needed to actually be written like that. All the pre-press made it seem like that was there aim though.
