the EU makes poor regions in rich countries poorer, middle-class places in poor countries poorer, poor places in poor countries richer and rich people all around very rich indeed if you're from some welsh coal village the EU has been bad for you in part because the rules about state aid mean that you can't even really demand something to do once they shut down the coal mines, you're expected to up and leave for whatever job will have you not just anywhere in your country, but anywhere in the single market. you're also going to be competing with everyone from everywhere in the single market, often people with lower expectations and less negotiating power than you do. leaving by itself was never going to fix anything - especially leaving under a late-capitalist tory government was always going to be a further ability for the oligarchs to make some money in arbitrage - but resentment towards the EU in especially deprived areas of richer countries is not entirely irrational

The Falklands are almost exactly the same size as Northern Ireland. Both are mostly treeless, filled with sheep and Scots settlers who really want to identify as British. Rename them as New Ulster, offer one-way sailings from Larne/Belfast and kill two birds with one stone.

gonadic io posted:To hell or to Falkland lol at giving up land in order to do a genocide of the tiny bit you have left, because you won't just give the land back like this seemed like a plan for when things had got uncontrollable but at no point was it even considered that they could just get rid of the problem entirely and walk away. It would have caused massive short-term damage to Southern Ireland but not even that could interest them over the sheer thrill of occupying at least a piece of Ireland.

I had to look it up but it seems that from 2013-2017 we imported an average of 76% of our spuds from the EU. Tescos will absolutely run out of taters before December 20th, I have no doubt about this.
