one thing i like about the town project board is it is real easy to log in, check it, see if there's anything that is cheap on trading post to turn in, turn it in, and close the game periodically while doing other stuff and passively get levels. my MB standing is now well ahead of my actual level from this lmao

one thing i should note to people since i didn't say it here is the town board quests for like "Craft a set of crude iron pillaging armaments" or "Cook carb rations" or whatever else are really good to take and go to the crafting bench to see what materials they use, because some of them are insane (like the dairy bundle you can make by just milking the cow next to the kitchen) and will a.) cost you nearly nothing b.) level you like 15-30 levels in that skill at a time

I'm at nearly 100 cooking and its mostly from the dairy bundles (and a couple others) popping up as they give a stupid amount of crafting experience on top of their other rewards, similar thing w/ weaponsmithing and armorsmithing i've devoted no other resources to those skills except town board quests and they are in the 60-70 range (probably invested a total of idk 50g tops doing them)

The corruption spires are the most interesting thing in the game and at least on my server literally nobody interacts with it. I'm still wondering if keeping those rifts in check keeps the invasion events from occurring and possibly downgrading settlements, and I may never know, because nobody does them ever. Maybe they're not doing them on purpose because they want the invasion events to occur? If that's even how it works?
keeping a territory clear of corruption only delays the inevitable invasion and not even for that long. the thing that should have saved the east coast goons on Royollo on the first weekend was the first invasion popping while we were getting pvp influence pressure all day in Brightwood. there was surprise because people were clearing out the corruption towers pretty well and relief initially because it was supposed to halt all pvp influence gain until after the invasion. except it didn't for the other factions :argh:

I think companies that make MMOs should really hire an additional position that none of them seem to hire: a sociology specialist. Someone who sees past the individual pieces of the game (crafting costs, gathering item rarity, level-up pace, etc.) and looks for things like perverse incentive, interplayer friction that can be avoided, and so on. Nobody ever seems to think for even a moment "what will the players actually end up doing once they're in this game?" That doesn't necessarily mean blocking off fun things they find (like Blizzard is wont to do) but just thinking, even briefly, if people are going to be doing really off the wall poo poo just to get by. Is it necessarily a great idea for the PVE players to let people skin poo poo you kill? Wouldn't it have been slightly better to tie that to the PVP flag perhaps? That is a rare example of a PVP game where the PVE players actually have a griefing advantage.
i think a lot of that is the responsibility of the game's designers. i'm reminded of the bit in the NoClip documentary of Astroneer's development where Samantha Kalman is describing the survival/crafting/building/exploring game player archetypes and each example was a spot on description of either me or one of my friends who play a shitload of those kinds of games. no wonder it was a complete delight to play all the way to the end. it feels like AGS's designers are real bad at understanding their audience or even what audience they're trying to cater to or they're getting pressure from the suits who don't.

i really like the game so far, still rocking the rapier/musket build which hasn't really been problematic except for when i got trained (lol) in that tower in cutlass keys. also, i get the npcs seem repetitive, but the zones have seemed fairly diverse as i level? i've put about 90 hours in.

amrine expedition was funny the first time with my friends who are used to running wow mythics because we just bunched up on mobs and button mashed. trying the lv 35 dungeon tonight.

It isn't hard to understand and I'm not trying to get on your case like some others, I'm trying to engage with the points you made in your post! My point is fairly simple: the exact environmental storytelling stuff you like exists in the same way in the other games you namechecked, only there's more of it and it's done better. It's only more obvious in New World because there's gently caress all else.

Hit level 52, and I think I'm about done. I had fun getting to this point and somehow failing upwards to being in the "inner circle" of my faction, but a lot of the flaws I had in Alpha almost a year ago are still here. It just seems like they pushed them back by 20 levels or so.

At 50, I'm basically just dried up on quests and the few I do have are ridiculously hard with Life Staff/Rapier. Constant respawns to mobs on tops of towers, having to crawl through level 60 mobs to get to the areas I need, constant travel to certain crafting benches burning through my Azoth, etc. The wars are fun, but there's not much of a point to them and gets to be a bit much if your faction is trying to keep up with them even semi-seriously. So, basically, my game has become "spam the faction board or run portals," which isn't a super engaging way to grind out 8 more levels.

I've spent worse $40, and it's easy enough to pop in for a few minutes, check the landscape, update my company's territory stuff, etc. I'll be curious what they add in the future or what changes they make, but two weeks seems like a good stopping point to going hard in the pain on it.

There's times I think the game would be better off just not having levels and going purely on gear and weapon mastery to gate progression.

Just make the end game the whole game. And focus all your energy on making that a better experience.

The Secret World was an interesting case of quest design because it showed how much investment matters to giving a poo poo about the quests. You go to an area where there are cool conspiratorial designs and neat monsters, you are way into it. You go to an area that sucks rear end (Egypt) and its a total slog. Quests don't fundamentally change, but the area does.

Did somebody mention the best dungeon in any MMO ever?! (That would be The Ankh from The Secret World)

Now that I'm in the late 20s this game is getting very grindy. I still want to level up to try all the other dungeons and sign up for a war and capture a fort at least once just so I can see what all of the game is like. Shouldn't take too long once I actually hit the cap, not like there's a ton of content.

This is where I am right now, our server constantly runs corruption groups for people to grind out 40-60 but 1) Tier 4 staff bug causing lvl 55 rifts to never close 2) Portals bug out and despawn 90% of the time, resulting in no 2k exp reward. Super frustrating.

I also specifically switched from DEX Rapier/Musket to FOC Rapier/Lifestaff just because mobs in those upper zones constantly respawn on top of one another and hit hard to the point that I was running out of consumables without self healing. Literally tried to access a resource node that 2 mobs were guarding, and by the time I killed both of them and started hitting the node they respawn on top of it again.

At the moment I'm just grinding the poo poo out of resources and lifeskilling, but then I'm stuck with having no refining reagents since I don't need to hit chests as much anymore. Then all that's left to do is grind out faction tokens with PVP quests to buy more converters. One of the rival faction towns is really in need of a war at the moment, I was getting over 2% influence per quest handin.

My server is dominated by green with them owning everything but cutlass keys and first light which are purple and yellow respectively.

Purples brilliant plan to take the map back is to trigger wars constantly because "they're already 60 so they can't get more xp but we still get xp doing this" they've also moved to a Secret Discord to prevent spies and require you to show up to war 1.5 hours early lol

tbh, my biggest complaint is that in a pvp focused game, level cap should be like... 40. 60 is just too mivu of a grind to get into end game pvp, which you basically need to be at (which faction gear at a minimum, which is another 8 hours of pure leveling), if you want to partake in siege fun

CuddleCryptid

Protip, don't do Amrine unless you're at several levels over the recommended one. I just had a group severely struggle to even get down the basic enemies while I tanked and our healer ended up not being a healer. We got all the way to the end and just had to quit at the boss, an hour and a half plus tons of repair parts later.

You actually unlock a bunch of quests at 60 that give you gear better than the faction stuff. Most are soloable up until a certain point. It still takes way too long to hit 60 though yeah.

or maybe the main event was that LotR mmo they cancelled a while ago

The LOTR mmo was being done by some Chinese company who was acquired by Tencent. It was cancelled because Amazon and Tencent couldn't come to monetary terms.

Honestly they could reskin New World into a few different games and have it be pretty successful. Warhammer Age of Sigmar would work really well with this honestly. Provided they shore up all the pve complaints we've been talking about, naturally.
