Has Kate appeared yet this season? I don't remember last week's much, but I can't recall her in the Kim K episode. They even replaced her as Lindsey Graham.

She's filming that Tiger King biopic.

Which is the biggest reason nobody's leaving. They don't have to, as recently as 3-4 years ago if you wanted to do anything not related to SNL you had to get Lorne's blessing which he was very stingy with. It was just a cover to get rid of them but not having that blessing was the reason given for Killam and Pharoah's firing. Now after bending the rule to keep Davidson sober and alive everyone is pretty much allowed to skip a month of shows or so when they want to work on a project.

it reminds me of when you laugh at something a little kid does, they recognize it, then repeat to do it over and over at every opportunity or even when no opportunity. Even you get tired of reacting and they either learn to tell it to someone new, get new material, or move on. I bet the first time or two they did the "over-explain own jokes" thing it _was_ funny. But they've done it so much it just makes them seem to not have joke confidence, like, oh I said something maybe too weird, better couch it by having them acknowledge that!

it almost makes me miss madtv where they committed so hard to characters they couldn't stop from doping them a dozen times a season.

I hadn't seen this sketch and when Chevy came on screen in work clothes I was really expecting a meta joke or a premise wink but he was just like "live from new york at the end of a sketch, even though it wasn't a 15 minute long political softball game.

the david blaine stuff is the right way to do the thing SNL does wrong all the time where something weird happens and then the straightman has a reaction, because A) the straightmen here are funny and B) theyre being directly impacted by the strange events rather than just standing off to the side awkwardly and observing them.

Tonight in the That Week in SNL Twitch stream, Steve Martin and Kinky Friedman from October 23, 1976, and the George Carlin, Billy Preston, and Janis Ian series premiere from October 11, 1975. These are live with commercials copies, bootlegged from the NBC master tapes some 20 years ago, and digitized by me from my collection. You’ve seen the streaming/DVD versions, now see the full shows as they originally aired ~45 years ago. The first show is especially notable, as the frustrating omission of bumpers really upsets the original flow. The TWiSNL review of the Steve Martin episode will be up this weekend, wherever you get your podcasts. Be there!

I'm not sure! According to this (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2331890/) they were written by Mikey Day and Michael Naughton, maybe Day's written stuff doesn't make it to air that much?

More likely, SNL just wants the easiest, middle of the road stuff to make it on air.

Seems like one of the issues is there's increasingly nowhere for a cast member to "go" after SNL, assuming the criteria is "something bigger & better". Feels like Kate, Cicely, Melissa and others have been on the verge of leaving for several years now. Kate's movie career has been a non-starter so far in particular and big studio comedies are largely dead in general. Aidy starred in a critically successful show for 3 seasons but that's over and she's back in the cast again. Melissa at least has a solid stand-up and general artist career going. And those are the "stars" ... what is Mikey Day or Alex Moffat going to do if they leave?

The big issue there is there aren't moderately budgeted comedies that take a risk on a new comedic lead anymore. And if they do happen they just look for a bigger star that can say comedic lines.

this is kind of off topic, but I was trying to figure out the other day - what was the last mainstream comedy movie that was mainly a vehicle for jokes (as opposed to the 2.5 hour Judd Apatow model that's 20% riffs and 80% drama)?
Feel like it was Popstar, and before that, probably a Will Ferrel movie. It's almost disorienting going back to movies like Walk Hard that are wall to wall jokes.

Popstar is the last big comedy I tend to cite as mainstream and packed with jokes. It's almost an SNL film too, but really just by way of Lonely Island. I'm not actually sure what the last good Ferrell comedy was. The Other Guys? That's 2010. Likewise, it's funny seeing Bridesmaids get brought up and realizing that it's over a decade old now too.

edit: VV that's true, I've mentioned it to countless people who have never heard of it. I thought it was relatively mainstream because it came out in theaters and had a notable cast, but oof that box office
