Today I learned the AZ-1 was developed in the UK. In loving ESSEX of all places by a company called Hawtal Whiting (sadly no longer with us). When the company went into liquidation they sold the AZ-1 they had at the HQ to an ex-staffer for FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS. Also while in testing at Millbrook proving grounds the AZ-1 claimed the lap record for the outer track. And another test driver managed to roll one seventeen times on the hill route.

Not a sodding fridge.

That one is a really nasty implementation. It shouldn't be catching all these legitimate road users. They're not particularly bad drivers, they're victims of a poo poo bit of infra.

There are probably thousands of width restrictors like that in the UK and people get through them fine. There's something fucky about that top one - it's on a curve/the sightline isn't great/people are distracted by seeing the yellow bollards and they don't see the black tighter ones which are under mirror level/there's an elevated kerbstone next to it etc etc etc.

Wait is knowing the width of your car an expectation in England like truckers knowing their height? Or is it more of a "that looks too narrow and probably shouldn't risk it" expectation?

They're the same place, one lane just got a coat of paint due to it being a bus lane. There's a lane going the other direction too. You can clearly see in the video a van and a massive Audi SUV sail through with no issues. It's poo poo drivers who crash, nothing more. Here's the exact location on google maps and a quote from the briefing note about the restriction which came into being in 1980.

https://goo.gl/maps/MKzNv5gmQ8BmDsn69

https://watford.moderngov.co.uk/documents/s625/Appendix%20A-%20Woodmere%20Avenue.pdf

quote:

The seven foot width restriction on Woodmere Avenue was introduced in 1980 to prevent rat-running through the residential estate.

In order to enforce the width restriction, there have been posts, seven feet apart, at this site for many years. The width restriction is clearly signposted both on Woodmere Avenue and on adjoining roads. Provided your vehicle isn't wider than seven feet, you can access the road. To put this in perspective, seven foot is wider than the entrance to a normal garage. Several thousand cars use this road on a daily basis without any problems so we have no plans to make changes to the posts on Woodmere Avenue unless local councillors ask, through the Joint Member Panel, for alterations to be made.

Vehicles will not be damaged if they are less than 7 feet in width and being driven correctly by a competent driver. There are signs meeting national traffic regulations in place in advance of the restriction on all approaches notifying road users of the width restriction. It is up to each driver, with the knowledge of their vehicle width and the advanced signage, to make a conscious decision on whether or not they have the confidence to go through. There are alternative routes to avoid the restriction.

The latter, if you're a poo poo judge of where your car can fit then you're probably going to stack it. At least doing it here at low speeds means you're going to be hyper vigilant next time you think about squeezing through a gap :v:

The van illegally sailed through the bus lane in the middle.

If 10s of people per month are wrecking themselves on something that's not meant to catch them, it probably warrants a redesign.

As funny as the beep! of the driver braining themselves on the steering wheel is, this bit of road is not supposed to be hostile to anything other than HGVs.

I work near here and have driven through this many many times. In all honesty it’s a busy road and you’re easily distracted by the surroundings as there’s a lot going on.
The bollards are also black which doesn’t help the visibility, and also where they get so frequently hit the first one is often bent which skews perception. They’re also shorter than usual, the other width restrictions I know have higher posts that are painted yellow.
Oh and there’s a drop kerb just before you enter it which means if you’re out slightly you’ll mount the kerb easier and destroy your car.
Have a look on Google maps, it’s around 126 Woodmere Ave WD24 7LW.

You're correct on the van cheating, aye. Good spot.

10s of people per month loving up shows exactly how many poo poo drivers there are on the roads though. If you're not sure about it, maybe (like yourself) don't do it?! You're not forced to drive down the road and there's apparently plenty of signage about warning you.

I'd totally give this a shot in my old workvan :v:

Seems like someone in the council should replace the reflective marking on the top of the bollards, because especially on the left hand side, those things are going to be invisible in the dark, and the right side will be difficult with the big lit up yellow curb marker box.
Sometimes it bad drivers and bad road design, and that makes both of them worse.

At first I thought it was one of those rising bollards, but given it's not, I kind of agree they should maybe change something about it. Dunno what though.

There's a couple of "low" overpasses on the Auckland motorway system that get clipped by trucks every now and then, even though there is automated monitoring and warning systems, with big flashing signs that alert "overheight" vehicles. Thing is, even the lowest isn't actually that low.

quote:

At 4.57m the Penrose Bridge is one of the lowest bridges on the Auckland motorway network. Without a specific permit the maximum height for vehicles on the motorway is 4.25 metres – this means that anything that hits the Penrose Bridge is illegally overheight.

Penrose Bridge has been struck four times so far this year, with thirteen strikes in total across the Auckland motorway network.

To hit the lowest bridge, you're a foot overheight already and you ignored this, among other warnings:
