I bought Gloomhaven based on recommendations from other table top players, and I gotta say, if I didn't have someone at my table explaining how it worked, I would have quit after the first session. Even reading the book cover to cover doesn't prepare you for the first playthrough.

Are all of the classes implemented in the campaign, now?

Yeah, all the base classes are implemented. Re: tutorials: the first room in the first mission of the base Gloomhaven campaign is infamous for destroying groups, I 100% recommend you do some Guildmaster first. Jaws of the Lion did a MUCH better job onboarding players, and I hope those four classes get added at some point.

Only expansion (Diviner, Forgotten Circles campaign) and outside-of-box content (Envelope X) is missing. Envelope X is infamously messy as a puzzle and the reward is pretty eh, the expansion campaign was extremely divisive and the Diviner was the only interesting part about it IMO.

You've probably already played this; update speed is very slow however fairly recently it got some new ghosts, tools, UI/Sound/Graphics improvements, a new map, and a 3-second sprint added to it, so it's a great time to jump back in for a bit

AFAIK they're adding 2 more ghosts and another difficulty level for halloween.

Why chocolate? I’m not sure. It just kind of came to me. I think sometimes the best ideas just appear in a flash, instead of being cleverly thought out. That’s how I like to work, anyway. What’s important is the execution. And after 10 years of practice, I feel more confident than ever in being able to bring an idea to life.

Regardless, I think a lot of people like chocolate.

In Stardew Valley, the focus was more humble: living off the land, growing food, and connecting to the people and nature around you. However, with my next game, I wanted to explore more fantastical possibilities… experiences that take you beyond the ordinary. That’s where magical haunted ghost chocolate comes in.

Chocolate represents that which is delightful. The haunted castle represents the allure of the unknown. The ghosts represent the imprint of the past. All of these things are important. However, don’t think for a moment that, because this game features ghosts in a haunted castle, it is an evil or negative game. On the contrary, I intend for this game to be positive, uplifting and life-affirming. However, if Stardew Valley mostly channeled the energy of the sun, Haunted Chocolatier channels the energy of the moon. Both are vital.

More important than all that, I just want to make a fun game.

I don't like card games, but anymore when I browse through the various RPG or roguelike tags I get mostly card games and it'd be awesome to minus out the card tags.

One of the steam labs options lets you do this, i believe.

In 004.1 Search Query Expansion gives a little minus you can click to exclude tags.

You can do this in vanilla Steam.

Click on your name at the top right and go to Store Preferences.

Then, scroll down and there is a section "Tags to Exclude"

As for searching by tag, I don't really know an easy way. I usually just use the search, and click on the tag to see others with that tag if it's there.

Keep in mind that because Steam tags are all user-generated and people love to apply joke tags to games, ignoring by tag can sometimes lead to you not seeing games that you would otherwise like, or that you at least wouldn't ignore. Like, don't ignore the "Sexual Content" tag if porn games are what you want to get rid of because that will filter out games like Resident Evil and The Sims, and don't ignore "Souls-like" if you just don't like Souls-like games because that tag gets added to virtually everything as a joke.

Card Game or whatever is probably safe to ignore but that could also ignore games that feature a CCG minigame or whatever as a small part of the game like The Witcher or old Final Fantasies.

I thought it was pretty neat but the true ending is sort of ehhh and as a dialog-heavy loop game the dialog branching is mechanically kind of annoying for reasons sometimes which is a letdown. There are some other quibbles like having to hunt people down or wait for them to complete actions so you can talk to them.

Has an interesting horror sequence. Most of the writing is decent if sometimes fairly dry but some of it is completely eyerolling.

I wanted to love it but can't, it's definitely worth checking out though if you like narrative games.

The short of it is it's like outer wilds in that it's a time loop, but it keeps track of what you've done before, and everything you pick up comes with you.

Most of the puzzles aren't that hard, and you can beat it in an afternoon. If it's going to be on Game Pass, it's a great game to play for free,

Gloomhaven is a great game in theory but also a poster child for why you shouldn't hard-translate tabletop games to digital.

It's so incredibly slow and clunky to play, playing out a single round (one turn of each character in combat) takes an incredibly long time compared to other turn-based games. There's a lot of clicking to be done and decision making to do just to carry out basic actions like moving or attacking. Having to manually select two different cards for every character every single round before the round can begin really drags the pacing down when playing singleplayer. You have to spend time manually clicking two cards and going through this whole process to loot each item or gold pile off the ground, too.

It carries over a lot of tabletop design decisions that were made explicitly due to more exciting things being unwieldy/clunky/impossible in a tabletop environment - good for board game, bad for videogame. Things like all enemies of the same type (e.g. Bandit Archer) will all use the same action every turn. Meaning if you are fighting 6 bandit archers, then whatever card "bandit archer" chooses to use is used by all six bandit archers instead of each of them choosing an action individually. In a digital environment where no one has to actually manage those cards and make those decisions for each of the six bandit archers, this is just bad design that eliminates a lot of tactical potential, leads to extremely boring turns when you fight large amounts of the same enemy, and skews the learning curve for new players who now have to deal with things like 6 bandits suicidially charging them because they all chose the card that makes them suicidally charge. Oh yeah also they all get the same initiative because initiative is based on what card you chose, which means they all take those turns one after another.

It's probably more fun and a solid replacement for the actual board game (which I've never played) if you have a dedicated consistent group to play it with but approaching it as a singleplayer game the only thought on my mind was "why don't I play a game that's actually built with the capabilities of a videogame in mind"

I mean I am currently getting a ton of playtime in battletech with mods, which has absurdly slow turns - but Gloomhaven's pacing is so unbearable I refunded it because there's not even exciting stuff happening on those turns, all that time is just going in to moving and using basic attacks.

a storm is coming...

Gloomhaven... Doesn't even have basic attacks. I mean, I guess it sort of does, but actually using them is sort of a failure state or for HIGHLY specific situations. I think you're just trying to play the game as something it's not, and getting frustrated over it. Yes, it's just a translation of a boardgame to a digital format. People play certain boardgames like Gloomhaven solo too, and guess what? It's even SLOWER that way since you actually have to do the math yourself and double check targeting rules and all that. It's an excellent, excellent game so long as you're willing to engage with what it is, rather than comparing it to stuff like XCOM or whatever. You need all the mechanics to work the way they do, because the entire game is carefully balanced around it. All the enemies do the same action so that you can plan around what they're doing, for instance, and knowing that enemy action decks don't have repeats lets you know that if the enemies already did the suicide charge action and didn't get a deck refresh, they can't do it again so you can plan around it.

I love Gloomhaven, and had fun playing it with friends both on tabletop and on TTS (though not the Steam version yet at least), and I think that sounds totally reasonable. There are people who play and enjoy board games solo, but when I've tried I've mostly just felt like I should have been playing a video game instead, and haven't found any digital versions of board games that have really clicked for me either. Gloomhaven's the best version of what it is as a board game, which may mean it's still good enough as a video game for a lot of people, but preferring video games that were actually designed as video games makes sense to me.

All of that said, if Frosthaven ultimately gets a digital version, there's a really good chance I'll play the hell out of that since I don't have any intention of buying it as a physical game after dealing with set up and tear down. Already having experience with/affection for the core mechanics seems pretty likely to bridge the gap for me, but that's a pretty specific circumstance.

Curious what people think of this one, the visuals look loving awesome but any retro FPS has to hit the pacing right otherwise it all falls apart.

From what I can tell so far, Into The Pit is...pretty loving cool! I actually have mixed feelings about the color treatment for the visuals. On the plus side, it's certainly different, and it looks better in action than you might expect. That being said, FPS-on-LSD is going to be off-putting for some.

Visuals aside, the game feels really good to play. Movement is tight and responsive, as is shooting. The various powers you get seem well thought-out and the stacking and powering up works well and is satisfying. The jump is floatier than you might expect, but I like it quite a bit. Enemies are fun (except for the goddamn things that track you with an AOE :argh:), and the "one more run" factor seems really strong.

I haven't progressed much (only rescued a couple of villagers and unlocked the rune merchant), and I feel pretty underpowered when I get to a boss and get my rear end kicked, but that's par for the course with these kind of games. I look forward to unlocking options and figuring out overpowered builds. Complaints other than (maybe) the visuals? Well...the bell sound effects are loud and obnoxious, I wish there were more tucked-away secrets in the levels themselves for my playstyle (but I imagine they're trying to keep things quick), there are occasionally bits in the auto-generated levels that you can get stuck on, which can be a bit annoying, and enemies will occasionally attack through pokey-outy visual bits of the level that may or may not be solid, but are certainly not see-through.

I recommend it. I already feel like I got my money's worth, and I'm not very far at all.

It isn't new -- every single product key I've ever redeemed on Steam has thanked me for activating my subscription.

And as CharlieFoxtrot mentioned, you have never owned any of the software you've bought. You've purchased access to a contractual agreement where the copyright owner allows you to violate copyright laws in certain limited ways that lets you use a computer program.

Downloading a program off the internet violates copyright law. So does copying the program off the installation DVD to your hard disk. So does copying the program from your hard disk into system RAM, and copying data from system RAM to video RAM, and making copies of various bits and pieces in the processor's L1 and L2 caches, and the various caches in your GPU, and the cache RAM inside your hard disks. You are allowed to make these copies by the license agreement you have to agree to in order to run the program in the first place, and if you don't you're committing a crime.
