Not pictured: the legs that were on it, because they couldn’t handle the weight. We are going to try and figure something out there. Truly an infuriating turn of events because it looked much cooler with them.

She even put strip lights and a dimmer on it. I have decided to call it The Monolith.

Holy smokes that is cool and good looking. Fantastic job Bismack Billabongo's GF.

It was a kind of a weird backwoods antique/thrift store. The record selection was good but all the big name classic rock records were marked $10+ regardless of if they were trashed or not, and other stuff was all over the place. The Pere Ubu didn’t have a sticker so I was sure the guy was going to tell me it was more than I really wanted to spend. I casually said, hey this one looks like it doesn’t have a sticker on it, and he said, yeah that means it’s a buck. Sold!

A few years ago I was at Savers and they has 30% off sale. So the glass case up front had some Toto records marked at ten bucks. Then I went to the bins and found a first pressing of Zen Arcade, a UK first pressing of Sandinista, a They Might be Giants album, and a bunch of other poo poo. All NM condition. 70 cents each. Always buy records from squares.

That's the coolest setup I've ever seen, and a great reuse of an old stereo cabinet.

Recent record roundup:

Sextant is long-overdue for an audiophile reissue, but I'm impatient and this copy is VG-ish and cost me 12 bucks.

The Blakey record was also only 12 bucks although a bit more beat-up. I've been really digging the albums that feature Sabu on bongos, which adds an Afro-Caribbean flair. But this album... it's ok. It was released a year after Drum Suite (probably my all-time favorite Blakey album) and the same year as Moanin' so I guess I had high expectations for this album. I'm not sure if they did too much heroin for this session, or not enough.

You can't have cool poo poo if you have kids. It's one or the other. This is especially true in the case of records because they loving destroy everything and how easy would it be for kids to ruin a vinyl record. Every kid under 12 perpetually has sticky hands. What are they even doing that makes their hands sticky all the time and how are they not constantly irritated by that? If hell exists it's an eternity of children having access to my record collection.

Nah, you just teach em to wash their hands. My almost 5yo can put records on and she only touches the edges. She even knows how to use the turntable and marantz receiver.

Could be because I was taught how to operate a VCR and the family computer around the ages of 3 or 5. Hard to remember exactly when, whether it was before or after I started kindergarten, but some of my earliest memories are of watching Thomas the Tank Engine and Disney movie tapes that I had chosen and put on. Knew enough to rewind them after I was done too, and it was drilled into me to never use pause only the stop button if I had to stop the tape for a bit. Kids are smarter than we sometimes give them credit for.

I am jelly of all your great scores. I don't have the camera handy but I scored a bit too, got a Ronny Montrose in good condition, never seen it before.

That is a pretty good unit if you have little ones though come to think of it. Nice and stout, got nice solid doors and covers. That's a lot like the one we had when I was little, but it had an 8-track as well, IIRC. Shame the legs couldn't take it, I'm sure you can find some more stout ones on the cheap if you can use the internet.

I might be thinking of something else completely, but I think that was JC Penney’s house brand in the 70s, and maybe outside of their very top end models, are nothing special. I’m not sure who made them for JC Penney.

Well I may be trying one to play my 78s. I got one from Goodwill for $25, in really good condition, at least on the outside.
