well sure, it'll look pretty on any shelf!

quote:

We've spent the last few years playtesting and refining and playtesting again, and now we've got the most complete, easy to understand, terror-inducing rules on this planet (or any other). A quick summary of the changes between 0e and 1e:

* Combat and violence have been greatly clarified and simplified, replacing the old opposed roll system with a more intuitive "roll to hit then roll damage" system. Many edge cases have been smoothed out, and the whole thing overall is much better.

* Health has now moved to a Wounds system, which is faster, more visceral, and much more evocative. Taking damage isn't just about losing abstract points, it's about suffering specific injuries that tell a story and prioritize quick thinking and difficult choices (more about this in The Books section below).

* Armor is no longer a save, but rather destructible Armor Points. Ignore any damage less than your AP, but if you take more damage than your AP, your armor is destroyed. Time to raid the nearby crew-lockers...

* We've removed levels all together, and characters start off a little stronger and can increase their Saves through Shore Leave, spending time training, resting, and gaining new skills.

* All the classes have been rebalanced and skill selection has become much more specialized. If you're the person who is good at First Aid, you kick rear end at it.

* The Stress & Panic system has been rebalanced (no more Heart Attacks after taking a couple points of Stress... those were the days). Additionally, we've added the brand new d20 Panic Die. This is a die you only roll when making Panic Checks, which speeds things up greatly and makes Panic Checks a lot easier for new players to understand.

* We removed a lot of weird edge cases to the rules and streamlined how combat and violent encounters work, removing a ton of rolls and vestigial nonsense.

* A lot of quality-of-life changes have been made to the text, mostly in how it's explained and presented, to make it easier to understand for beginners.

Overall, we think it is absolutely the best version of Mothership to date, and if you want to read more about the awesome changes we've made, check out the section on the Books below.

from the point of view of a gm it was non-functional. there were basically no guidelines on how to build anything when it came out. you could play it, and there were pre-written adventures, but designing your own stuff required you to just guess and make up the numbers yourself

the system is also very punishing and hews to classic osr design where you're supposed to touch the dice as little as possible. success chances are hilariously low. basically its the worst of playing mother-may-i with the gm so they don't make you roll and likely fail, which will in turn likely send you and your team into a doom spiral.

Next, and what I'm sure you're all most excited about: we've finally put together a Warden's Operations Manual. This little toybox can take you from newbie Warden to veteran in 60 pages. With the WOM in your arsenal, you'll be able to handle common problems like:

* How do I prep for a session? How do I know when I'm done prepping?
* How do I run a horror game? How do I maintain tension?
* What about campaigns? How do I even begin to structure and run one?

Each of these sections takes a nuts-and-bolts, easy to master, step-by-step approach to teaching new Wardens how to run Mothership®.

Confession time: I am not a great gamemaster. So all of the tips in this book have been hard won over many years of frustration, wondering why my campaigns weren't working, or were always stalling out. This book is the product of those hard games!

also there's a monster manual

Yeah since its initial release Mothership has basically just been a player's handbook and adventure modules. Any third-party stuff that people have created for it has basically been created whole-cloth.

Yeah legit the new Free League Alien game was basically what Mothership's mechanics wanted so you could just use that in the Mothership "setting" as it is.

It sounds like they've cut some content of the Japanese version, including stuff like "Here's some tokens, invent your own rules for them."

One of the key problems in the analysis of this puzzling book is to be able to differentiate a real language from meaningless writing.
https://twitter.com/jacobin/status/1455587770169053184

quote:

Class War is the new two-player asymmetric strategy game from the team behind Jacobin, the largest socialist magazine in the United States.

In Class War, you are a collective entity: a social class — either the Capitalists or the Workers. You’ll fight for social dominance in an unstable constitutional democracy. Will the Capitalists crush this rising wave of popular discontent and entrench their position as masters of society? Or will the Workers triumph over the power of money to make society more equal and just?

Don’t let the political theme fool you — Class War leaves all moralizing at the door. The gameplay is so addictive that even your libertarian uncle won’t be able to resist the world-historic struggle unfolding in the deck of cards before him. And if he looks closer, he just might see, for the very first time, what a socialist perspective on our society’s class antagonisms really looks like.

it looks like there are some mechanical revisions to the modules for the new rules, with a pamphlet conversion guide if you don't want to rebuy them (with dev commentary?) which I think will be free in pdf?

you just need the core set and the conversion pamphlet, I think.

I didn't see it in the wall of text, but let's say I was *willing* to plunk down the extra cash for the deluxe set and rebuy those modules just a year or so after receiving them... are they revised to incorporate the 1e rules? It's just so weird how little they address prior customers!

The Mothership Deluxe Set is the fastest way to complete your collection. This Kickstarter exclusive limited edition has all the core books as well as all our official modules, each of which will be updated to be fully compatible with 1e.

They've been changing things a lot, it wasn't the clearest kickstarter at launch.

Months without an update, some super snarky replies when people complained. At some point a backer met them at a convention and started putting updates from them in the comments, since they wouldn't do it themselves.

Two months between updates isn't that unreasonable right now, and as far as snarkiness, maybe I need to read farther back in the comments, but I'm really not seeing that anywhere.

Modi hasn't had the best of luck with it's Bethesda licenses. The deluxe neoprene mat to replace the poster in the Wasteland Warfare starter was folded like a bedsheet to fit it in a box, which meant most of them were stretched or torn immediately out of the box. Then there was their only attempt at a big set piece, a build-it-yourself gas station which was MSRP'd at ~$110 and made entirely of pressed cardboard, which had warping issues in some climates. And they went from having cards for all minis in the starter to selling a year's worth of expansion's cards in a deck to making all cards print-and-play.

They're very serious about making their games have the feel of actually playing a Bethesda game.

I just read all the addon descriptions, this isn't a pack of upgraded miniatures, this is to upgrade the base game and replace the monster tokens with miniatures. So, even if you pledge for the "All Gameplay" tier, you'd have to add on this miniature upgrade box to have more than just the player characters be mini's. You don't even get a Dragon mini in the base game, in SKYRIM.

See, that sounds a lot better to me. I was like "wait, I thought there were only a few minis in the box, now you're telling me that you get crappy ones and have to pay to "upgrade" them?"

Selling the minis in a separate box should be the default, if you ask me. But yes, they do look bad in this case.

I’ve played it a few times- it’s silly fun smashing kaiju into buildings. Is it worth the expensive buy in with the sets and miniatures out now? Probably not. Is it worth it for the price of all the minis and base game stuff in the Kickstarter? Yep definitely

The only thing I’m not sure of is the quality of the miniatures in the Kickstarter- they can’t be the same quality as the current ones at that price. If they were lovely board game plastic minis I wouldn’t be happy, but I’m a tabletop miniature player so I may be biased.
