The keyboard alone would drive me to wanting to replace it, but you might also want to take into consideration its declining value and lack of future support (probably a long way off from no support but there are some features not available for Intel Macs already). I’d say if you’re in a position where an M1 or M1 Pro is an option, there’s no harm in considering it. Apple’s trade in process makes it pretty painless too.

This is all barring any reason you would want an Intel Mac, like say Bootcamp.

I got 16gb, but kind of regret it.
With a single photo session w/ Lightroom classic and photoshop open, the memory is pegged and memory pressure is yellow. It still feels relatively fast probably just because the ssd is so fast

Probably still usable for a couple years until the M2 comes out and I trade in, but I would not get a higher Mpx camera in the meantime.

I ordered 32gb.

I originally bought into the "ram doesn't matter" thing when the M1 came out and ordered an 8GB M1 Air, which turned out to be unusable with my normal workflow. I replaced it with a 16GB Air that still frequently gets into high memory pressure / sluggish / skippy, but it'll probably be fine for the majority of people.

Normal stuff open

Spotify

node serving a decent size angular application
GUI Git client

Do you do spreadsheets or "Spreadsheets" which is the contents of a production database in a .XLSB?

Get a M1 air and you have 14 days to return it and upgrade to a 14" Pro.

Checked memory usage of Lightroom/PS themselves? Wondering if you might be running into this issue:

32GB/1TB M1 Max, which is out for delivery today, finally!

I am not a pro user by an means, except I have poo poo loads of tabs in many windows open at a time driving 3-4 monitors. By not a pro, meaning I don't do video, audio, or coding that these things are designed for. But I went for the whole hog because I had an extremely good year this year, expect it to be a ten-year laptop, and got a little too excited when I ordered.

Went with the base everything 14" model. 16gb is more than enough and honestly I don't even use the Pro for what it's made for, I just like how it looks over the Air so I went for it.

2TB if you plan to stay 12.0.1 and run firefox

Joking aside, I got 16 because it feels like it satisfies my needs and I'm not a super power user. Biggest constant drain on memory according to Activity Monitor is and always has been my propensity to leave 400 tabs open in Safari. Everything else is a distant second :q:

If it’s an Apple trade-in then the 14-day window starts when you receive the new laptop. You’ll be fine.

AFAIK there's an extended holiday return policy for items received from the Apple online store after Nov 1 that goes into the first week of January. IDK if this applies to instore or Apple products purchased from 3rd parties, but yeah

It is very bizarre to me that I have to do this to have a decent experience working on my 1440p monitor. I guess that’s the apple trade off, because my new 14” is so nice otherwise.

Tbf I think all of Apples material says “14 days when you receive your trade in kit” but I’ve had it confirmed multiple times that if you’re doing it the same time as a purchase than the clock starts ticking when your new gear comes in.

I’ve done probably 7 trade-ins this year and two of them were past the 14 day period when I got my new stuff in and it was never an issue.

It's here, and it's glorious. It just feels like such a substantial laptop with excellent design. I never liked the super thin ones. I didn't even realize there was a notch until I remembered to look for it.

Need to take some time to get it set up.

Haven't used macOS in a long time. Any suggestions for a transitioning Windows user? First adjustments seem to be around window management. The snapping around that I can do in Windows (I'm a keyboard warrior from the early 90s) so far is the only thing I'm struggling with.

The rest is just going to be fun exploration.

Same here, except for the notch. I notice it and I don't like it, but it's not (so far) anywhere close to a dealbreaker, given how good everything else is.

(Guess I forgot to hit the post button before I left, but anyway) If you want to customize the trackpad actions (among way too many other options), BetterTouchTool has all the snapping stuff included iirc. But I guess you probably discovered that by now.

I use Moom myself, has crapload of layout and configuration options, and both keyboard and mouse ways to do stuff.
