Edit - she would also give me coke mixed with milk as a toddler. It was very stupid.

I don't think there's an easy solution, or at least no easy solution that wouldn't trigger insanely aggressive reactions from conservative Americans for trying to give the kids of poor people widespread access to free food.

Its less the hours and more that jobs that involve an active lifestyle have disappeared, most jobs are either just standing or sitting in front of a computer for long periods. Theres also a wide variety of engrossing entertainment options that involve basically zero movement. In the 70s your sedentary hobby options were watching 5-10 options of mostly lovely tv, reading books, or doing like, crafts. Even in the 80's most video games were poo poo. Cable wasn't always available, and even where it was, it was still incredibly limited compared to the internet.

Also, my pet favorite crazy theory about rising obesity is that the ubiquity of smoking meant that basically everyone prior to the 90s was on a moderate daily nicotine (stimulant, appetite suppressant) dose, whether they touched a cigarette or not.

Your reaction was basically mine. I stumbled on a C-SPAM post with links to peer reviewed articles that showed the obesity isn't evenly distributed, and in fact correlates inversely with altitude, and it also affects zoo animals. The evidence is very strong, but it's so wacky that you sound like a cultist if you try to talk about it without a bibliography in your back pocket. The world is so hosed, but at least I have instant access to drawings of women loving anthropomorphic Soviet aircraft.

I skimmed this page and then keyword searched and I don't see anything linking endocrine disruptors to obesity.

Don't get me wrong, the article is alarming and the effects of these chemicals needs to be more widely known, but I'm not seeing the link to obesity you were talking about.

The term they use is "fat fucks". It seems a little biased tbh

e: for the record that's a joke about researchers using the term in a paper not about actual fat people who are fine

My former town's water was pumped from the bottom of an active mine. To the west was a landfill. To the northeast was a landfill that's so contaminated and leaky that it's a Superfund site, where they allowed all of the toxic waste, despite the law. It's already known that the landfill leaks into the water supply. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeway_Sanitary_Landfill

The city was posturing that they'd stop issuing blasting permits to the mine. The mine was like "lol, we'll shut down and turn off your water pumps. Good luck replacing that 10 million gallons a day." The permits were issued. Failure to pump that water to the town's residents would spread the pollution further. See: the wiki link above.
