Mellow Seas posted:Kraftwerk made a great post about this over the weekend which I'll quote in full here: I missed that one. Thank you! There was someone (might have been kratfwerk again) who posted about working in chemical supply and how the issues with logistics were a longtime coming and about some of the current issues they are facing. They also talked about the GOP capitalizing on it. Interestingly, (and I realize I'm preaching to the choir in this thread), the US government has propped up the logistics and other systems to create such variety and plenty for american consumers but most importantly help businesses thrive. It's not corporate socialism but it ain't laissez faire capitalism. Massive amounts of corporate welfare in addition to support. Yet it routinely reaches breaking points and whoever is in charge can't deal with it except through providing more welfare to companies, which in turn makes things progressively worse.

International Space Station evacuated. The debris from the weapon test will likely last "years" and there is no way to track the long-term trajectory of all of the pieces. As of now, they have confirmed ~1,500 pieces in orbit. quote:"The debris created by Russia's (test) will continue to pose a threat to activities in outer space for years to come, putting satellites and space missions at risk, as well as forcing more collision avoidance maneuvers," he said. https://twitter.com/18SPCS/status/1460388384078139399 https://twitter.com/CBSNews/status/1460387353768382465 "Actually, the treaty only prevents WMDs from being positioned in space, but we could also launch nukes into low orbit if we wanted" is not a super reassuring statement from Russia. quote:The term "weapons of mass destruction" is not defined, but it is commonly understood to include nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. The treaty, however, does not prohibit the launching of ballistic missiles, which could be armed with WMD warheads, through space. VitalSigns posted:What are some of these extreme left takes There's a lot of miss-use on "toxic masculinity" with just straight "masculinity". Or, if a guy gets into a disagreement with a woman about an issue that the guy actually knows a fair amount about, its deemed "mansplaining". of course we all can look at twitter and see plenty of "mansplaining" examples. in day to day life, I'm sure women experience it all the time. That's not what I'm talking about. An example would be the Australian middle school/high school? where the male students had to turn and apologize for "all men who have caused sexual assault" to their female counterparts. And we're talking about little kids here. The "gently caress all guys, you're all complicite" vibes versus the, "here's systemic problems and how do we best as a culture address them, these are things that we as civilized people should not accept any longer." is what I'm talking about. The group that have those "extreme left takes" aren't even extreme left. They don't want to have limited air travel because it's bad for the environment, or UBI if it effects their taxes. It's controlling left usually, and it's usually college educated white women trying to run things. they're the one to weaponize language to make them out to be the heroes (or preferably) victims, almost always. Basically, it's stuff in the "white fragility" mode of poo poo, versus actual addressing things in a none grifter manner. Or, to put it another way, take the tv show Wandavision. If you think the ending of that show was "girl boss" and not "hugely problematic," then it's the "you're not actually standing for anything progressive, you just want more power group". And honestly? I'm fine with that too, just be honest about it.

So since the deadline for a vote on the BBBA has passed, what's the next step? Will any form of it be passed by the House before the end of the year? Much less the Senate. I don't see how it's not completely dead (let's be honest, it is) if they wait until 2022.

Nah; it'll be passed this year bc of the SALT deduction restoration for richies + the subsidies to private health insurers. An important & enduring feature of crisis capitalism is waiting till the last possible moment of the year before Congress's 28th paid break of the year, then midnight passage of whichever controversial bills are pending.

Guys Russia position regarding ICBMs isn't new, and it is our position as well. We said we wouldn't put nukes in orbit. That's very different than temporarily putting them on a sub orbital flight. We've done this, China has done this, it's not new. It is also nowhere near anything that would cause Kessler syndrome. That's going to take Elon Musk levels of stupid. In reality this is a short term risk to current space efforts, and things go back to normal in a few months after all the debris is tracked. There really should be international agreement against this behavior and sanctions, but good luck when the US reserves the right to do the same.

It's not the first time a satellite's been blown up in LEO during the ISS's lifetime, so it's probably not as bad as it sounds. If the risk was judged to be all that high, the station personnel likely would have been returned to Earth. It's not like the reentry vehicles they're sheltering in are any more resistant to debris impacts.

The group behind that ballot initiative (Yes 4 Minneapolis) couldn't have cared less about connecting with local people who are most impacted by policing. They seemed to have cared a lot more about their national image. And they even managed to raise quite a bit more money than the main opposing group (All of Minneapolis). Granted, this ballot question wouldn't have actually done much to change MPD/policing anyways, but that's a different story.
