Okay well now this thread has got me interested in Pathologic 2. It looks like there's only part 1 out of 3 released or something? Should I wait for the other two? Even better, is there a Pathologic thread? E: Yeah there is

I'm sure that thread quickly says as much but P2 is absolutely a complete, standalone game. At some point in the indefinite future 2 more might come out, if we're lucky

Should I wait for the other two? there's also this thread, not sure why there's two lol just to reiterate, for anyone interested: pathologic 2 is essentially a remake of pathologic 1 (which came out in 2005, was nearly unplayable even by 2005 standards and is not for the faint of heart). pathologic 1 had three protagonists, with one campaign for each. pathologic 2 currently has only one of these protagonists available, with plans to implement the other two at some point in the future (there's a short dlc available from another protagonist's point of view though). however, that single campaign is still 30+ hours of gameplay, and it's extremely good (if not strictly speaking "fun" lol)

It has a pretty good BBC miniseries adaptation too. The Ruin of Angels does the weird multiple city thing much better and it actually makes salient points about the nature of community.

i like tc&tc plenty, and I think miéville did a pretty decent job of integrating political themes into the narrative (unsubtle as it might be), but it still suffers the same problems most of his books share: he doesn't really know how to write natural characters and dialogue. i unironically think his dissertation on a marxist theory of international law is the best thing he's done

I consider creating an alternate city which is what you really intend to talk about is for cowards. Just make the hosed up lovely one your main setting and work from there like actual insane sci-fi writers have been doing for like 100 years

This is the right thread: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3889956&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1 It's a great game but I'd read up on it. It's a lot different than Disco Elysium. It's a brutally difficult plague survival sim with a great story and setting. Expect to death spiral and have to start over with lessons learned. If you decide you're in buy it, parts 2 and 3 probably aren't coming. vaginite fucked around with this message at 07:53 on Nov 19, 2021 |

Anyway, highly recommend anyone who hasn't to play (not try, not watch, play) Pathologic 2, it's a fantastic game and it and Disco Elysium does sort of "fit together" as others have noted. However, as also noted, do NOT expect it to play in anyway the same as Disco Elysium, it's a very different game and the stress, tedium and grind of its difficulty is a big part of the story, don't look for a way to just make it easy and stroll through it. Opinions are obviously very subjective but I'd probably rate Pathologic 2 above Disco Elysium, even though it's much more flawed than Disco Elysium is, it does alot with the medium of being a video game and the gameplay mechanics to tell its story and allow players to experience it in their way. Not to say Disco Elysium doesn't do alot of that obviously, but Disco Elysium has much simpler aspirations as regards its actual gameplay, and is much more tight and accessible as a result. Yeah it’s hard to describe pathologic 2 to someone who hasn’t played it. It’s extremely stressful and immersive. They added difficulty sliders after I played due to complaints and in an attempt to boost sales, but as noted here the difficulty is a big piece of the puzzle, and this game loses a lot more than others do by making it easier.

I like Fallen London quite a bit, if that qualifies. Or my own mystery city, Boston from Stolen Suns, but there's only a half dozen people in the world that have been exposed to that one. Making mystery cities is fun.

Then I read everything else by that author. If you're in the mood for an extremely weird, no handholding, interestingly setup exploration of anarcho-socialism in a very unfamiliar world check out the Commonweal series by Graydon Saunders. The first book has black company vibes, the second and third are.....look if you like them you'll like them but "what if hogwarts was 5 people learning civil engineering" it's really hard to describe. I really like them and I think if you heavily vibe with disco elysium there's a good chance you'd dig 'em.

Going to ask this here if that’s ok since the pathologic 2 thread is huge and old. I see horror is listed with its genres, is it just the atmosphere or are we talking jumpscares or creature stalking stuff or what? I know nothing about the game and from what I understand if I’m interested I shouldn’t look up too much about it anyway

The game has horror elements for sure. Obviously the atmosphere and tone are pretty spooky. But in terms of actual gameplay, the most horror game like things basically involve you being chased by enemies who are stronger than you at night or being overwhelmed in close quarters. Since the moment to moment is basically an open world survival game with a lot of freedom these are more dynamic non-scripted situations you're not really forced into and can often mitigate with your choices, ie not engaging with the risk/reward of dealing with the spooky places

yeah the horror bits are almost all to do with the general mood and the atmosphere. there aren't any jump scares that i can remember - not pre-planned by the devs at least (some enemies may kinda sneak up on you if you're not careful though, which may lead to a jump scare-like experience)
|
# ? Nov 19, 2021 19:13 |

No jump scares in particular besides ones that come out of systemic interaction, but it might be worth saying there's a decent amount of blood n' guts. You play a surgeon and while none of it is graphic you're gonna be running around with organs in your inventory at some point. Pathologic 2 is excellent, fwiw. Atmospheric and tense with actual gameplay nothing like DE but they both stand out in my mind as games that I'll never forget playing. Post in the thread there too! That it's inactive currently doesn't mean it shouldn't be bumped.

The game can get pretty scary/unsettling but I don't remember a single jump scare. The House of Death was especially freaky, to me. Also the fact that you can't save everyone no matter how hard you try is really unsettling.

Also a note on the music of the game, it's pretty excellent. Warning, there could be mild spoilers in the comments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meEoZctCMBo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utD_uco2gck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2PKLEIPN9U (actually a remix of a track from the first game's soundtrack) Though in 2 the truly excellent tracks mostly play at scripted sequences (the scene during which the second track plays is truly enthralling IMO). 1's soundtrack was pretty different and probably edges out a win overall. Mandalore Gaming described it pretty well by calling it the Half Life soundtrack as arranged by Genghis Khan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQDRjbxXUmc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao91HN1dZWk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A11gzu3M18s e: Also while I generally endorse avoiding spoilers for this game, I actually went into it having many plot points spoiled and it still 100% drew me in, to the point where it kind of got to me and I'd at the same time dread playing the game but not playing it I was thinking about the game. What happens in the game isn't really as important as what you feel playing it IMO. Hbomberguy (I think) said in his video on the games that the game has been criticized by some for being pretentious but the thing is that being pretentious is about affecting a greater importance for something than it deserves, but that's not really true because the game definitely is trying to say things, important things and actually does it an emotionally resonant, even artful way. you ever tried to catch a bus and arrive at the stop just as it’s pulling away, and you run after it until your breath is ragged in your throat, senselessly believing you can keep up with it until the next stop, until your legs give out and you just watch it drive further and further away pathologic 2 makes you feel like that all the time

I think it's good that they added it because it makes the game accessible to people for whom the game is prohibitively difficult, like those with disabilities, but I would also really recommend against turning it down unless you really can't play it. Remember that things should go wrong and you should be running out of time all the time except maybe the first day.

I've wanted to try Pathologic 2, but I don't like survival games at all, and in theory I don't like games that are that oppressive feeling, especially an apparently super difficult survival game. I might give it a whirl if it's cheap enough, just because so many people love it, like it's up there with this game and Outer Wilds as far as the near ubiquitous claims that it's one of the best games ever amongst the people who've actually played through it, so I figure I might as well see why that is. Also, it might be worth mentioning that people in the PS4 thread have mentioned how awful the PS4 port is, because it was apparently outsourced and for whatever reason they didn't really have much say or choice in the matter and can't really fix it. I saw a Youtube video as well that also said as much and showed off a bunch of apparently very common glitches that look really annoying and not something you'd want to deal with in a game like that. Maybe it's changed recently, but last I heard it was a really lovely port.

I thought Outer Wilds was awesome but I never finished it and I’m ashamed to admit that to the actual OW thread. I got kinda far? Then tried to pick it up again and can’t remember all the details. Then I read some spoilers to try and catch back up to where I am. Some of the spoilers seemed like I never ever would have figured them out on my own either (like the Super Metroid bomb tunnel) which is a bummer.

I don’t know, I’m a moron and I figured it out (well, aside from like the first step in the final piece of the puzzle, which I had the right idea about, and even attempted it in nearly the right way, but failed.. but the hints for that were so notoriously confusing they patched in more direct hints and illustrations, then patched it again with even more on the nose clues, including dialogue about how the Nomai were even confused about it in the way that most players were, and explained it through that dialogue on top of the other more clear hints). How much did you figure out before you stopped playing? I highly recommend the expansion though, it’s basically a standalone game in a completely separate area that tied into the main game in a genius way. But I might wait a little longer, because from what Alex Beachum has been tweeting and asking people, it seems they’re doing the same sort of updates to the DLC, but they already did one pretty large update so it might even be easier than it was at launch when I beat it. But it stumped me for quite a bit longer than any of the main game, but I have a feeling that’s got more to do with the fact that I was pretty frightened by the ‘horror’ sections, which are actually explicitly spooky, pitch dark areas with scary sound effects and whatnot (so much so that there’s an option to ‘reduce frights’ which I recommend turning in regardless as it doesn’t really reduce frights so much as it makes said parts less frustrating and also tones down the dramatic scary sound effects). But yeah it’s a different type of ‘scary’ than the main game, which has some spooky bits like dark bramble, but even I didn’t really have an issue with that aside from maybe the first time I visited it, and im terrified of underwater levels, even in cartoony games. But yeah, it’s well worth the $15, for what might as well be a sort of stand alone mini sequel.
