That son of a bitch is in this episode?

Man its so easy to spot all these fascist fucks when they all continue to wear their uniforms. If only there could be a spy or someone with some moral fiber...

Oh yeah this desert town just has massive palm trees covering MULTIPLE mobile suits, of course nobody ever spotted them...

Gundams, defeated by sand. Everyone with the casino dealer visors. Puru dooms the squad to a painful, slow death. She still sucks.

What luck that Judau would drive EXACTLY over these ambushers. GUNDAM MARTIAL ARTS! GUNDAM MARTIAL ARTS!

Three mobile suits on the mega rider looks goofy as hell.

Judau... you know you can fly higher.... Awww dang the one maybe not quite as bad fascist died to the fire of his fascist buds.

You know... for given this episode's, its surprising that he accomplished absolutely nothing.

I've been on a bit of a Gundam kick recently because I got into gunpla, so I watched Char's Counter-attack, The Origin and Unicorn (since both are available on Netflix), having watched the original MSG + a few other UC shows like ten years ago.

I quite liked CCA up until the last 10 minutes, which I just found really confusing and pretty unsatisfying, although a second watch helped a lot. Really liked the characters, or at least found them interesting (except maybe Hathaway blowing away Chan, which felt a little silly to me). Loved the acting and the little character moments, like when that one pilot tells Astonaige she loves him.

The Origin was pretty good, despite feeling a bit too fan-service-y at times. My biggest problems with it were:

1) Wait, this Char guy just looks identical to Casval? And that's how he gets the name? Okay
2) The ending feels sudden and a little anti-climactic since it just slams into the beginning of MSG. Can't really hate on them for this, but it was jarring.
3) It's really focused on the Zabis, which makes sense since they kick off the OYW, but I found it kind of odd just how sympathetic it makes Dozle and Garma, especially the former since they show him as being the one who carries out the gassing and dropping of that colony. Thought it was odd how even Ramba's objection is played for laughs with Dozle electrocuting himself.

Unicorn though... woof. The second half of that show suuucked. I don't love the Newtype stuff in any Gundam but usually find it tolerable so if I knew going in that the ending would involve so much ridiculous bullshit I wouldn't have even bothered. Even ignoring the new type stuff, I found the fan service even more annoying and Full Frontal felt like a huge waste of time. And also the reveal of the box with the 120+ year old man coming out of the ground was both silly and completely underwhelming. I also didn't love any of the characters or the acting the same way I did with CCA -- in general both Origin and Unicorn had too much shouting and the weird noises people make when they're nervous or scared or whatever that I find pretty annoying in anime in general (this is with Subs).

Sorry if that comes off as a rant! I am wondering what I should watch next -- I've never seen Zeta Gundam, but after Unicorn I'm afraid my tolerance for bullshit space magic might be at an all time low... not sure how much is present in that show.

Judau almost flies into a sand dune, a rather spectacular feat. Then he does so while hunting camels.

"Welp just going to abandon my core fighter to ride a camel" Puru dooms the group by wasting water.

Alright so this lady is pretty weird, turns out she's an enemy and also talks to her helmet.

Village elder makes a good point, just loving fly away, you dorks.

Gundams, defeated by the power of SAND STORM!!!! And the threat of quicksand is quickly dispelled by someone able to just drag them out.

Alright so this lady needs to kill others simply to impress a village of people that her fascist ex-husband was worth a drat.

I don't know about social media, but I feel like Amuro, Judau, Chan, Garrod, Kid Salsamil and a few others would probably have some cool mecha related YouTube channels in a universe where mecha was real, that Master Asia would probably have a great channel beating up various martials arts folks before explaining what they did wrong in a calmer AG where he's not trying to overthrow humanity, Keith would probably have a really interesting low key baking channel in CC while Fran has a cool blog with all her photos etc.

I started watching Turn A Gundam and am totally enchanted by it. Are any of the other series similar? (I've seen the original MSG, 8th MS Team, War in the Pocket, and G Gundam)

in particular I really like the character-driven narrative, the mysterious setting, and the unique scenario. I really like the political scenario where the leaders don't want a war to break out, but their militaries are itching to start one, and Loran/Kihel/Dianna have to play both sides to try to keep the powers in balance so diplomacy can continue. It feels really unique.

It's not Gundam, but if you want something like this, watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes. There's a remake series currently going but the original is still better.

This is the prequel movie, My Conquest Is A Sea of Stars, which is a perfect spot to get in.

Not really a fan of it personally, though that's at least partially just because I don't like it's color palette. I don't think any of it's changes improve the old design though, which is the main problem. That aside, I find it odd it'd be named Titania. One of Scirocco's MSV designs is called the Titania, so I wouldn't have thought they'd use that name for another UC unit.

I would preface this by saying that it tackles things differently that Turn A, mostly in it's pacing. Turn A luxuriates in it's pacing, and Tomino originally hoped for a roughly 100 episode, two year show. Which makes sense when you consider how long he spent exploring Ameria and Earth in general, compared to how little time is spent exploring the Moon and wrapping up the plot in the second half. On the other hand, Tomino specifically asked Sunrise to make G-Reco a 26 episode show because he no longer felt up to working on a one year show continuously at his age and it shows in the pacing. G-Reco has a lot of really interesting and fun looking locations and technology, but never actually stops to explore any of it. So how much Cephas will enjoy G-Reco compared to Turn A probably hinges largely on how they feel about the pacing in Turn A.

Gundam Thread 5: Have you watched Legend of Galactic Heroes?

I have a groupwatch of it planned with some friends, so that we can all finally get off that hump of watching a dozen episodes before getting burned out. I'll have to check out G Reco just on the basis of its wikipedia article:

quote:

The reaction to the series was mixed. Toshio Okada, a co-founder and former president of Gainax, has voiced concerns regarding the show's comprehensibility. He stated that "Ordinary people watch this and don't know what's happening," and "It's fine to make it for today's kids, but who does he think kids today are? Who does he think the kids that watch Yo-kai Watch are?"[19] Lauren Orsini of Anime News Network criticized it in her review of the Gundam series as a whole. Stating "The storytelling is so confusing, it may take the entire series for you to figure out what's going on." She recommended against watching it entirely.[20] Meanwhile, Japanese social critic and editor-in-chief of the PLANETS magazine, Uno Tsunehiro, gave it a highly positive critical response, stating that "[It is] in my humble opinion, this disorientation is somewhat intended... What we see here may be an intense message that goes against the times." He went on to state that it reflects the dilemmas that humanity faced in the 20th century, and how technology and digital age culture has made us lose our ability to perceive and understand these detached realities.[21] Likewise, writer Gen Urobuchi wrote a highly positive critical response to it, stating "If there are infinite possibilities in writing, is it possible to write a story about the potential danger of stories? A story that renounces stories? Yes, it is. Reconguista of G did it", and "When I saw the end credits I was just moved, and exclaimed " they did it!". I had been worried about the limits of storytelling and was just thankful for this slap from a veteran creator to me. Reconguista of G made me genki."

I think covid killed the production's momentum. Looking at Wikipedia, it says the next three movies will air from March to May next year. I don't care for the movie format. The second season was movies too and instead of immediately bringing them here they took a while and then broke them up into weekly episodes. They'll probably do that for these movies too. Figures that in the age of next day international anime releases, one of the few ones I want to watch still takes a while to come Stateside.

It's definitely worth checking out to see what you think, but for better or worse I think some of the people in that quote are over-exaggerating for effect. Tomino's shows have always been divisive and full of bits where exposition or development is relegated to minor exchanges it's entirely possible to miss and this isn't really something that just started with G-Reco. It's more noticable with G-Reco due to the shorter runtime, since the plot is a bit more compressed than usual and so there's more stuff glossed over quickly than there sometimes is, but Overman King Gainer had the same runtime and the same problem with it's plot being very compressed, and even going back to the Gundam 0079 you can find scenes of exposition being glossed over quickly such that lots of people miss it. I'd wager it's probably true in older shows like Zambot 3 too, though I haven't seen them to verify. On the other hand, Urobuchi's comments on how G-Reco is a story about the danger of stories seems like he's blowing things out of proportion too. I can see where he's coming from, but I'd also say that what he's talking about is a minor element of the overall show and that even that one element is less "the danger of stories" and more "the danger of ignoring reality in favor of what you tell yourself about the world". Which a lot of stories have talked about, really.

G-Reco is fantastic, and the mixed response is entirely due to the fact that the show expects you to pay attention and think a little bit. Important world building is done in throwaway dialogue, a lot if characterization is done through subtle stuff like body language or oddly emotional reactions, and characters will sometimes act out of unspoken motivations. All of this happening in a fundamentally different world from our own where characters don't have the same preconceived notions that we do.

Some people don't like that and prefer anime where characters will always openly state their motivations at every turn while unleashing an ultimate attack, and that's fine.

Except that G-Reco also has some of the clunkiest exposition I've ever seen. The show alternates between spending episode after episode with some crucial setting element unexplained and just vomiting out speeches about some plot point that could be (or in some cases, already were) explained more subtlety through character interactions.

Comparing to Turn A, there you both had exposition when you needed it, and had characters who knew the rough shape of things able to give information on most of the plot when it was needed. Loran and Diana both were mostly reliable sources of information, so you felt like you had good grounding to judge when other people went on rants. Meanwhile, G-Reco has everyone darting off in their own crazy directions so it's nearly impossible to tell if you're meant to take their accusations seriously, treat them as a sign of their limited understanding, or see them as comic relief. At the same time, you also had less exposition dumps. People said things when it fit the plot, and the plot was written so that characters would naturally answer audience questions.

What's more, Turn A juggled prospectives better. You saw soldiers and civilians, moon dwellers and Earthnoids, traitors and loyalists, all with their own goals on clear display. By contrast, G-Reco's cast does... whatever.

And for pacing, people talk about the speed often, but a bigger issue is how much time is wasted on fights that don't advance the plot. Instead, they tend to act as interruptions, taking up half an episode without any character development, plot progression, or other real purpose.

For my Gundam recommendation... it's not a perfect fit, but you might like Iron Blooded Orphans from some of the things you liked about Turn A. There's a lot of time for character focus since big fights tend to be more of a every-two-episodes thing than every episode, the plot setup is about a small mercenary company trying to run a blockade rather than full on wars at the start, and there's some mysteries of the past with a pretty cool payout. It's a very, very different show, but I'd say it's worth a look.
