A bloke I kinda knew died the other day at a mine I have spent a LOT of time at over the years, specifically with Dragline work.

quote:

"Preliminary investigations suggest that the worker undertook work using the cable tractor whilst the dragline was stationary," the alert stated.

"But that the worker [then] either re-entered or remained in the operational swing boundary when the dragline became operational."

The alert said Mr Peadon was then struck by the dragline propel shoe, resulting in the fatal injuries.

This is a shoe:

It seems that he might have been ascending into the House via the shoe JUST as it was performing a walk maneuver, likely throwing him from the shoe and then... well, stepped on.

I will say as a pedestrian, Ive been conditioned to not respond to honking if I’m not in a car’s space. In my past, someone honking meant targeted harassment, so my response to honking is to focus on the sidewalk ahead and ignore it.

Bike bells are an indication that a bike is coming up on me, which is a different cue. I also try to walk facing oncoming traffic, which helps. People who shout out what direction they’re on are the real MVPs.

A reasonable position for a world where cycling infrastructure is complete, and completely separate from automobile infrastructure - though the phrasing is obtuse.

In this world, you should know - because you passed the driving test - that the lanes you use aren't "car lanes" any more than this is a "horrible posts thread". Just because that's all you use it for doesn't mean those are the rules.

"car lanes" shouldn't exist except for on intercity divided highways

they definitely shouldn't exist in built-up areas, any space dedicated to automobiles instead of given over to actual people is essentially wasted

As a runner, I gave up on this. It’s a tossup at to whether people will hear “on your left” and process it as just “left” and now they are jumping in my way, or have the extra brain cell necessary to process that phrase and act appropriately.

Yeah, turns out monotonal beeps are good for alerting that something is happening but awful at drawing attention to WHERE it's happening.

My new stove plays random musical beeps when it reaches temp or the timer goes off and I was thinking about how those are using in place of "regular" alarms these days as they are harder to tune out. It works! It's much less piercing than a buzzer, but I certainly want to turn it off after a few seconds because there's no rhythm for my brain to latch onto and enjoy.

Sirens are fun. We're taught that a fire truck/emergency vehicle starts to "outrun" its siren at around 50mph. Obviously it's not actually outrunning the speed of sound, but other drivers need time to hear, process, and react to the siren, and if you're going fast enough, people won't have gotten further in the process than ignoring the distant siren.

In the U.S. in places willing to pay for it, the Q2B is still king and is pretty hard to ignore as it swings through a range of frequencies. With electric sirens, the higher frequencies are sometimes lost with newer more sound-proofed cars, and especially because drivers these days like to drive with headphones in like crazy people :psyduck:. Whelen came out with a "howler" which amplifies the sound down a few octaves. If you've been in a U.S. city lately you've probably heard it (sound at 4:20):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XY9PwfhVTuA

Newer electric sirens aren't as fun, but with the older units from the 80s you used to be able to get the selector dial in between any two settings to make entirely new sounds, and some people were virtuosos.

Siren remixing is a time-honored tradition where I come from. The reality is that people notice the change in tone pattern more than just the tone since EMS/Police don't get the massive sirens fire trucks sometimes get.

Here's the problem. If I'm riding my bike, I'm probably cruising at ~20mph. Faster with a tailwind. Pedestrians will be using the same path so they are in danger. If I ride in town, I'm going approximately traffic speed. On roads with a shoulder, I can use that. With no shoulder, I ride just left of the white line. There's plenty of room to pass me. I'm used to it. You won't hit me. I trust you.

Here's a thought, don't worry about cyclists. When I'm driving, I don't worry about them. They can see and hear better than I can if I'm driving. They know where I am. They aren't worried, neither should you be.

Maybe it's different in New York or San Francisco, but in Minneapolis, even down town, bikes are no concern. We're faster than the cars and smaller. We are not worth worrying about. If you hit us, it's our fault, not yours. I've been clipped here and there. I don't mind.

However, every time I've ridden on a trail that's used by people walking, they are in danger. Their default reaction to "On your left." is to jump into the middle of the trail and fall down. For God's sake, I'm calling out "Rider up", "Rider back", "On your left", etc. Yet people walking insist on a panic reaction of standing in the middle of the trail instead of moving a foot to their right.

I'd rather ride on the interstate. It's safer being passed at 70mph than constantly dodging pedestrians who are just trying to get hit.

It's because they don't hear you until they hear you. They go from 0-100, from "It's a beautiful day and I'm relaxed" to "WOW, there's a BIKE going FAST, getouttatheway!" in the span of a split second. Imagine being asleep in bed, and someone wakes you up with a command instead of a nudge.

I use my bell a few times well, well back from people I'm approaching. It'll go through the air better than my voice, and it's not a command. This gives them enough time to swivel their head around and realize someone else is coming up the trail behind them, and time to think & react appropriately.

If I'm going too fast for them to react appropriately, that's on me. If the trail is too crowded for me to shift left and pass them safely, that's my problem, not theirs.

Yeah, in T*xas here we have to do most concrete pours that happen during the summer overnight or it is just too hot. I am in an urban area so multi-floor construction projects that line up trucks around the block are pretty common, the public library right across the street from my apartment had a pour going on for weeks because the slab at the bottom of the the underground is parking level was 10,000 cubic yards (that’s about 1000 fully loaded concrete trucks). At least two of those trucks are backing up at any time and you end up with a lot of loud beeping for the neighbors.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIfIWG6TK5A

Most of the downtown projects and night projects recently have been using the white noise buzzers recently and it really helps.

You can also put one of those child bike noisemakers on if you commute on shared ped/bike paths a lot. It can be adjusted to not be super noisy but you still make a bit of a slappy buzzy noise and don’t need to ring the bell except for especially oblivious people.
