If there was a reprieve from the action it would make sense to do first aid, but once things start exploding on Discovery they don't stop until it's time for the denoument. Therapy was a bit silly and... is he qualified for that? but healing people in action is definitely something wish we saw in classic Treks. It's a shame we mostly saw him heal a couple of face wounds, not the people bleeding internally or concussed from the gravity slams, but I can use my imagination to assume he was treating them as well. Thing I'd take issue with here is why is he doing it physically himself, waving the magical wand is TNG/Voy/DS9 era stuff. By Disco future, there should either be little swarms of programmable matter that do that automatically once any injury detected, if not, a beam or whatever that shoots out and does the magic wand stuff without anyone having to stop and get involved. If not that, you wanna keep medic character around obviously, then they could be interfacing wirelessly with the computer to be doing the medtech stuff. IDK, just lack of future imagination and application. Most Disco future tech would probably be fine in the tail end of golden age trek in the timeline. Hell, people hated the "wish" gun from Picard but that's totally in-line more with the kind of poo poo I'd expect of future tech. Hell, split Culber in phase or whatever and have ten culbers around to heal anyone and himself asdamage happens. Plenty of injuries shipwide and could do the same with other med personnel. IDK just brainstorming.

Eh, I see the Temporal War as something where basically infinity things have already happened, you get a splintering mess of timelines swirling off each other as different time-travel equipped people from across time and space all get sucked in as they all try to use time travel to advance their agenda before they even had that agenda. You can fit the whole of Doctor Who into the temporal wars, it's just going to be a mess and because the timey wimey nature of it, you're already dealing with the odd alien fro mthe future who gets into using time travel because time travel manipulation always leads back to the suckass time-war mess and all it entails. I reckon any treaty or resolution to the temporal conflicts is because everyone's already tried time travel thi and that and it always leads to the same chaotic mess that's technically already or is happening. The timeline we watch on TV is one in which everyone in their timeball sorted it out agreed to just ununununundo everything and let the timeline they exist in finally just be regular and let's all agree to keep it that way because it took infinity of time war to sort out the mess once.

Pastamania posted:.....if they can put holographic characters on Books ship, why was Book on Books ship? They mentioned that the holo would be unstable at a distance, but the tether would help keep it steady. If they lost the tether and both of them were holos then the ship would be completely lost. Book, who made it very clear that he's a civilian and can do whatever he wants, and who was also acting irrationally out of grief, wouldn't have wanted to lose his ship for a silly reason like a bad connection. Of course, when the tether got snapped, Stamets didn't get any more unstable, but that's just Discovery's writers setting up something and failing to deliver on it, which is not a novel concept. I think the holo setup was literally just there to sidestep the question of sending both spore drive navigators on a suicide trip, which they actually explicitly call out when introducing the concept.

It was flat out stated to be able to interpret whatever its user wanted and make it happen. It was a wish gun.

My hot take is that the wish gun was good as a concept because really there should be more tech floating around in this setting that's indistinguishable from magic. Between all the replicators and psionic stuff that's already established, I didn't have much of a problem buying that race of Datas would come up with a tool like that. Kind of makes more sense to me than seeing super ubermench androids press physical buttons or whatever. And from a narrative standpoint it adds to the flavor of how advanced and precious their little society is. Drink-Mix Man fucked around with this message at 02:57 on Nov 29, 2021 |

Not that it was any better, but we did already see an ancient weapon that can apparently detect ill intent in a person in a TNG two-parter. Magic devices that make no sense are a cornerstone of Trek.

I think my problem with Picard's wish gun is not that it was effectively magic but that the two things that it did were entirely unrelated to each other. If it was a magic "fix whatever this is pointed at" gun then that would be cool, and if it was a magic "create perfect illusions" tool then that would be neat too. They should have either had it do a third unrelated thing to cement it as a do-anything tool or just had it do one thing, like maybe having the fix-it tool repair the Borg cube so it could fight the Romulans. The rule of three is important!!

Yeah I think if it was just one or the other it would've worked better. No one questions what a medical tricorder can do, we just know if a doctor waves it over you it makes you stop being sick. But if the medical tricorder suddenly was shooting pies at people it'd feel out of place, even if neither is no less 'magic'.

I don't think they even think about it that specifically so much as they just go 'this is what modern sci fi looks like' as a given. It's all so very generic. Modern sci-fi is semitransparent very thin lined largely single hued holographic user interfaces hovering in a flat plane in front of the user, so that has to be what they do to 'update' things. No programmable matter bar to hook their feet over to stay in place? And it seemed that when Tilly and Saru were talking in the corridor, there were a couple of plain old paramedic-sized oxygen tanks on the wall. Those would have been helpful in the end of last season as the deck slowly depressurized, as well as the space suits that we see in lockers at junctions.

Troi was once kidnapped and surgically altered to look Romulan, so it's clearly possible to do it with very little preparation or facilities. More impressive is when Worf had cosmetic surgery that reduced his ridges and the size of his skull. That seems a lot trickier than adding bits on.
