Crankit posted:Thanks guys, do the job centre send me a P45 when I end the benefits? Be aware that if they put you on 'emergency code' it might be a few months to get your full pay (though obviously at some point you will get a tax rebate). It took 5 long wretched months for HMRC to send my new taxcode to my employer. Fortunately, I had savings. (I filled in all the necessary with my employer - no P45 as I was self-employed prior to that, after a couple of months spent 45 mins on the 'chat' with HMRC who then sent me my new tax code but NOT my employer - they forgot - so my employer couldn't do anything about it. So then after another 2 months, another 45 mins on the 'chat' where they went full circle saying sorry they forgot to send the tax code then after 45 minutes decided to ask all the questions again, made a huge cock up, then another 45 mins later came round to what it was before). Anyway, hope it works out smoothly for you! Bearre tax: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkpooUqNEu8

They're great for just chilling I started playing geoguessr and watching these types of vids during lockdown. I really like seeing different places from this perspective.

Trip report: went to Tesco this evening and I'd say probably 80-90% of people were wearing masks, which is much more than I thought.

Same, the Co-op went from maybe 20% masks (being generous and including the staff and pensioners) to at least 80% masks or face shields or scarves within a day.Guavanaut posted:It's interesting for all the various jurisprudential waffling about "an unenforced law may as well not be law" and other commentary about the English having a special liberty bone that means they can never be governed like East Asians and so on, a barely enforced mask mandate raised mask wearing from 20% to over 80%, comparative to places where mask wearing is more culturally common, and it only seemed to slip after lifting the mandate and through confused and deliberately contrarian messaging from government.

There's a small group of people who will mask regardless of guidance, a small group of people who will never mask regardless of it being a law or not and then a huge group of people who understand the reasoning behind it but have no perspective about the overall impact of it, so they'll do it when they have to without any fuss and not bother when they don't have to. We should have kept it on transport at the very least because only tiny groups of people actually had a problem with it and the benefits are really drat good.

The trick is to slightly over-bend - fit it to your nose, then look at where the bends are and tighten the one over your nose and loosen the one between your nose and cheeks - that should do the trick for at least walking around - however when talking I find the nosepiece moves enough to occasionally put a little jet up to fog up the lenses, so I also use Zeiss anti-fog treatment spray (available at most opticians or from Amazon), which works perfectly to stop fogging (although because it leaves a slightly tacky residue you have to clean your lenses (and reapply) much more frequently. (Don't use the stuff you can get from motorbike and scuba shops designed for visors and goggles - it does work, but it leaves an even stickier residue and your glasses will be filthy immediately).

Guess I'll get to dust off the hi-viz and practice my Sandhurst Point. Smaller centres are popping up all the time, and they're pretty efficient. Some offer walk-ins and you might even convince a few people who aren't yet vaccinated through inertia to get it if they're already walking passed somewhere offering it. There are still a few of the larger centres around but the problem is that a lot of the venues have reverted to their proper functions and the volunteers have gone back to work. Plus, only the NHS staff can vaccinate the under-18s, and now they are all getting a second dose that means diverting them for longer than the NHS had originally intended.

I rarely read The Canary, but just saw this article: https://www.thecanary.co/opinion/2021/11/25/lord-mann-tried-to-take-down-the-canary-and-skwawkbox-and-failed/ quote:Earlier, we shared the results of an investigation into allegations of antisemitism at The Canary and Skwawkbox. This confirmed that we have always upheld the IMPRESS Standards Code and have neither discriminated against Jewish people, nor incited hatred against this group, of which I am personally a part. The government report that sparked the investigation was just another tactic employed in a clumsy attempt to harm our reputation, destroy our business, and silence the socialist Left. It failed. Also lol, I'm a frontline healthcare worker and my GP surgery keeps pestering me to book my booster jab, but every time I check, they're only available during my working hours. I cannot take time off work to do this and they're all at the other end of a bus ride, because I can't drive, because I'm loving blind as poo poo. Uggghhhhh.

And it works because hey, there are some anti-semites on the left like Ken Livingstone who couldn't go 5 minutes without talking about Israel despite being Mayor of London. Never-ending that it's proportionally a tiny problem for the left, especially compared to the right, it's a bludgeon & they are going to use it

Can't find it right now but saw something a few days ago that if you are a leftwing Jew you are 31x (IIRC) more likely to be kicked out of the party for anti-semitism (aka not worshipping at the feet of the actions of the government of the state of Israel) than anyone else.
