My LGA is pretty straightforward - Greens, Labor, Libs & Arts plus some independents that were easy to ignore. We'll end up with a Labor mayor & Greens deputy mayor most likely. My ward last time elected 1 Lib, 1 Lab & 1 Green and I'm expecting the same this time.

The exit of Fran Kelly was accompanied by some reminicences, other debris and near forgotten horrors. The commentary (meant to be high praise) about her moulding the political discourse was unintentially hilarious. And thanks for the reminder that Christopher Pyne exists. Much painful commentary about Christian Porter being 'hounded out of office'. As to LGA elections. Always check the online declarations. There is often comedy gold. Most of our local independant councillors are members of the National Party and have their campaigns funded. The Mayor (A National who is also a gaping anus ~not in this case a synonym~) has decried the Greens candidate as 'politicising what has always been an apolitical local council'. Our ticket has a Group A and B who upon researching turn out to both be far right happy clappers hoping to get votes because voting for them is the least effort (everyone else is ungrouped). So, yes, do your research. Johnstone, a 43-year-old Wiradjuri man, was handcuffed and shackled when he elbowed a corrective services officer and ran off outside Lismore Base hospital in northern NSW on 15 March 2019. He died from the single bullet wound to his back, despite receiving medical care. The coroner, Teresa O’Sullivan, suspended the inquest after referring a known person to the NSW director of public prosecutions. NSW law prevents publication of submissions made at the inquest about whether to refer the person, and any comment made by the coroner about such a referral. Johnstone had been taken into custody earlier in the day after being denied bail on assault charges. A corrective services officer appeared in court in March on manslaughter charges and was granted bail to reappear in May. ISSUES RAISED Injured in custody, force used, mental health / cognitive impairment.

Having not kept up with things, what's the difference between NSW and VIC restrictions right now? They both seem to have a similar vaccination rate, so why did the NSW daily case numbers drop so much more than VIC?

Silly question re WA politics. So the WA Libs only have 2 seats in state parliament, after the most recent elections. How about Federally? Also, will this anti state Lib sentiment translate to the Federal libs? Will they lose seats in WA? And if so, will it hurt them?

BrigadierSensible posted:Silly question re WA politics. Even regardless of state politics the Federal Libs seem to have pissed a lot of people off by siding with Palmer against WA. In terms of hurting, the margins will be really tight for Libs in the election, they effectively need to gain ground to stay in government because of seat redistribution

There are lots of commentators who are sticking to the conventional wisdom that state sentiment does not transfer to federal elections, which to me ignores the fact that the last two years have been more different than any other time in the past 70 years. Purely anecdotal, but all my family are in WA and I don't get the impression they think very kindly of the current federal government and the way it kept sledging Mark over the border closures, and would feel that way irrespective of whatever party Morrison happens to be. I don't think we're going to see anything remotely as dramatic as the state election but I would be surprised if the Liberals don't lose votes to some degree.

She says the hospital have been rolling out training for advanced life support, losing tons of older anti vax nurses, she's resigned to being in full PPE so she can still work. She thinks the new nurses coming in are hopelessly under experienced. The hospital knows they aren't going to be able to handle it when Covid gets out of hand but they're trying their best to be prepared with what they have. It's just grim and it feels like it didn't have to be this way.

I have no idea how they think the medical system is going to cope with covid cases when it already isn't coping without them. Immunocompromised family makes it hit pretty close to home too. They are vaccinated, for what little good it'll actually do for them.
