There's probably room for fairly respectable titty miniatures, like there's room for respectable erotica like Iron Circus Comics' Smut Peddler series.

I went to art school for a while and it was a great experience in that I really learned that for me it's a hobby, not something I wanted to try to turn into a profession. I've always managed to make a decent living and pay myself a good wage, but I've also always had a art job like teaching. That has let me be more choosey with what art I make and how much I sell it for. I do think artists are their own worst enemies, I know so many artists that sell stuff at a loss on time and even materials sometimes. It creates a perception that art [not made by famous artists] isn't valuable. That said, I should charge roughly double for my work, but at least I'm paying myself a living wage. Most people I know are paying themselves less than $10 an hour, sometimes less than $5. Virtual Russian fucked around with this message at 19:18 on Dec 3, 2021 |

It could also be that 100% of the porn commissions are online, or that the porn art is for fun and the commissions are all clean. Actually you're right, I missed the 'and online' bit and read it as they were just selling to class mates which seemed unlikely. They probably sold the first few in class then discovered a lucrative online market.

Oh man, the RPG of that was...certainly something. Like the titular characters were invariably "thin and lithe" or some poo poo, like basically gothy skinny elves. They had some sort of magic poo poo which also determined social standing. Their magic points/power/whatever were directly tied into their physical attributes, the primary of which also determined physical size. Since they were all skinny, this meant that basically the society was ordered from tallest to shortest.

I'm laying here in bed, past 5 am from driving home from a con, bone tired and aching. I do commissions for a living, many furry, and while the community is great, it's not easy money. You don't just whip out a poorly drawn fox prick and cash falls on you. Those 15k/month Patreons are both outliers and the results of both luck and networking. Yeah, my rear end made a big chunk of my rent in 3 days, sure, but that was the result of a lot of work, both by me and for me, and it ain't always so good. I'm hoarse from all the selling I did, my arms and hands hurt from the results of going constantly at art since I was 13. There is a lot of networking and other poo poo I don't want to fully derail with here. Were I not exhausted, I might not be such a prick about this, but don't come away with the idea that this is an easy gravy train here, christ, that simply doesn't exist in the art world, unless you're a nft scam jackass or something.

I think it's not so much "drawing fox dicks is easy money" as "if you want a remotely liveable income then you need to be drawing fox dicks". Nobody's willing to pay artists as much as it actually costs to make a picture, but suspiciously wealthy furries pay more than anyone else.

Now listen here, speaking as an nft scam jackass I'll have you know it's not easy money. You have to pay for all the equipment up front and you need to know SO MANY complete idiots, plus you have to draw all the monkeys from life or else the art doesn't breathe.

Also I don't get the "suspiciously wealthy" part. People have disposable income. Instead of buying Call Of Duty 19: It's In Space Again with season pass for $130, or a boxed set of Primaris Lieutenants for $200, they commission some art. Sure fursuits are expensive, but I guarantee I've spent more on warhammer than most people have on a suit.

I guess if you think about it anyone with a hobby gets labelled as weird for how much they spend on it by people with no interest in it. If your experience of boardgames stops at Monopoly, you would struggle to believe how much I spent on Batman The Animated Series; Shadow of the Bat all-in. To which I can only respond with 'it is a gorgeous pile of stuff I will spend many hours not only playing, but painting while giggling with nostalgic glee'. No, you're weird!

The suspiciously wealthy bit is just from a lot of high profile furries being senior engineers, network admins, or other STEM fields that have a lot of disposable income, same as the guys who commission fully painted warhammer armies.DicktheCat posted:I might find and punch the guy that drew this, it was funny for a bit, but not now that folks actually do consider furry a cash cow, pun sort of intended. This is 100% true, I've literally not gone homeless and starved because of the kindness of furries, as in, I have literally been taken in by them before. However, this post has the right of it: Fashionable Jorts posted:Also I don't get the "suspiciously wealthy" part. People have disposable income. This is the exact truth behind the "suspiciously wealthy" part. Most of them save up for that big art purchase or suit, the same as you might save for a game console or new computer. I have been told by folks that they literally saved up just to buy my art before. There are an insane number of STEM pros in furry, I will admit, but it's not like that doesn't exist in other nerd communities.

I was literally writing that furry has tons of STEM when this was posted. The artist themselves may have not been implying that, but do you know how many times I've been told "haha, I should learn to draw, if it's easy as that!" No. The market isn't like that. Sorry to come off indignant and apoplectic, because I was. I'm just weary of doing art being seen as a simple, fun job that's always such a perfect joy and not work at all, and the convo simply just hit me wrong.
