I hate most of the female voices in Japanese for Wing so the dub is my preferred way to watch. Wufei does have the superior original VA though.

Oh the joy of watching Wing after Fushigi Yuugi though. It was a whiplash moment for me when I watched Wing subbed because Heero and Tamahome are very, very different characters even if they have the same intense thing with a lady.

#0144 - And At The End Of The Rainbow?

For some reason the road signs point straight down, being legible by no-one at all times. It takes no time at all for the cops to find where these trucks are.

Al pretends to have found his bigger brother to avoid a cop being MURDERED. Oh, and then Al defects and joins the Special Forces.

Wow even the Special Forces hate Bernie for some reason :(. Like his VA might be flat but he doesn't deserve that.

Bernie gets knocked out by Als neighbor, Kriss. Kriss checks on Bernie and sees his pupils dilate. She's thankful he's alive. What kind of bat are you using, lady?!

And then the Special Forces just show Al the Mobile Suit. Sure. Guess they've only got one MS.

Now with First Person Action!

Is Kris the main character of this series now? Please say yes, its either her or Bernie or Burt Reynolds.

Door decoders are back, neat. Its a good thing nobody ever installed cameras in these super secret tunnels.

Bernie is successfully goaded by a child into jumping through space, and they almost die. Patrol comes back and Al is about to get caught filming the Gundam when FADE TO BLACK.

Cyclops Team is pissed about Bernie because they're a hardened team of veterans who've been taking the toughest jobs since Loum, and then command sticks them with a 19 year old kid fresh out of training who already crashed a MS. They don't hate him, but they're reasonably concerned that he'll screw up and get them all killed.

Also, Chris's name isn't spelled with a K. Lieutenant Christina Mackenzie actually has a few cameos in the MS era artbook as part of its crossover with War in the Pocket.

Episode opens up with a cameo from yours truly. Also Al did a Batman move where he teleported 8 feet up and onto a steel pipe, making absolutely no noise AND not being spotted by the two guards looking directly at him.

Steiner's in this?! That Genetic Freak? Garcia goes mad over a successful recon mission. Bernie is reprimanded for following orders; at least they aren't punching the kid.

Wow this relationship's really heating up, they are on a first-name basis now!

It's christmas in this series too!? What a coincidence! You love to see maintenance personnel getting unrestricted access to security areas without an escort. *chefs kiss*

Al doesn't get that the Zeon are bad, and is clearly being indoctrinated into their Fascist ideals. The angry girl in Al's classroom is pinging my "She's a Zeon follower and so is her family" radar rather hard now that Al's getting teased for being a fash.

Burt Reynolds and his Steiner Squad? I'm very excited for the Battletech/Gundam crossover.

Garcia asks if Bernie has ever worn body armor, then drops the subject. Garcia then doesn't want to lose someone lower-ranked then him? Uhh... sure?

Metal Sonic!

The scientist from the base reminds me of Lucius Fox from Batman. Bernie's disguise fails when he forgets what season it is in Sydney. This is... this is NOT the combat scenes I was expecting.

Wait holy poo poo Gundam's can have giant shotguns!? Why wasn't this ever a thing before?! Scarlet team sucks so bad they all get owned immediately.

Garcia's gonna blow up the Mobile Suit~ oh... OH. Christ almighty this show's pretty wild.

Al almost loses his lunch after seeing a dead kid. Burt Reynolds is dead. His last words were "BERNIE, YOU'RE A TERRIBLE LIAR". Fitting.

If the Gundam isn't destroyed by Christmas Day, Side 6 will get nuked. The old bartender wants Bernie to leave, and is fine with staying behind because he's had a good long life.

Bernie and Al are not handling death very well. Love that they are shouting all this in some public park. Guess Side 6 residents are like me, afraid to go outside and flirt with nature.

Bernie's entire career has been a lie, apparently. Al seems to think that they can just recover Misha's Zaku, repair it, then defeat the Gundam.

SEGA Aracades with the what the gently caress is with these sudden civilian murder scenes? Al's going Space Mad. PTSD hits you fast.

I'm not convinced that Al won't just try to stab Christina in order to steal the Gundam. Currency is called "Hypes".

Apparently someone was firing some 9mm-esque firearm in the school's vicinity. Nothing else explains how the casings are there. Al is going space mad again.

Captain Von Hellsing, German military, ready and waiting to nuke Side 6. Al tries his Lance Archer imitation. It doesn't work.

Worth mentioning that while the Alex's arm gatlings are fairly powerful in their own right, the reason they just absolutely shred the Kampfer is because that unit has basically no armor whatsoever, it basically dedicates all of its available space to thrusters and it having a beam saber(alongside the Gelgoog and the Act Zaku it's one of the first Zeon MS able to use one)

Gundam Battle Operation 2 replicated this very accurately, it can do some absolutely devastating damage at close range between it's high speeds and the fact that all of it's ranged weapons can stun(stun is ridiculously powerful in this game), but it has very low health and damage resistances for it's native cost range so if anyone with a decent ranged weapon can spot it before it can close the gap it's probably going to lose at least half it's health within the next couple of seconds(and if it's really unlucky will end up with broken legs and be completely doomed)

Caught up on the thread! Good Gundam talk in here, happy to see it. And Tomino talk and quotes, always good, what a legendary gent.

I finished the first series recently, great stuff! I loved the movie trilogy as my gateway way back when, so it's nice to see the full version. Took me quite a while, but the last 20 episodes or so I marathoned pretty hard.

Char's bazooka moment is still the most glorious thing ever seen.

Also, Amuro talk, it's funny, I see talk of him not being a normal affable guy etc, not having friends. But he's the man in my book. Right from episode 1 (or movie 1), I just feel for that guy. He's a bit awkward and shy etc, and under crazy PTSD circumstances, but man that's what makes the show so compelling. I can't think of many better protagonists. Amuro: good guy.

My next move is a bit more ambiguous! I love Zeta, but I don't rewatch stuff so much, yet I may give that one. But I've also been meaning to watch ZZ forever, stuff like that. Sure haven't seen G-Gundam, sounds fun. And the thread is raising my interest in IBO, that guy with a zillion wives situation sounds rad.

For now, gonna watch 08th MS Team next, one of the many shows I saw one or two eps of way back, about time to rock it. So much Gundam to choose from!

Oh yeah the full TV show does show more of how anti-social and full of himself early Amuro was. He does grow and mature a lot through the course of the story, becoming positively level-headed by the end and even genuinely wise by Zeta, but I'm not surprised the compilation movies compressed that.

Right on, I may just have a different take on Amuro in general, big Amuro stan. Everybody on the crew practically was a bit cranky and flawed, which fits well. He's not much more social by the end of the show, there's that bit where Sayla mentions that he hasn't been talking to Fraw Bow etc, and his earnest reaction to how it's sort of not something he's thought about was cool. And they do have a little moment, for sure he's grown and is empathetic. But he is still very much a keep to himself guy in a really unimaginable situation.

Just what I mean is, I don't think Amuro needs to be a normal sociable guy who is handling everything well etc. That's what makes him so compelling and relatable to me. I got more or less a similar read on him via the trilogy and the full series, but for sure lots of little moments add up via the TV series. I sure like Kai and Sayla more than before I think. I just always was feeling for and digging the epic struggle of Amuro. That dude rules. I just mean as far as ranking protagonists, the talk a bit back was leaning more towards the friendly and levelheaded types.

Man, how messed up was that stuff on Side 6 with his dad? Good lord. Tomino is the king of beautiful epic tragedy. He is the Shakespeare of anime.

They STILL haven't found the destroyed Zaku in the park? The hell!?

Al takes a pipe to a Feddie jeep and that takes both guards attention. Bernie takes the truck and neither soldier suspects the random kid that made it past security to smash up their car.

Apparently a fog machine and some balloons is enough to take out a Gundam. This series is going to suck when it ends with Side 6 getting nuked because Bernie severely overestimates his chances.

Why would you not just warn the feds by telling Christina or like... writing up a fake intercepted message and just have them surrender the Gundam instead?

So not only is this Zaku getting repaired, and functional again, but it is located on a hill's slope overlooking most of the colony and NOBODY SEES IT!?

Bernie gives Al his death note. How much fake money am I betting on it being for Christina, they both die, Zeon hears the Gundam is destroyed and doesn't nuke the Side, Al is Space Mad'ed from all the PTSD.

Al prays to God and admits to torturing and killing frogs. gently caress Al, I hope he dies.

Oh my, the feds captured a Zeon ship with nukes on it. Time to tell Bernie to cancel the attack! :rip: Bernie, he's going to be hosed.

Christina is a doofus and wastes most of her ammo uselessly Bernie almost gets domed, Christina almost dies.

Cool

Freeze-flame with Bernie explodifying. Considering the damage, I'd be surprised if Christina survived... Oh, she's alive, then.

Al "Meteors go Whoosh" Fred. Holy poo poo they got an IV into Christina before even a stretcher, those medics are efficient.

Bernie wouldn't have been able to live with himself if he'd run away. Well, its fine, that decision was taken from you. Bernie trying to say "all sides" and "we're all just doing our jobs". What a shithead.

Yo Al wakes up and he's got a loving machine gun in his room and am I going insane because I don't recall that being the fake one he used for games...

Oh we time-jumped to the 14th of January, that's a pretty big step. Does Al's dad not recognize Zeon insignia? Does Christina?

Berne isn't a great pilot, but he was absolutely an unrecognized genius strategically and mechanically and deserved that spot on a spec ops team just on those skills alone. If they'd had him working on distractions and field preparations before the Kampfer fight, the Alex would almost certainly have been toast.

Christina barely takes any damage though? When the Zaku II FZ cuts the Alex across the cockpit, the only damage she takes is in the arm. Which is the only time she gets hurt so far as we're shown in the entire fight. She probably took some knocks while piloting, but she was strapped in and wearing an environmental suit which would presumably provide some protection against head trauma, whiplash etc. through padding and other means. The fact she has to be carried out of the Gundam barely conscious has always seemed a bit weird to me, given the actual damage she takes.

I assumed the fact that chris was in such a bad state was because the alex hadn't actually ever been in a combat scenario and it was tuned for amuro. the easier answer is that it probably just makes more sense for the dramatic tensions

It's probably just down to that, yeah. If I recall, when Bernie first cuts the arm gatling off the Alex, he just shears the actual gatling component off the top of the arm, but damages it enough that the arm is basically useless the rest of the fight, but then at some point while the Alex and Zaku II FZ are facing off in the open the camera cuts to a new angle, and the arm goes from a full arm with the gatling cut off to missing below the elbow. Which is probably meant to mirror the damage to the Zaku II at that point, so it comes across as equal damage.

Yeah a lot of stuff in gundam is meant to just imply a heightened sense of reality vs. the technical details of things for the sake of communicating tension and story and character. Sometimes it also coincides with the physical aspects of the reality displayed but it depends on the type of story being told and director intention

I think Amuro's probably the best too, but it's partially because he grows so much. Like, him being kind of a poo poo at the beginning is part of what makes him work. Then again, thinking of Char's Counterattack, final Amuro isn't that different from initial Amuro in a lot of ways. He's still a weird nerd who's not great with new people, he's still a MS geek, he still has a temper. The difference is that he's grown into it by CCA, in more ways than one. He's got friends and, while he isn't the best with new people, he's willing to at least try to talk, he appreciates people more, he can focus on what he has to do without complaint or self-aggrandizement. He's more Amuro than ever, even as he leaves behind things that seemed to be character defining when they held him back.

If you're looking for someone who'd be pleasant to hang out with, then sure. Loran's a better pick. But Amuro grows the most, which makes him a more compelling character. (And the contrast between Amuro as an initially awkward nerd and Char as the cool guy ace makes their eventually progression to hero ace pilot with his poo poo sorted out and total mess just doing whatever it takes to get people off his back even more interesting.)

As for other shows, IBO's not everyone's cup of tea, but I highly recommend it in general. It does a great job with juggling a massive cast, has a cool space Yakuza story setup that separates it from the usual full on wars, and the fights are vicious and meaty rather than falling into the beamspam habits that you get with SEED or late 00. The main Gundam pilot is also a fascinating little bundle of hosed up. Gundam's done the whole "child soldier with no regular social skills" a couple of times before in main shows, but they wound up heroic and messianic figures. Mikazuki... doesn't do that. G and Turn A are also first rate, with very different tones. (Turn A is more pastoral, about trying to prevent a war as often as it's about fighting one, and G is full on martial arts epic.)

Huge war scene, lots of explosions. Some dude really wants to die even though his carrier was taken out and commander killed.

Cut to a fight scene with a GM and some Zakus, animations looking good as usual. Red 5, Red 4, Red 3, and Red 2... must be a test/training flight. Looks like they might be shooting paintballs?

Captain Synapse and Ms. PURPLETON. Sure, whatever. At what point do I get to still be annoyed by dumb names? Replaying Operation British, the visual is nice.

Twin-pilot Mobile Suit? Cut to some dude doing pushups on pavement with some weak-rear end form.

Keith is going to be the protag, huh? One of them, anyways. Keith and Ko make it to the Gundam, unperturbed. Guess I know who's going to be the pilots for the gundams. Keith needs a slap.

Ox is an idiot, Keith and Ko immediately figure out what the secret is to the Nuclear-Gundam. Cut to the traitor from Anaheim in the jeep transporting the Zeon commander who immediately gets into the passenger seat. Good loving thing nobody else exists on this base.

Oh look, no keys necessary for Gundam access. I WARNED YOU! I WARNED YOU ALL!

The injury to her arm is from some shrapnel the blade tearing across the cockpit sends flying. It's certainly something she'd want sorting out, but it doesn't come across as immediately life threatening by any stretch, and doesn't even look like it's causing significant blood loss to explain why she's so faint when she's pulled out of the cockpit. Which itself is weird, given that she's so alert and focused while facing off against Bernie immediately before hand. That at least can just be explained as adrenaline carrying her through the pain, so she hasn't even realized it yet. Still a bit weird, but ultimately in service of a good narrative and theme so it's not something that overly bothers me.

The true hell of this universe is shown to be that school isn't cancelled just because they bombed your school! Merry Christmas!

Wing dub starts off as a meme but is overall fine, G Gundam dub is the best way to watch the show and all the modern dubs are good, you people are insane

Adrenaline would explain how she's still inert. Shrapnel is still weird for a cutting attack, not an explosive one. Regardless, War in the Pocket is good, if not great, and the only negatives involve the school stuff with Al.

At some point, all attacks are bludgeoning at some level. That battle axe's blade is the size of a semi-truck and trailer, and the Gundam's chest is more complicated than just a piece of sheet metal. What doesn't get cut is getting crushed and bashed inward, and anything in the path is getting some of that force too. Instruments, fasteners, glass, etc all part of the debris. The metal shard was probably part of some other component that was unlucky enough to be in the way.

I forget, was her being a Cyber Newtype alluded to in the original series?

So in my continuing effort to discredit Victory as a mess, yes and no (and since it wasn't addressed by anyone before now). my recollection is that there is some throw away line about how she's been "enhanced" by Zanscare and since she's gone for like 20-30 episodes it's hard to really be sure what that means (we are never really shown or explained about what she did with them), but when we see her next she is an unhinged super psychic which certainly tracks with how cyber newtypes are presented in UC gundam.

Everything about her presentation and manifestation of her newtype ability + behavior once we see her with it, pegs her as a cyber newtype imo.

I was incredibly confused and unsure what thread I was in looking at this, since there are a number of threads where this image would partially work.
