There are a lot of ways to do remote access and many of them wouldn't show up on the local screen like that. That doesn't make this defense any more plausible, of course. All the ways I'm thinking of would have to be deliberately set up, and would leave traces that would be pretty obvious to an investigator. Dude's still guilty as hell.
