Florida feederboard 2021: MVP: Bobwhite Dumbest: Mourning Dove Cutest: Tufted Titmouse Class clown: Budgerigar Best Defense: Boat-Tailed Grackle (so, so many of them, and they're almost the size of crows) Best Offense: Nanday Parakeet (the only birds I saw successfully chase off the boat tails) Least Believable: Pileated Woodpecker (Jesus Christ what are you doing at a bird feeder please don't destroy my house sir!)

BetterLekNextTime posted:They are a lot bigger than Mourning Doves and are invasive in the US so I’m not surprised they’re king of your feeder. I'm not in the US, so they're not invasive or the kings of the feeders, just the most self-preoccupied with everything other than just eating seeds to the point of being outside the usual pecking order scuffles. The biggest bully of the garden is a wee robin. He terrorises everyone, including my dog, the chickens, and the hooded crows who are otherwise the enforcers of all animals in the neighborhood. He's really cute though and follows me around when I garden

mrmcd posted:Honestly surprised Mourning Doves ranked this high because they are not... smart. But they are hungry. I was outside on my porch smoking one day after putting some food out for a neighborhood cat to eat. He did not finish his dinner. A mourning dove pointedly circled past a few times, landing on different branches with good views of the cat food between rounds. So I was like,”okaaaay. I get it.” And went inside to watch it glide over to eat the last few pieces of cat food from a window... I mean, I looked through a window to watch it eat the cat food. The cat food was located on the porch. The cat had hosed off into the woods to do cat stuff.

There's this nice Swedish lady on one of the Discord servers I'm on, she's an avid birder and just made this video montage of her birding trip to Sri Lanka. Plenty of good quality photos of very pretty birbs, as well as some other critters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6INsgKP_i4I

The giant hummingbird comes in at a whopping 18 - 24 grams - nearly an ounce - with a wingspan of 21.5cm. This makes it more than twice the size of the next biggest hummingbird. It burns so much energy that the only way it can stay alive some nights is to enter a state of torpor where the body temp drops from 35C down to 10C. It still loses ~10% of its body weight overnight when doing this. Hovering to feed burns so much energy for them that they sometimes actually bother to land to feed because eating on the go would literally kill them if they did it all the time.

New Zealanders like to brag about how destructive the Kia is but that bird is only destructive in adolescence. Sulfies will evolve a way to have rail guns on their egg shells at some point in the not too distant future for no evolutionary need - just to wreck poo poo.

The Cockies that have learned how to open the secured bins then teach other Cockies how to do it. Birds in 44 Sydney suburbs now know how to pry open bins and birds in different suburbs have different techniques. I’m so glad there aren’t any living in my immediate area but we hear them flying over most mornings. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/video/2021/jul/23/sulphur-crested-cockatoos-learn-to-open-wheelie-bins-in-sydney-video
