Part of it probably has a lot o do with how depressed wages are and how that’s been hidden by the simultaneously falling prices of most goods. You can buy more stuff so you don’t feel poor but when you look around you don’t really have anything valuable.

MrYenko posted:Actively avoiding the cheapest physical shovelware has been a huge improvement in my quality of life. I despise disposable junk. Almost every long-handled tool I own is at least sixty years old. They tend to be in great shape and cheap at yard/tag/rummage sales, especially if they're dirty. I got tired of handles that broke and spade blades that literally bent in half. That said, Harbor Freight is an exercise in learning what cheap poo poo will work, for at least as long as you need it. They sell decent-enough one- or two-piece tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers) that serve for most homeowner applications. You takes your chances with more complex stuff; sometimes the quality is surprisingly OK.

I try to only buy things I know will last and that I'll be happy with long term. That means that I rebuy stuff way less frequently than most people I know because I don't buy stuff that's 'disposable.' It also means that I buy way less stuff in the first place which is good. I'm using a 2013 macbook air to type this because it still works perfectly for the role intended: browsing the web while being light weight with a long battery life. I maxed the ram and cpu at a cost then, but it would be seriously struggling now if it had a dual core cpu with no HT and only 4 GB of ram. The headphones I use on my computer are something like 13 years old at this point. A friend of mine kept buying cheap headphone garbage off aliexpress and was always surprised when it was garbage and would buy more. He must have purchased 10-15 sets in a couple of years alone. And the stuff you're replacing is worthless, so it just goes in a landfill. Problem is, most people simply can't afford to buy good things. With CPI rapidly outpacing minimum wage, and in general pay for everyone, it's hard to afford good quality items. It's not a choice for most people. Our economy relies on people buying things they need to constantly replace. To quote Pratchett: “The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

I had always thought Air France was a top tier carrier, weird to find out that is not the case! What’s the best out of the US domestics, I haven’t flown Delta ever and been a long time since I flew AA, and United I find to be fairly similar to Air Canada. I like their byod infotainment thing more than having screens everywhere as well tbh. Probably will be doing the yvr-sfo or san jose fairly often in a year or two. Most likely will be AC/United code shares.

Even at the tender age of 11, being on an MWR outing to the gorgeous seaside comune of Taormina in mid-October of 1991 remains a staunchly depressing memory for me. Imagine a kindergarten field trip, only without the "kiddie tether" and the adults behaving worse. Nothing says "gently caress your country and its culture" more than trundling about in Budweiser shirts and NASCAR caps while bemoaning the fact that "no one speaks English." Sicilians hated Americans...until you made the bare minimum of effort to humble yourselves on their behalf and *try* to speak Italian. Then they'd loving *die* for you trying to accommodate your needs. 95% of people on base never bothered. priznat posted:Probably will be doing the yvr-sfo or san jose fairly often in a year or two. So during the 80's the Coast Guard bought some Dassault Falcons 20s for SAR and drug intersection work. They were pretty heavily modified for SAR work. But someone at the Coast Guard wondered if they could get on site faster. So they had one modified to have an engine with an afterburner. When I research it, I find conflicting info. That only one engine had an afterburner, or both did. Either way it was abandoned because one of the primary traits you want in a plane for SAR is loitering time and afterburners don't really play well with that.

Paris might've smelled of piss to me, but it was preferable to pre-emissions standards Rome. First time simply being *outside* during the day burned my eyes from all the leaded exhaust. They didn't change standards for the people's health, but rather because the caustic emissions were eating away at the tourist landmarks.
