Is Mario golf the speedgolf all the time? Or Mario tennis any good?

Can either hold a candle to their gbc counterparts?

Speed golf is only an option/mode. It can be regular golf all the time, too. I never play speed golf outside of when I have to in the campaign.

Edit: what's the multiplayer like for Saints Row 4, specially on the Switch?

I'm glad you asked! I can't speak for Mario Golf, I don't like golf, as a sport or as a game, so I don't buy them, but I do love a good tennis game.

Mario Tennis Aces is an excellent tennis game. The mechanics are incredibly good. You have a slew of Mario characters to choose from (Daisy!), and the game is fluid and fun. The main game mode gives you a sort of Power Meter that gets charged as you play, it adds a sort of Rock Paper Scissors to the normal flow of game play since it allows for power shorts, slowing down time, and other things. You can use it to also block power shots, so you don't want to be caught at break point with out a bit of juice. It more or less transforms the tennis game into a sort of fighting game with counters and super attacks being launched back and forth, and being Mario Tennis it's rather intuitive to use. All that said, I'm old fashioned so I still prefer "Simple" Tennis as the game calls it (Classic mode otherwise). It's just tennis, and the rules/physics are fine-tuned but the same as they've been since the GBC. It plays pretty great.

So what're the problems? There's really not a lot to do. You asked how it compares to the GBC legend. Not counting mechanics, it's pretty terrible. There's a barebones story mode, that isn't a menu between matches but may as well be, there's no real world to explore, no plot, and you just play as Mario. The pseudo-RPG storyline is not there, the story mode can't be more than 20 matches or so, so you'll quickly beat it. There used to be online tournaments but the game is so old I don't think they do them anymore.

In fact, I can't get online easily if at all. I imagine you can still have a blast with you have people to locally play with, but be sure you're all of the same skill, because as happens in my cases, I'll beat everyone and no one wants to play. Mario Kart has better catch-up mechanics, and is still fun for people who aren't coming in first place, Mario Tennis is not that game.

Don't expect the GBC game, I fear that'll never come back. If you have friends that will play with you go for it, but only if "it" means $30 or less. You'll feel ripped off at full-price I think. It's a worthy candidate for digital since it's real use is as a multiplayer game, but you may find it a temporary enough interest that going physical could be worthwhile.

Welp looks like I'll be trying out this franchise 'cause I've got $4.

Even if I don't like the game I still like the idea that this level of discount is accidental and I'm ever-so-briefly the master of the system instead of its slave.

Mmm, consumerism.

edit: Saint's Row 3 is only $14, which I could justify spending if it's enough of a better game.

Given that I've not played a GTA since regular III (not that I didn't enjoy it, just not what I normally seek), 'm I better off with 4 or 3?

(I also heard the Switch port of 3 had more technical issues but if it's not game-breaking I probably don't mind.)

The game doesn't really expect you to know much about the story or characters, so just jump in while it's cheap and then go back and play the other ones if you like it. 2 is my personal favourite.

I bet it even make the previous games a little more fun knowing your character becomes the president of the united states

I Feel Pretty!

The Switch port of Saints 3 had some issues at launch, with weird rain and sound glitches, but they've been patched up since. Still has some distance draw, but it's not terrible.

My experience with Saints 4 is skewed because I first played it on Xbox and it was a buggy mess. I'm down to give it a second go for that sale price though. My nitpicks are that there's 2 scenes you have to do that are instant death if you touch the walls, and they sucked. Cars are useless once you get your powers up, and the game's only recourse is to make you do escort missions in them. It's also missing the best taunt from Saints 3 for whatever reason. "Kneel and suck, punk!"

Best Saints games go 2 > 3 > 4 imo.

GTA Trilogy is already 20% off. I'd like to clear up a bit of my backlog, but I'll get it on sale one day. I think I've seen Bioshock trio go as low as 50%, so I hope that happens here someday.

My partner's mildly approved of Wilmot's Warehouse. It certainly is a perfect game for my Tetris-obsessed rear end, but she's a harder sell. She doesn't care for the time limits, I'd love to turn them off, but she's ok with me running deliveries while she putters around organizing things. We'll see if it holds up. Stardew Valley lost her in the Winter since she's not super fond of fishing, and she hates the combat in the mines. She's trying to be friends with everyone town, but that only occupies so much time per week.

ilmucche posted:

I agree, but you can have a good time if you have IRL friends. I don't! So it kinda sucked but I still played it a fair amount. It's like Smash. Not great online, not great solo, just the best with other people. When I was younger it was a virtual toybox with virtual action figures, but I'm not that imaginative anymore.

Wildtortilla posted:

It's not that bad.

It's definitely the best arcade tennis game I've ever played, mechanically speaking. It's pretty, moves fast, and definitely has something that can make it great.

I don't know who's booted up Mario Tennis 64, but Nintendo has been making barebones Tennis Games since forever. I don't think the 64 game had anything extra aside from exhibition and Tourney matches against AI or Friends. In that vein, this game has that and it plays really well. It's a party game. You need to have friends present, which is something Nintendo has always been all about.

We were given a moment of glory with the GBC game, which I adore, but I don't expect it anymore, they've made that much clear.

Just got a text from a friend I hadn't heard from in ages, was looking for the name of that one tactics RPG where you could recruit the monsters.

It was Tactics Ogre and for some bizarre reason there does not(?) appear to be a version on the Switch, unless you count PPSSPP running on a hacked Switch.

He asked me how hard it would be to hack his Switch and I said don't bother.

But he did end up with Loop Hero and Saints Row IV so mission accomplished?
