If the average person is bedridden by illness, they'll stop spreading it, while a milder version lets them walk around the community. It doesn't work for covid, which is most contagious before severe illness happens. When they canceled their plans to go back in person at the beginning of the year it turned out to be because they had early access to some wastewater reports that were showing holy poo poo lmao levels of spreading.

We're in an arms race against the virus and we're gonna lose rn. Maybe a miracle durable vaccine pops up or the anti-virals are good enough to keep it under control, but omicron is a huge loving alarm siren and the response is "its mild!"

It also doesn't matter much because by and large we're not yet at the point where we are literally, rather than figuratively, leaving people to die in the streets. We are still either giving them hospital care, or tending to them at home. The bedridden are still getting people sick.

So I realize that surgical tape is cheaper than buying K/N95s. I'm already elastomeric elite, but I do have to sometimes wear other masks since I'm going to the doctor or need to be able to speak clearly even with the speech diaphragm it's hard. So what I'm wondering is, then, yeah, if the failure point is the seal and not the filter medium, is there any reason I can't just surgical tape a 3M Aura or Powecom to my face? Seems a good way to get more mileage out of your N95s.

post COVID posted:Yeah I mean the lines were really faint but I'm definitely negative. We're vaccinated, it's fine. Exactly, I also found out the one who’s infected probably knew they were infected with something several days earlier and still saw everyone, let her elderly parents who travelled here stay with her, and once she tested positive with the antigen test went and took her daughter to do her nails.

Schnorkles posted:we are really incredibly lucky that Omicron only has moderate immune escape. I mean that's true for the minority of otherwise reasonable people who are doing their best and uninformed about the necessities of proper PPE and/or unable to afford it. But like considering all fascists and most liberals are behaving as though COVID is over, it doesn't matter much. If you keep playing Russian Roulette, it doesn't matter if the gun in question is a mega-revolver with a billion chambers; eventually you will lose. Maybe I'm wrong, but I said it earlier in the thread; it seems to me that all that Omicron has actually done is just accelerate things. This path was already inevitable even if Delta stayed literally immutable and never got worse. Open Biden, an absence of meaningful state-level NPIs, and a lack of meaningful PPE by both HCWs and the general public would have made all this inevitable. Hospitals will collapse quicker due to volume, but like through burnout attrition and ever increasing rates of hospitalization as more and more people get severe reinfections due to damage from prior infections, it was inevitable. What would have taken months or maybe years is now taking weeks or maybe months. But all of this was, sadly, inevitable given the American strategy of 'gently caress around and find out.'
