Cthulu Carl posted:The music would probably give him a better living than the philosophy degree A Bachelor of Arts degree serves as one of two things; a springboard to higher academic achievement such as a PhD, or as proof that the holder holds a standardized set of academic qualifications that suits them for a broad category of what is known as "office work". Anyone with a BA has a demonstrated ability to: Navigate an arcane and sometimes inimical bureaucracy. Self-manage your time with competing priorities. Perform research and present your results. Summarize large quantities of information. Successfully complete individual and group projects. Plays well with others in a group situation. Don't think of a BA as "I'm a babby philosophy person", look at as a set of qualifications for doing useful, intellectual work in a group setting. I'm in IT at a major biotech, and our Quality group has BAs in Music Theory and History approving GxP documents that the FDA will look at. They started with a BA and a good attitude, and now medicines for severe diseases pass through their hands on the way to our patients. If someone wants to get into it about the really shamed degrees, like gender or ethnic studies, then my Marketing group would like to have a word with you. We're also developing a whole new role of Patient Advocate. And to top it off, we have a big push into inclusive medicine going on, so both of those degrees will be in demand. Outside of my company, those disciplines both spend a lot of time looking at demographic statistics. There's applications for that all over the place, the trick is finding an entry-level position.

AITA for kicking out bf because of his dog?quote:I know the title is going to get people riled up, but hear me out on this. I (31f) have been dating "Dude" (29m)for 8 months. It has been great. He has a dog that is 8, that he has had since she was a puppy. I have nothing against dogs, I'm just not a fan of owning them simply because 1. I live in an apartment and I feel they need a yard and 2. I don't want to do all the clean up that is involved with them.

AITA for enforcing the grocery store etiquettequote:At my local grocery store we have a system where you go around the store clockwise and up and down the rows in an order. It's not like it's a rule anyone needs to explain but it's a pretty clear etiquette and 99% of people are reasonable enough to follow the route. quote:The aisles are very narrow. If somebody goes the wrong way you basically have to reverse backwards. It ruins the experience for everyone else in the store I’ve been to some busted rear end C-Towns and IGAs and never have I had to deal with one way shopping. Hell, even under the depths of the pandemic with the arrows it wasn’t an issue.

To be fair, during the height of COVID, we did temporarily bring back plastic bags and theoretically have one-way aisles. I say theoretically because absolutely nobody paid attention to the arrows on the floor and the stores peeled them off the moment they were legally able to. Peeled off the standing squares that demarcate six feet at the checkouts, too.

However if this grocery store has aisles too narrow for people to pass in, or go in different directions, I feel like it’s more of an issue for say, a fire marshall, to take up, instead of Kaiser Kroger.

I imagine the scenario the Groceries General is describing, just a whole train of trolleys having to slowly back away out of the aisle, while the Oblivious Shopper just bowls across the scene all willy-nilly, everyone grumbling and being clearly inconvenienced, but only one man is brave enough to stand up for his fellows. This guy is clearly not trained in the subtle art of the Scandinavian stand-off; if two people are in each other's way, you just stand there and wait patiently for the other person to clear out or ask you to move. In the latter case you say "no problem" and yield, because they had to address a complete stranger, which still means they lost.

I've seen the scenario this guy is describing, very rarely, but it does happen in small, non-chain grocery stores in urban areas. The store is built out in a way that shopping carts can't pass each other, and for the most part if people have their carts pointed one way in an aisle other people follow along. Someone turning into an aisle going in the other direction usually requires backing out and slows down everyone. But yes, obviously a random customer yelling about it to the point of being kicked out of the store is the rear end in a top hat.

AITA for not giving my company of four years any notice?quote:Right so for context, I was hired at 17 under the guise of an apprenticeship but it was basically just an excuse to pay below minimum wage for a factory job as I didn’t go to college and worked a 45+hr week. Even after 3 years they refused to put me or my colleagues on any rate above minimum. I pushed for promotions to get a pay raise but was always brushed off with “I’d like more money too” or “there’s no room for promotion” from the bosses. We was monitored on cameras constantly -waiting for one of us to go on our phones so they had a problem to complain about- and even tried to get our team leader to time our toilet breaks with a stop watch once (he refused). My team and me behind closed doors was called unskilled workers and easily replaceable and that’s why they didn’t want to pay us above minimum.

If you're in a narrow grocery aisle and encounter another shopper coming the opposite way you calmly reach into their cart, select one item, and place it into your cart without ever breaking eye contact.

IMO if the aisles are too narrow for carts to pass, then the store is too small to have carts at all. You're in a handbasket situation there, and adding carts is pure madness.

There are some stores around Austin built in the late 90s that have a clear linear layout like an ikea, where traffic is definitely intended to flow in one direction from produce to pantry goods to meat/fish counters and then frozen foods. They have shortcuts to skip sections, etc. But they’re not this way because the aisles are small. You can go against the flow if you want to ?though you’ll need to do more work to avoid people) it just has a planned route through the store: If you’re in Manhattan going to a gristedes in a basement tho? The aisles there definitely get that small. EIDE Van Hagar fucked around with this message at 15:51 on Dec 30, 2021 |

The only stores I've been in that small would have like, two carts so that the olds had something to push their stuff around in, which made it very hard to have real conflict between cart shoppers.
