Then after that a huge page of skill lists, you got full characters builds popping up at you while you're still on the class selection page. Just way too much poo poo imo. What happened to just picking a few simple options to get you going at level 1 and then working in more abilities as you go? Why do I have look at this big mountain of stuff right out the gate? I felt like I was gonna need to go read a manual just to make a character so I decided to forget about it lol. I guess that's the value of free game giveaways, nothing lost! If your fighter is just standing around attacking dudes with melee then he built his character poorly, is bad at fighter, or the DM has a poo poo campaign. Ideally a fighter would be pulling off crazy feats of athleticism and slicing dudes up. Finish off a goblin with a free action, then throw a weapon at the chandelier to drop it on an ogre. Jump over a chasm so the hobgoblin can’t follow, then throw a javelin at his head while he’s trying to pull himself up after failing his athletics check to chase you. Chop a goblin in half in such a brutal way, all his friends run scared. Wrestle with a cop, and then interrogate him for advantage on an intimidation check. Bash a wizard with your shield to knock him prone and then stab him while he’s on the ground. Throw a claymore at a wizard casting a spell while shouting “magic missile”. Throw a flaming javelin, shouting “scorching ray”. Jump 20 feet and shout “misty step”. jokes fucked around with this message at 07:18 on Jan 3, 2022 |

So your defense of the class is that you have to convince the dm to let you do fun stuff? Because if a d&d fighter did all that stuff it's because he and the dm decided their actual skill kit was boring and jazzed it up with some skill rolls. Note that nothing is stopping the wizard from doing the same, they just have fun abilities so you don't have to.

Yeah, the game doesn't provide any meaningful support for any of that poo poo, and the Fighter deliberately has the worst skills in the game and sucks at everything non-combat. (and sucks at that too) The one time they tried to change that all the grognards threw tantrums and the developers said sorry and made sure that fighters could never do anything more than 'I use melee basic attack' ever again in the next edition, except for that one fringe build begrudgingly put in where they can maybe do a tactical thing if the DM allows it.

This is why Baldur's Gate worked so well. You controlled the entire party, so it was perfectly fine that the fighter was just set to auto attack the whole time. And if you had multiple spellcasters the realtime+pause system let you administer commands with as much nuance as you needed. e: But yeah this all falls apart if you try to play these games in multiplayer mode, with each person controlling a different character.

I recently started the Kingmaker too, because it was free. Rolled Wizard first, but not being able to be the talky character with great persuasion kinda killed it. Re-rolled as sucky wizard aka Sorcerer, which has Charisma as his main spellcasting stat and a killer persuasion. Now I'm just Greasing every nook and granny. Literally the most OP spell of the early levels. (How typical fight goes)

This has often been a problem in squad based FPS too. Games will have support classes but no one wants to play them because the offset is that they usually suck at the fun part of the game which is killing poo poo.

Alternately, you can be various versions of Battlefield where the Medic class is the most flagrantly overpowered one because they can self-heal and still get good guns.Ghost Leviathan posted:City of Heroes is the only good MMO because healing is the worst means of support while buffs are hilariously overpowered and shitloads of fun I take umbrage at this, but only because everyone subsequently shits on Empathy for being "the dumb Just Healing set" even though it's got more going on than that. Yeah that's the problem with support classes in general. Either they are underpowered to offset all of the support abilities, or devs buff them so people will actually use them, and a support who can also kill just as good as everything else is crazy op and players often just use them to help themselves.

I feel like the combat in any tabletop RPG has always been the least important part. I haven't played in ages, but the things that stick in my mind are not combat scenarios but fun interactions and discussions. But computers are stupid the combat takes the most important role in RPGs. I hate the realtime combat in Infinity Engine games. Turn based combat is a lot more fun. I enjoyed Pillars of Eternity 2 a lot more than 1 simply because they introduced turn based combat.
