It's probably been mentioned before but the Speed Racer live-action movie is awesome and has no business being as good as it is. It's even pretty damned faithful to the cartoon!

Probably the only live action anime to understand why people enjoy animated stuff, it's visually spectacular and technically ridiculous, doesn't treat any kids watching like they're dumb (Royalton speech) and that final race is so satisfying... It's also gloriously silly.

That first scene with Speed in class, the little flick book animation daydream and then him seeing Trixie and the flowers in the background turning to hearts was when I realised I was going to enjoy the film.

I've spent a lot of years thinking about watching it and chickening out. Maybe this weekend is the time. Now in 4K (if it exists)! Of all the Wachowski films... it sure cannot be worse than Matrix 4.

No idea. It just didn't appeal to me at all, as an unironic fan of the original.

It was!
It was silly and very colorful, and that's perfect. They modernized the car a little, but not too much, which I approve.

This, exactly.
Now I need to go watch it again. (Yes, of course I bought the BluRay.)

edit: speaking of movies, I rather enjoyed The King's Man. Spider Man: No Way Home was also good, if bittersweet.

Never watched the Speed Racer movie but have in recent years seen a few movie nerds do good "actually this movie is awesome" bits on it, so I should grab it.

Matrix 4 had ups and downs. I kinda liked the "just do the same thing again" vibe and all the stuff with Thomas Anderson sitting in meetings losing his mind as the team hosed up his creation was great, especially when you've heard what the Wachowskis have said over the years about Hollywood marketing and business analyst types, no surprise the big villain was "The Analyst". NPH was good. But the action was just meh. A few shots had me go "woah cool" at the time but now I can't remember gently caress all about it. The swarm stuff was cool but otherwise? Matrix 2 is decent enough, the whole freeway chase sequence is still stunning. But was that the one that also had the end of the world rave for some reason? And the defence of Zion scene with the mechs in I guess 3 was baller too. But the plot, eh.

I rather enjoyed the new Ghostbusters. It's not *amazing*, but goddamn that's a much better attempt at a reboot for a new generation. There's a bunch of cool little bits, clearly made by people who give a gently caress. The patina'd barnfind Ecto1 vibe is also loving cooooool. Note that I didn't hate the Ghostbusters with girls movie cos it had girls, I hated it cos it wasn't funny, wasted the potential of a talented cast but worse the tone was all wrong.

Don't Look Up was good but a bit on the nose right now at this point in time. Watch Wag the Dog or Death of Stalin.

Want to enjoy The King's Men too, the first was excellent but subsequent not as good. Fingers crossed.

Edit: uhhh sorry got confused, this isn't the chat thread. Have a breakdown of the Matrix freeway scene:

Redline is art, every frame was hand drawn and the sound track is longer than the movie as they were making music that matched the visuals as it was combing together.

Redline is such a love letter to traditional animation that imo it deserves a watch for that reason alone.

Anyway, I'm still in South Africa and I've been loving the old cars round here. The taxis are all vans, mostly new ones. I've seen a bunch of the new Hyundai Staria space vans which look really cool. But I have a soft spot for shitters so finding a few of these down a side street in District 6 was a treat.

These were in the Bo-Kaap area of town.

Including these pair of Mitsubishi Colts

There's a bunch more photos here: https://imgur.com/a/N7Z0lpZ

Including the cleanest old Land Cruiser ever, the cleanest old Mercedes and a bunch of other stuff I thought was cool/interesting. I'd post them all but I'm assembling this message on a phone which is a nightmare because the awful app keeps deleting my message each time I go back to the browser to get image links :v:

Both of those are good. I discovered Initial D before it was a thing (videocassette fansubs) and still have a soft spot for it. The early CGI is… actually pretty neat. There’s a remaster version of the first couple series with updated CGI, I think.

Redline had a very high bitrate blu-ray release in a lot of locales to the point that some low end blu-ray players would crash while playing. It’s a shame that there is no uhd releases of it.

Could be that Babylon 5 issue where the original CGI was only rendered to a specific target resolution and the original source files are gone, so they would either have to completely redo the work or run AI upscaling on it to make it not look like rear end at a higher resolution. Stuff shot on film can always be rescanned as cameras get better, but things that were done digitally or on tape need a lot more work to up-res.
