I saw it in 3D and it was actually really, really well done. Totally unnecessary but like the entire movie was in 3D and it was honestly impressive

Feels like the only good use of 3D is to give the illusion of depth and scale in landscapes, not for motion. That mediocre Everest movie was pretty good because of the 3D. I imagine DUNC could benefit from 3D (not sure if it was released in that format). Everything else has been poo poo as far as I can tell, including Avatar

that's exactly why the 3D in Spider the Man was so good, it was all stuff used to create a sense of depth and scale

There were plenty of good 3d films in the 2010s, such as Dredd, Prometheus and Tin-Tin. It’s just that the good ones were outnumbered by the lazy conversions.

Oh that does sound good. And also reminded me that there was that Herzog 3D movie about cave paintings or some poo poo which looked good but never played here

That was one of the few 3D films I actually wanted to see. I saw the 2D version of that and it was still good, but I was really curious to see what 3D would have brought to it. Herzog said something like only porn and Avatar really warrant 3D and for non-spectacle movies it's just a limitation, which sounds about right to me.

Exploration is ill-advised.
A shitload of projectionists also didn't adjust the lighting properly for 3D movies back in the last big trend leading to them being dark and murky.

I had an astigmatism for the majority of the 3D craze so in my experience the worst thing about the 3D trend was that it didn't work.

e: Also, maybe it's just me, but I think that everything that wasn't shot for 3D had big issues when it came to editing. From shot to shot your brain would have to constantly readjust and figure out what to focus on which was really distracting (which maintained after my astigmatism cleared up). Leading the eye more organically would've helped immerse me more.

We're probably going to see a big resurgence in 3D if VR headset movies become more of a thing, especially if VOD becomes the predominant movie watching experience. You don't need anything new, they can just stream you the 3d version of the movie (for twice the cost).

Hugo was a really good use of 3D. There are scenes where they're showing the filming of some of George Méliès' films and the added depth made me realize how he staged a lot of his films.

Drive Angry 3D got a lot of buzz on CD but was pretty bad. It did have one good scene where Nic Cage's character is driving and being tormented by the visions he saw in Hell, which were displayed on the windshield of the car. The 3D effect was really cool in that scene but the movie wasn't worth watching.

CG animated movies work really well in 3D obvi (because all they have to do is render a second virtual camera angle) but they're hardly ever released on a 3D home format. I'd probably use an all-3D streaming service if there were such a thing.

As far as post-production conversions go, they're usually garbage, but I watched the 3D version of Jurassic Park and holy poo poo, it was like seeing the movie for the first time.

The only film I've ever seen in 3D in the theater was the first Lego Movie and I was blown the gently caress away. Particularly when the pieces were being used for effects like fire, smoke, and water.

We're all going to experience changes in our life but only the best of us will qualify for front row seats.

I saw the fifth Resident Evil movie in the theater and it was extremely 3D, starting with the title credits in the intro. It was even better several years later when I watched it on TV, because all those moments fell flat in 2D. Literally sometimes!

Edit: Actually, it was the fourth one that had the intro, but the fifth one had a lot of obvious moments for 3D. It's so hard to tell those movies apart at times. It doesn't help that the fifth movie features a recreation of the fourth movie's intro. Also, did I see both of them at the theater in 3D? lmao
