Thankfully I never got into Piers Anthony, but I was way, way too into Robert Heinlein. Not sure which is worse.

Piers Anthony has a horror novel called Firefly. It's not so much about a giant killer firefly as it a novel length defense of pedophilia. It's super gross. And there are no giant killer fireflies. I think it was just some alien goo.

It opens with “bombing innocent civilians is OK if it forces their government to join the war on your side”, somehow I made it past that but I just couldn’t get past the chapter where Rico gets really horny over public executions.

I loved Heinlein, especially Moon is a Hrash Mistress, and I think I would be a worse leftist now if I hadn't gone through a libertarian phase from reading too much Heinlein at a younger age

It's really, really awful, and I ate it up at 10 as well. Not a kid's fault at all for not seeing that it was inappropriate.

When you're only a teenager yourself, seeing your own weird nascent sexuality represented in fantastical fiction can be pretty gratifying. There's a place for that sort of thing, but not from this loving guy and his fixations on teen-retiree relationships

The thing you young folks don't realize is that Gor was the first easily-findable mainstream BDSM porn. Along those lines, Fifty Shades is pretty terrible, but it was the first mass-market BDSM porn aimed at women that they could read electronically. That was a big selling point: you could read your copy without people mocking you (or getting mad at you) for your reading tastes. Similarly, Gor just looked like Edgar Rice Burroughs knockoffs (which the first one pretty much was), so it was in mainstream bookstores. File it with Sears underwear catalogues as things that nobody has to limit themselves to nowadays.

It attempted to cover its small form with its small arms and small needles. "I am plant," it said wonderingly. "I am of Earth, but for the first time, I feel myself truly plantlike. On Earth, I was able to control my watering. I often scorned those who would water me. But they were weak, and did not see my scorn for what it was, the weak attempt of a small plant to protect itself. Not one of the weak Earth waterers would dare to water a plant if it did not wish it. But on Gor," it shuddered, "on Gor it is different. Here, those who wish to water will water their plants as they wish. But strangely, I feel myself most plantlike when I am at the mercy of a strong Gorean master, who may water me as he pleases."

Content warning: pedo poo pooChloe Jessica posted:Bio of a Space Tyrant, also by Anthony, was essentially an astropolitical thriller, projecting the Cold War into space and telling the story of a Hispanic immigrant to Jupiter who becomes supreme ruler of the solar system or something Also the developmentally disabled youth initiated the relationship through VR so he didn't know she was underage until they had been doing it in VR for a while so really it was all her fault. Honestly I think the worst relationship in those books might have been a background one. His first girlfriend. They are both teens when they meet on the 'boat'. Her backstory is that her impoverished family rented her out to a rich pedophile when she was 5. She cried the first time but promised not to cry after that. She called him uncle. She got to have nice things and a good online education, plus the pedo sent her family money every month. It was presented as a very happy and mutually beneficial relationship. A relationship that ended abruptly when she was 11 and started to go through puberty, ruining his attraction for her. He said he'd already kept her a couple years past his age preference, because he cared for her so much, but now it just wouldn't work. This is presented as tragic for both of them. He will never be able to settle down because the girls keep getting too old for him, and she has to go back to her poor family and find work because they are poorer now without his payments. Really laying it on to make the pedo a tragic figure rather than a monstrous one.
