I'm amazed the license fee lasted this long after the arrival of Sky, where you had to pay a setup fee and monthly subscription for a separate infrastructure, yet still had to pay the BBC's ransom money to legally watch anything on it. Not that I trust the Tories to be doing this for any good reason, but the political wing of the BBC has been rancid, toxic trash for years now, so whatever would constitute a good replacement wouldn't entirely resemble it anyway.

My impression was that TV is largely only watched by olds now anyway (“old” meaning anybody mid-30s or older) — are kids these days really still sitting down to watch shows instead of just doing YouTube / Netflix and torrents?

People conflate BBC news with being The BBC. News is a small part of the BBC, and the wider BBC does some fantastic programming and losing that will make us all poorer.

I never watched tv much in the previous decade so i lost very little as my time was split between work & gaming mostly. No BBC, no live shows on any medium (Twitch & YT are debatable so i just watch them after the stream if wanted). Get plenty of letters from the TV Licence people and them knocking on the door as well (they are door to door salesmen who get paid on commission), for me i don't interact with them, say nothing and politely ignore them until they are gone.

Unless something makes its way to Netflix, I don't watch anything from the BBC. It's also worth mentioning that it's not only just the news department that produces propaganda, but their documentary teams too. Stacey Dooley's documentary about the dangers of cannabis comes to mind as a fine example, and EastEnders is full of inserted storylines to condition the public etc. Anything worth saving from the BBC will make its way onto other platforms, and the rest can be flushed down the sewers as far as I'm concerned.

Struggling to think of who would really care in 10y time. Radio especially. Outside of communal spaces like factories, shops etc I don't know anyone who would listen to the radio. Hard to imagine who is actually tuning in to radio 1 on a Saturday night (esp with drinking culture in decline). The whole model is sclerotic. It's a shame as, as a large broadcasting corp ostensibly setup in the public interest, they could have lead the way in digital adaptation. Could have made boatloads launching a BBC Netflix of "all the poo poo we can find in our archives" and selling it internationally.

That would be a reasonable argument if the BBC was actually free, didn't charge a monthly fee to access other people's content even when hosted on completely different infrastructure, and didn't send their goon squad to harass people in their homes if they dare suggest that they don't want to pay for content they aren't watching.

The BBC can get hosed, especially with the new questionnaire when you fill out your "no license needed" paperwork, that keeps reversing the sense of the questions and suggests Twitch and YouTube are reasons for requiring a license.

Hell the reason they kept Clarkson so long was that he pretty much paid the budget for BBC 4 for years. The BBC has a mandate to produce content that people want to watch and under that very wide umbrella they can then make things like 0.1% of the population would enjoy because of it. One thing that really annoys me when people say to just make it a subscription service like Netflix etc, because have you looked at what Netflix makes? I don't want even more prestige tv and I certainly want content that wont get cancelled if it doesn't top the most watched charts for 3 weeks after launch.

Oh yeah the raft of things coming out is all Operation Save Big Dog, it's just unfortunate that they matter independantly of that as well. Ending the licence fee is set for after the next election so that's something they can 'worry' about come manifesto time but more military ships patrolling the channel doing pushbacks or whatever else is planned is very bad now.

The BBC has been world-leading in TV tech right up to the current era, where they were able (along with NHK) to get the HLG curve HDR standard adopted as a free alternative to the Dolby-sponsored PQ. It's always done a lot of what you'd want a socialised entertainment industry to. It's been dragged down by successive governments driving it to do less good stuff, less 'unfair' competition with commercial broadcasters and more adherence to their standards of success.

I think the only things I watch are weird media analysis videos, the odd politics thing, and lets plays on youtube, all of which are significantly more interesting and thoughtful than anything I have ever seen on a TV so I can't see why I would go back. I don't actually want to watch tv but I am quite happy to watch other people explain that they watched tv and how that made them feel about stuff.
