Never known much about Billie, I just heard she's legend. I figured this would be a decent intro to her: BTW, I hate this cover art. petit choux fucked around with this message at 16:54 on Jan 21, 2022 |

Probably is a good intro to Billie Holiday? There's a remix CD simply called Billie Holiday: Remixed and Reimagined which is shamefully how I first heard her. I've since scrounged up a normal greatest hits album from the thrift store though.

The Essential Billie Holiday: Carnegie Hall Concert Recorded Live is kind of an interesting record because it was a concert in support of her autobiography and between songs, someone reads passages from it. It was a bit jarring hearing a pretty blunt and tragic life story being read to what I've always imagined was a largely white, upper class audience.

My elementary school years were closer to my parents' than the modern day so we probably had arithmetic records. I for sure remember records or tapes for learning multiiplication. There was also an LP with a participation song called "What Did You Eat This Morning?"

I'm living in a miserably small apartment and don't do much with my records RN but I've got one somewhere from when those socialist fascist terrorists from our government tried to shove their big throbbing metric system down our throats too. But we showed them.

You could also do a 4x4 Kalax and it should fit a turntable on top.

If you live near an Ikea, you likely have a few Kallax that came with the apartment and so does everyone you know. If you do not live near an Ikea, you will never see one in the wild and will look on in despair as those who have them in great abundance speak of them with cruel casualness. Hopefully you're in the former group

What receivers/amps do you guys use? When my dad died I got his Kenwood KR-A5020 receiver which served him fine and it's serving me fine. 60W per channel, from the early nineties. I think he paid a hundred bucks for it and it's not work any more today. It sounds alright to me. But I see people with their high end vintage Pioneers and Kenwood (swoon) and Marantz receivers and they look amazing and apparently (I wouldn't know) sound amazing. What am I missing? Do they actually sound different? Are they built better? I think they definitely look better but the prices are just insane on some of them. I've found myself joining some vintage hifi facebook groups and some of the stuff they post is pure pornography and I'm getting afraid that I'm going to end up dropping a grand on something and not really knowing what I'm going to be getting out of it.

If you're just looking for a nice-looking receiver, there's lots of late-70s equipment out there that doesn't cost $1000 and looks great. Ove the years I've owned a Yamaha CR-640, Sansui G-4500, and JVC R-S33, which all look great IMO and are a pleasure to use. And they probably all can be had between $100-$300.

The JVC isn’t as high demand so might be a little less expensive than the other two, but you will easily pay $300+ for the Yamaha and more for the sansui. That’s $500+ retail. I'll second the Yamaha RN303 as I got a new one a couple of years ago when the Heathkit my Dad built finally died and we couldn't fix it without a total rebuild. The Yamaha is great, did a good job of showing off how lousy my speakers were and that the record player itself was developing problems! And I'm pretty sure wood 12 x 12 cube shelves with feet have been a furniture item since the 1960s, you don't necessarily have to go to IKEA to find one. I'm basing this solely off of my Mom's memory of her parents keeping their records in one though.

But regardless, even if he's getting someone professionally serviced and recapped, my point was that he doesn't need to spend $1,000+ to get a nice vintage receiver.

What are some good composers to keep an eye out for? I want to start getting into some classical music but have no idea where to start

Start with the big 3 and branch out from there, imo. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven. They all cover different eras starting with Baroque (Bach), Classical (Mozart), & Romantic (Beethoven) and each is generally considered the preeminent composer of their respective eras. You'll get a better idea of what you gravitate toward. Maybe you like Bach and will dig Gregorian chant? Re: record storage https://www.toneoptic.com/

A few years ago, I bought a bunch of these: Made by Foremost, but they seem to have been discontinued. I have a mix of black and white ones. They cost between $16-18 depending on where I got them (mostly Amazon). They're laminate over a wood-ish core held together with screws and dowels. They can be stacked together with smaller dowels. The closest non-IKEA thing I've seen recently is made by Way Basics: quote:zBoard is a material made up of 99 percent post-consumer recycled paper (the remaining 1 percent is paper as well), completely recyclable and less than half the weight (with the same strength) of particle board. These are a bit pricier at $35 each. They're held together with dowels and double-sided tape.

I had a date planned with this dude to my favorite record store and he ghosted me. I realized later it was because he was trying to get me to sell him my copy of the Residents WB Album. When he fully realized I wasn't going to sell it to him he just strung me along until the last minute. So that's definitely one of the more supremely lovely things anyone's done to me but at least I can bask in the satisfaction that I have way cooler poo poo than he does and he probably won't be able to get his hands on any of it because it's all way more expensive than when I bought it. He probably figured he was going to sweet talk me into selling it to him for cheaper than internet price. So yeah, gently caress that guy (but don't gently caress that guy). On a lighter note I just got a sealed original copy of Hairway To Steven by the Butthole Surfers. I paid a little more than I normall would have for a used Butthole Surfers LP but I liked having the assurance that it wasn't going to be a G+ graded as a VG+.
