Probably due to the 3D. Unless you were James Cameron a lot of those shot in 3D films looked mega cheap and smeary as poo poo.

Maybe it's marketing too? I remember the movie suddenly being all over a random episode of a German soap opera. Like, there were posters everywhere and characters all but turned to the camera to say "Hey I won tickets to Pirates of the Carribean 4: Salazar's revenge" or some poo poo, they probably didn't do that for free.

Marketing isn't factored in a movie's production budget. A rule of thumb for marketing budgets is that's usually equal to the movie's stated production budget, which is why any movie that doesn't make at least twice its budget is considered a "flop".

The "above-the-line" vs "below-the-line" costs feel like the key thing IMHO. Wonder if that 1/1 ratio still holds up or has skewed towards the former.

I figured they just spend more money on poo poo past the point of diminishing returns that they don't actually know what to do with.

"We'll give you about $8 million under the contract, and we'll guarantee the lion's share by paying you out as early in the process as possible." They also just sometimes spend hundreds of millions of dollars on making poo poo that just looks bad. Reshoots and development changes can do it too, like making assets and then trashing them because someone had a bad day and wanted to do something different, or the script kept getting changed and they don't have any need for it anymore.

The Village wasn't a bomb by any means, but it was the beginning of him losing a bit of that shine and then of course we all know what happened after that. But when he was making his deal for The Village he was doing it with the clout of a guy who was 3 for 3 in terms of making mid-budget films that brought in hundreds of millions of dollars.

Yeah, given how literally every major production has endless reshoots nowadays and is all slathered in CGI, you can probably spend loads just going through countless iterations based on the latest whim of the producer or the focus group. Can only imagine the back and forth with the director, apparently that design was already a compromise. Kinda funny how a lot of Hollywood has trouble with having explicitly cartoony designs next to real people and think they need to look 'realistic', even if the result is gross and appeals to nobody. And the redesign was just going straight back to basics that had worked for 30 years for a reason. Actually also comes to mind that Detective Pikachu oddly enough threaded that needle- the designs got some bad reactions in early stills but worked fine in motion. Also pretty funny that they got that fan artist who drew creepy awesome 'realistic' detailed designs on board for concept art. You can tell the difference when they actually have a solid idea in mind for translating the game designs for iconic critters to appear alongside live-action humans and actually try to split the difference.

Working on Detective Pikachu and Sonic back-to-back was definitely an interesting experience. I think the difference was that all the Pokemon designs had to be approved by The Pokemon Company, and we had like a year of just building Pokemon assets before actual shot-work began. The volume of different creatures also probably helped, since there wasn't time to fiddle with any particular design, and just making them look like they do in the game was the easiest path to approval. Since Sonic was the only character in his movie, there was more room for back-and-forth, which led to a lot of iterations and compromises. Jeff Fowler wanted Sonic to look like a real animal (there was even some cute concept art of Sonic just being an actual upright hedgehog), whereas Sega was concerned about specific elements of his design being included. Like, Sega was insistent that Sonic's mono-eye be represented in the character, which was eventually bargained down to a strip of white fur above his nose that "suggests" it. Bringing Tyson Hesse on to lead the redesign was absolutely the right choice - He came out of the gate with notes and diagrams of how Sonic's skull should work, what shape his eyeballs should be, and how his limbs should thicken as they get towards his hands and feet to ease into his more cartoonish proportions.

I watched a video review of it and the footage from the movie is just breathtakingly incompetent. Scenes go on too long, bizarre editing and background music that drowns out the dialogue. Also for some reason the guy made the movie in English despite the fact that most of the actors in it (including himself) are German so everyone has a very thick accent.
