I think you blow up the mines without the minesweeper just by having them be triggered. Like, if you can lure some warboys to run over them or drop a brick on your gas pedal and let a car roll over one, it blows up and counts as it being disarmed. But that's more tedious and annoying than going back to a stronghold, grabbing the dog buggy, and doing the minigame. easily worst part of the game, though easily ignored

Yeah I started recently and the starting class I picked (Collector--comes with the Beast Cleaver from Bloodborne) starts with 24 strength. Levels are cheap enough and there are enough avenues of exploration open at the start that I was level 70 before I beat Vordt. Iudex Gundyr is a "proper" boss now that has to be unlocked (not hard, but still) and he guards a new boss with voice lines that I can not step to just yet because he's so damaging and aggressive.

I liked god of war a lot but the ending was just so… anticlimactic. I did not expect that the fight with Baldur was more or less the final boss of the game. It had some good story beats but it certainly wasn’t anything approaching challenging. The optional boss, Sigund seemed much more final boss-y. The game just sorta ended with a sequel hook that left 3 realms totally unexplored. Now I’m sitting here trying to decide whether I want to go back and look for the rest of the ravens or just quit.

You don't get anything for killing them all besides an achievement so I wouldn't bother unless you're going for 100% completion. I also left kind of surprised that Baldur was the final boss, though to be fair he's probably the best boss in the main campaign. I was expecting Jotunheim to be an actual gameplay zone with the real final boss instead of an extended cutscene but nope, that's the end for now. Even the most boring Valkyrie is still a better boss fight than any in the main story so I'm glad they exist to give a real test of how well you've mastered the combat. Sigrun starting the fight by coming through the portal and immediately smashing your head into the ground was easily one of the highlights of the game.

I really feel like they could have spaced out rewards better in this game. You get major weapon upgrades for doing nothing at all while artifact/raven hunting and most of the sidequests are pointless unless you need money I guess? Ravens don't even give you that. Some of the plot was pretty pointless too. That whole excursion into the belly of the world serpent was just a pointless waste of time. They could have put Mimir's eye anywhere. You don't even have to fight anything for it. Just go into its belly, pick up the item and leave. I just found a neat little easter egg stinger while hunting for ravens. If you go back home after the credits roll and rest in your bed, it flashes forward to the future during a thunderstorm and a cloaked figure is standing outside. Kratos screams "who are you" and Thor throws his cloak to one side revealing Mjolnir. Then it flashes back to the present where annoying Loki child says he had a strange dream... Edit: And yeah, what you said about the realms was super disappointing. I suppose they can only cram so much into one game but it's a pretty major letdown when the game shows you the realm map and you really only get to fully explore Alfheim, Midgard and the two "bonus" grind realms (Nifleheim and lava world). Double Edit: Sigund isn't all that bad if you learn her moves/tells and just rely on runic counterattacks to kill her and never ever go on the offense unless she turtles Frank Frank has a new favorite as of 01:41 on Jan 29, 2022 |

I've never really felt compelled to do every quest (actually I don't think I've ever completed a main questline in an Elder Scrolls game) but I still get annoyed by a cluttered quest log. Once I get done loving around in the woods for hours on end hoovering up Nirnroots or whatever, I usually remember "Oh, yeah, I picked out some interesting sounding quest early somewhere around here. Lemme check what it was." And then I have to scroll through a bunch of bullshit listings telling me someone heard there was a ruin somewhere once before I remember what I wanted to go do.

I get that problem definitely, but I'd classify it more as a problem of a bad journal than specifically quests being added to it automatically. I wish more games would build things like inventories and journals as if they were bonafide tools for the player. Approach the creation of them as if they were making a utility for the player, like it was a third party solution to solve a real world problem. Think about the actions a player might want to take and build it around that. As it stands now they are so very often stripped down in terms of utility even when they aren't just straight up clunky bullshit. I've been playing a bunch of survival games recently and I've legit quit a couple just because of inventory. Even Terraria which I eventually stuck with for a while I had some false starts because I couldn't be hosed dealing with the inventory system. In the case of Skyrim let me sort entries, let me flag entries for folders, let me make notes on entries, etc. Actually that's another point. Every RPG and a lot of complex sim/builder/survival/whatever games should give me an ingame notepad of some kind. So often I find myself just wanting to jot something down and I'd love it if I could do it inside the game. Phigs has a new favorite as of 09:02 on Jan 29, 2022 |

A post in the other thread reminded me about gimmick quests with celebrities, as Far Cry 6 apparently has one with Danny Trejo. It might be a Ubisoft thing because Watch Dogs Legion had one too. Grime artist Stormzy gives you a mission to defend an underground gig he's performing and its probably the cringiest thing I've ever seen. Piloting drones to shoot down enemy drones while the music video plays in the background and it's all 'gently caress the man', and it just seems wholly embarrassing for all involved. I quite like Stormzy so I can't imagine how awful it would be for someone who doesn't like him

I can't really think of any game that is in first person that I ever appreciate transitioning to third. I guess I get it when driving vehicles (though truly I prefer driving in first-person) because it helps with understanding the space around you but like, why do I need to be in third person when mounting a stationary gun? I don't gain anything by being able to also see the back of my head. Any shooter that has a third-person perspective inevitably just distracts me with character movement. Some "weighty" feeling games, like say Dark Souls does a better job of this, but if a character moves fast like in a shooter, their legs are always just doing their own weird thing independent of the torso, trying to navigate the terrain around it and it looks terrible. Every single time it looks terrible. credburn has a new favorite as of 20:37 on Jan 29, 2022 |

The last two Deus Exes, especially, felt like they really couldn't decide on whether they wanted to do first or third person. In Far Cry 6, there's a very early scene where you meet the main villain, like you do in all the other ones. The main difference is that in the other games, Michael Mando was in your camera talking to you, the player, whereas you see the scene in 6 in third person, like a conventional cutscene. It just doesn't work and the scene falls flat. Yes, Antón Castillo is a threatening villain, but you're always reminded that you're playing a character and you observe the story at arm's length. I don't mind first-person games that show off your character in menus and such (like Cyberpunk 2077), but if you're gonna do first-person, don't half-rear end it.

I agree, vehicles are basically the only time I want it to switch to third-person. I actually prefer third-person for action games in general, but I feel like if you're going first-person you should lean into its particular strengths.

Again, Cyberpunk 2077 understands this perfectly. Having a character perform cybernetic surgery on your V while you're watching (no cutscene, no nothing) in the first hour of gameplay is pretty great. It never leaves V's perspective (other than driving), and the story feels so much more personal.

The only examples I can think of offhand that are even remotely close are 1) dungeon crawlers and early immersive sims letting you annotate maps and 2) Deus Ex had a notepad you could type stuff up in. While I 100% agree with the notion of making UIs more intuitive and helpful, I think an obvious problem is that most of those solutions are clunky at best on consoles/using a controller. Of course, it just follows logically then that you should build two separate UIs that accomplish the same goals. Or if you're loving terrible you can make all players equally suffer through one of those garbage Destiny-style cursor-based inventory systems that make interacting with things the biggest chore imaginable.
