The motivation is "work or you can sit in your cell doing nothing with no money to buy basic items from the overpriced commissary". The prison system handles housing and food, and can deduct up to 80% of their wages to pay for it. It's also legal to pay them much less than minimum wage, and even in the federally-supervised programs that require "market rates" for work you can apparently reclassify all the labor as "training programs" and magically that rule doesn't apply anymore.

Yea my stepbrother is a prison guard and he seemed genuinely confused when I compared prison labor to slavery, because he's an american with no concept of the relationship between labor and capital, and the prisoners are totally willing to work for peanuts.

Also a hell of a lot of Americans have never actually read the text of the 13th amendment and don't realize it has that fun little "except for convicts :imunfunny:" bit. You learn it's the Free The Slaves one, that's all you gotta know about it to pass highschool history.

Hence this. Slavery was abolished by the 13th amendment, it can't be slavery that's illegal!!

Guys I just had an amazing idea -- if we can still enslave people convicted of crimes, and we criminalize harmless but universal behaviors and then disproportionately enforce those laws against marginalized populations, then we can have slaves again!!

It would be super easy to teach to kids, too, just have them do a writing exercise where they write sentences with the word "except" in them.

I never eat cookies, except after dinner. See kids, that means you still loving eat cookies all the time. And that's what we do to human beings!

I loving hate the salary expectation question. It's always a trap, either you go to high and potentially price yourself out of the job or you go low and undervalue yourself.

There's videos around saying "just turn the question back on them by asking their salary range for the position! Bing bong, easy"

I attempted this when I got my last job and the HR lady just absolutely refused to give a figure until I stated my expectation.

Luckily my mate got me in for the job interview(the only real way to get anywhere in life) and I knew what he was getting paid so stated that figure and then refused to budge when they tried to low ball me.

this is peak goon but I didn’t know about the 13th amendment until the end of Lincoln, when tommy lee jones is reading out the amendment in bed as the music swells in a crescendo of west wing schlock. I laughed for days when he says, “except…” and had to look it up because I didn’t believe it.

It has happened to me so often that I've pitched a proposal for a project and the people hiring me are like "Okay, we accept your proposal but please send us a new invoice where you double the artist fee because you're lowballing yourself", cause I suck at estimating how much my labour is worth but I live in a reasonable country with payment standards and work in a friendly industry. I bet I would've starved ot death by this age if I'd been born in the US.

An NFT of an entirely fictional thing with no physical representation. That's brilliant, you can't even right click and save!

Also, if any actual dead guy gets minted, it's a crime to steal the body, so your investment is sound, if decaying.
