just read stuff/watch stuff that interests you and if something you dont like is in it, stop reading/watching it. idk. its not one or two guys but you can read manga for hundreds of years and not run into that stuff also. because theres a ton of manga.
mangadex has put up ratings again and anything in the 8-9 range are probably the safest recommendations but the 6-7 range has potentially the most interesting stuff if you’re looking for something that’s non-standard or not perfectly pleasant all the time

among the lesbian anime rated 6 on mal i have almost never been disappointed by any of them while all of the shows rated 7 have left me disappointed... perhaps...?

the hard part of that is how to find out that information in the first place. this thread and the season thread are basically all the exposition i have to the weebsphere outside of directly consuming content
i decide what anime to watch by going on anichart and sorting by score when a season starts :v:

e: in any case this is a discussion i'm very passionate about but woefully underprepared for. i really don't know what the right thing to do when it comes to authors being creep weirdos is because it's clearly not just one or two guys who are a tiny minority

well you can like, ask "hey i was thinking of watching this anime but it's not going to be really creepy or anything?" here and people will tell you if you're worried. this is just an annoying/bad part of liking anime, there's a ton of stuff that's popular that the broader fandom will be pretty uncritical about re: creepiness so going in totally blind to things can easily catch you off guard.

like idk how many times i've seen people freak out "i was watching maiddragon/made in abyss/etc. and wtf it's so creepy suddenly", it's a bit of a problem

They aren't as upfront about it like Illya or revenge porn isekai, so people go in with other expectations and then post about it, of course.

im pretty sure dragon maid fans have some sort of sleeper gene that makes them lose all their memory whenever lucoa and the kid she hangs out with are onscreen, thats my only explanation for how people talked about s1 as like 'im glad this didnt get to all the creepy stuff in the manga'

I finished FlipFlappers. I liked it! Especially the art, which had a vibrant, energetic feeling that you don't see often. I think it probably would have been better as like, an 8 or 9 episode series. The early episodes doing the setup were fine, and the last 5 or 6 episodes where all the plot happened were fine, but in the middle it felt like it just spun its wheels for a while. Some amount of filler between act 1 and act 3 is fine, but it felt like a bit too much, for me.

I also sort of had no idea what was going on, from like, a fantasy narrative perspective. From the human, emotional perspective, everything was crystal clear. I don't know if that contrast was intentional, or if the muddled narrative was a mistake, or if it wasn't muddled at all and I'm just an inattentive viewer. But, to me, it sort of felt like "you already know magical girl shows. I don't need to explain this stuff. Just fill in the blanks for yourself." And the way the viewer didn't really understand what was going on felt like a mirror to how the adults never bothered to explain anything to the main characters. It was a pretty intriguing feeling all around

Also trying to not think too deeply about the relationship between Papika and Cocona because it's cute but also kind of hosed if you think about it too hard. so I just won't, so that it remains cute.
