There is a archery place about 10 mins from my house that I drive past regularly. It's just some equipment in some guys back garden really. They fly all sorts of flags (eng/sco/wal/cananda/us etc). Today when I went by they had two massive "don't tread on me" snake flags. Not was I was expecting to see on a monday morning.

I went to Ushuaia as part of my honeymoon to Argentina and there are a lot of posters around about the Malvinas. Also in BA a memorial about the crimes of the British. Was quite interesting to see.

Just saw an article that claimed that facebook and paypal's losses on the stonk market are great actually because that value will be picked up by smaller companies, leading to overall gains. Almost as though they were redistributing it. The wealth. Also pointing out that a lot of the 'losses' are merely a return to pre-pandemic 'not making all of the money all of the time' levels.

I assume the rationale is that the stock market must have X amount of money in it and if it cannot be embodied in the stock of those companies it will end up in the stock of other companies? I am not sure why the premise of that argument must be true however.

I would have assumed that it's more that the market still exists but multiple smaller competitors are always better because competition is inherently good. As to why markets keep resulting in monopolies, as we all know, there are two acceptable political ideologies: capitalists who think that we just need a few more regulatory tweaks, and capitalists who think we need to stop interfering. I just came up with this taxonomy writing this post & honestly I think it summarises the main parties in most western liberal democracies pretty well

My surface level understanding from barely keeping up with TF is that the money coming into the stock market is generally from investors. If facebook's stock goes down, the investors who are looking at a predicted return of x% will drop out, and instead invest it in other companies who's stock is rising at >x%. Whether that works in practice or not is less funny than the stock market discovering economic socialism.
