Stalin is actually a really easy read. Everyone else is a different breed of egghead but Stalin gets right down to the nuts and bolts of it cuz he's the type of guy more concerned with getting poo poo done than slap fighting with his posting enemies.

He's a very dense writer but you can make it past that the stuff you gain is so valuable. It took me a while to get through The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte but it's probably one of the best takedowns of the concept of a state that i've ever read.

liberal revisionists love calling the March to the Sea a form of "Total War" even though they mostly just lived off the land and did a lot of property damage. Which wasn't nearly as bad as the kind of total war waged in Europe, which involved a lot of mass rape & murder. The only people Sherman did wage total war on were the natives.

It is kind of a dark irony that the only American war which didn't immediately turn into never-ending atrocity was also pretty much the only one we were on the right side of

This is true. Foundations of Leninism and Economic Problems of the USSR were fun reads.

Imo brumaire isn't hard to read per se but it's largely a blow by blow of the intricacies of contemporary French politics. The points he's making still make sense today but the specifics are mystifying, even if you know a bit about the time period

His shorter stuff is okay. I'd save Capital for when you're really ready to dig in, and follow along with Dave Harvey's lecture series or companion book.

Engels and Lenin are much more approachable for sure.

disagree, Capital is a genuinely engaging and entertaining book, far more so than most western philosophy. the most challenging part is the opening chapters, and it's also a book that makes substantially more sense on the second read because so much is jammed into the opening chapters.

just couple it with a outside source, like Harvey's lectures/companion book [e:f,b]

that’s my past 15 years. I went from standard dnd style lib in the military and applying (and failing) to get into state, to having it dawn on me in stages that literally everything the good liberal framework predicted would happen in the world did not ever come true. what broke me completely was all the mainline dems suddenly becoming very politically competent when it came to ending any possibility of Medicare for all, mainline liberal press rallying around the far right Bolivia coup, and realizing all those positive incremental progress “everything is getting better in the developing world under capitalism“ metrics only worked if you included china.

I don’t have super coherent politics right now but the contradictions of progressive liberalism basically shattered my mind. it took a while though

Same, although i've had my political experience bolstered by theory too.

I applied to the FS in 2013, although I was unemployed at that time and would have taken any job, it's still funny to look back then and realize it felt like a different person just from how drastically my political mindset and beliefs have changed. I really thought I did was to become a State department cop and worse, thought it was working with "the good guys."

I guess I did have some growing up to do even in my mid 20s. It's fortunate my application went nowhere and I moved on.

edit: lol found an old post of mine praising :abuela: as SECSTATE and saying she'd be an excellent president. Well I still at least think she'd be a good candidate, just for completely different reasons now! :yum:

vol 1 is the one most worth reading through yourself and the most ineffectively summarized, so I suggest it to anyone on the left, regardless of background. vol 2 and 3 are worthwhile but more boring and I don't think they are nearly as damaged by summary

Weird question - nearly all of the time the Ukrainian Army is shown by US media, it’s guys in their new digital camo, with M4s/416s and either FAST or other HSLD helmets.

When shown by regular journalists, or especially Ukrainians’ own photos, they have the Ak-74s, soviet era uniforms and helmets you’d expect. Is the US media only photographing one unit?

Maybe it's more a difference between the Ukranian standing army, the civilian reserves/militias, and the foreign volunteers.

There's just too much footage out there, that I assume this kind of poo poo would be noticeable?

I think they've been sending all the good stuff to the front to show off for media. All the guys who are tac'd up and in full body armor are being interviewed from the trenches and bunkers. The AK-74s are for the back line and reservists.

It gets even weirder with the fascist paramilitaries because they're sourcing weapons from all over the drat place, including Israel.

It's where the fighting with Donbas is going on, and they seem to be carrying foreign weapons.

I just assumed the good stuff is more likely to get sent to where the fighting is actually taking place.
